I'm going to a lodge meeting in a couple of weeks to see what it's all about. Is it a good way to network in my community?

Checked out a couple of books from the campus library after class tonight, I'm reading up on the Old Charges and the differences between operative and speculative masonry. It seems to be "a peculiar systems of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols" to use their own words.

Uh, yes, that's accurate.

The difference between operative and speculative masonry is that one builds walls and one doesn't, though they may share the same clubhouse. At some point in time (1400s-1500s) European noblemen were allowed to join Masonry, though why they'd want to join a labor guild is not elaborated upon. Presumably cosmic secrets were in a lot smaller supply back then...

We refer to (small "g") god as the "Great Architect", not Lucifer. ("Small g" because Masonry requires you to have a belief in god as you understand him/her/it/them, not necessarily in the Christian sense.

The intro to Masonry was the Demolays. My lodge was nothing but faggots in high school. I quit. My dad was a 33rd degree mason...sadly, he felt it did not conflict with Christianity. He was wrong.

My church, the LCMS does not believe in secret societies, nor does the Bible.

Are you familiar at all with this?

"Des Griffin quotes Lady Queensborough's book, "Occult Theocrasy," that records Albert Pike's own words: "Yes, Lucifer is God, and unfortunately Adonay (Jehovah) is also God. For the eternal Law is that there is no light without shade, no beauty without ugliness, no white without black. For the Absolute can only exist as two Gods: darkness being necessary to light to serve as its foil as the pedestal is necessary to the statue and the brake to the locomotive. The doctrine of Satanism is a heresy; and the true and pure philosophic Religion 'is the belief in Lucifer,' the equal of Adonay; but Lucifer, God of Light and God of Good, is struggling for humanity against Adonay, the God of Darkness and Evil." (La Femme et L' enfant dans La Frac-Maconnerie Universelle, by A.C. De La Rive, pg. 588, and Occult Theocrasy, by Lady Queensborough, pg. 220,221) Quoted from Fourth Reich of the Rich, Griffin, pg. 70,71"

Of course I've heard of Albert Pike. He re-wrote the whole Scottish Rite, after all.

But I am not a member of Scottish Rite, so I've not been exposed to his words.

I am an Odinist, however, and I could personally care less if he uses the names of Christian bad guys or good guys in his writings.

We do not use the name Lucifer in Blue Lodge, nor is it to him who we offer prayer. Or any other evil entity, unless you consider any god but yours evil, and the member who invokes him in his heart (not out loud) evil as well. In that case, I cannot help you.

I've studied religion informally for 20 years and have never heard of LCMS.

You need to have at least a million members before you advance from "cult" to "church" status, IMHO.

And FYI, the Christians were a secret society when they first started out. Remember the fish symbol that they'd mark so that the "enlightened" would know where to meet?

I'm looking at a photograph of the ceremonial sword of Alexander Deuchar, Master of Scottish Templars and the hilt is topped by a skull and the guard is a crossed pair of bones. Some graves at the church Temple/Order of the Temple near Edinburgh have masonic dividers/squares as well as skull and cross-bones. Is the Skull and Bones Society at Yale a ripoff of the Scottish Order of the Temple??

As for you early Christian argument, I won't dignify it with a response. If you can not see the difference between a secret meeting and keeping the information secret, you're even more ignorant than I thought.

Everybody rips off the Masons, to one extent or another, because we're the oldest. The Elks rip off the Masons, as do the Eagles, the Wiccans, and probably the Odd-Fellows, if they're still in existence.

The skull and bones symbology is unique to Scottish Rite, which I have no knowledge of, however THE SKYDRIFTER has been through Scottish Rite, so you might ask him.

OK, that makes sense. I actually used to work for the ELCA (as a temp). So you got me on that one.

There are really very few things in Masonry that are secret, and all of them can be seen by watching the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree rituals on Youtube. [Note to X-15: It's more fun to go through if you haven't seen the rituals beforehand].

You'll notice that there's a whole lot of Bible kissing going on, and a lot of references to "God" and "The Holy Saint John". Even though nobody cares if you're a Hindu, a Jew, a Moslem, or Miscellaneous.

And "supposed" is the best we can do, though scholars have been working for 200 years to find a definite link between Masonry and the Knights Templar, they have been largely unsuccessful.

York Rite Masonry is as close as we come, and that's a relatively modern (last 200-300 years) invention.

There is no higher Mason than a 3rd Degree Mason. All additional degrees branch off, er, sideways, rather than up. If we choose, we may continue to seek further light in Masonry through the York Rite or the Scottish Rite. Having been through most of York Rite, I can tell you that it's even more Bible-centric than Blue Lodge, and that they're not giving away any real secrets there.

The secrets contained in Masonry are of an allegorical nature and mainly deal with how to live your life and how to treat other Brothers.

Well I do know that Masonry is the basis for a lot of what Aleister Crowley was into, and what that entails. So you aren't being totally honest with us Indrid.

If you were being honest, you'd admit that Masonry has adapted the Jewish Qaballah to the practice of Luciferian doctrine.

BTW, I find the Kabbalah (or Qabalah) highly interesting, but lean towards a more neutral view of it than anyone applying it in relation to a religious dogma.

Since what I've read of Pike indicates that at least a large body of Masonry deifies Lucifer, I can see people getting into serious problems touching upon the occult while holding Lucifer in such high regard.

It could well open the wrong doors.

Well I do know that Masonry is the basis for a lot of what Aleister Crowley was into, and what that entails. So you aren't being totally honest with us Indrid.

Crowley was initiated into the first degree of a "clandestine" (non-official) lodge in France at some point. Clandestine lodges and "regular" (official) lodges do not communicate. At all. He may have stolen some elements of Masonry, along with those of the OTO, to incorporate into his own organization, the A.A.

As far as the Jewish Qaballah to Luciferian doctrine question: Seriously--I'm a modern-day witch who prays to Odin to smite my enemies. I don't think I'd have a problem with using the Qaballah, or talking about it. In fact, I did some minor research on it years ago, and found it dreadfully dull. But I see no evidence of it in Masonry. Likewise the Luciferian stuff.

"The real deal is this: the ‘royalty’ controlling the court, the ones with the power, the ones with the ability to make a difference, with the ability to change our course, the ones who will live in infamy if we pass the tipping points, are the captains of industry, CEOs in fossil fuel companies such as EXXON/Mobil, automobile manufacturers, utilities, all of the leaders who have placed short-term profit above the fate of the planet and the well-being of our children." - James Hansen

I went to the Lodge meeting tonight. It was established in 1866, the 288th one in Texas since No. 1 in 1835, 188 members. It was some kind of "remembrance" night where they were going to read the minutes from a meeting 100 years ago, the guys wore overalls and served cornbread/stew/iced tea. Sat around talking about deer hunting, answered a few questions about Freemasonry (there's not many secrets beyond the handshake/signs they said) and I had to leave when they had their business meeting. They gave me a couple of handbooks and a petition and asked me to come back on Thursday night and meet some more members (Thursday is their school night).
