I'm going to a lodge meeting in a couple of weeks to see what it's all about. Is it a good way to network in my community? Most of the Founding Fathers were Masons as were most of the Founding Fathers of the Republic of Texas: www.grandlodgeoftexas.org/Tx_heroes-2.php

Repeating myself, and my father, when I was invited to a meeting, "Son, you don't want anything to do with those people." Cleaning and clearing his effects in '06, I found a little card that 'honorably discharged' him from the local lodge back in 1947.
Look around you at the fruit of what those so-called founding fathers started. That ought to give you some clue as to what it is all about. If not... well, you was warned.

Nope, but I have one in my family. Seems harmless; they ain't what they used to be though, and are shriveling right along with practically every other civic/fraternal organization. They've lowered their standards a lot to try to get numbers up.
If race doesn't matter, why, in the textbook on cultural diversity, is the section on blacks the longest and the section on asians the shortest?

I've been a mason for about 12 years. I haven't been very active the last 5 or 6 though. It's just a bunch of old men who meet twice a month and pay lodge bills. Then maybe a few times a year, we'd do a fund raising event of some kind... a dinner, whatever. The NWO never approached me to help them take over the world however.
I shall not vote for evil, lesser or otherwise. I don't want to belong to any group that would have me as a member. I was, briefly, a member of Bill Hicks' "People who hate people" party. We got together and passed one resolution, then permanently disbanded. However, you can see the results of our handiwork every day, on every jar lid in the English speaking world. The little print on the side of each lid that says "Screw Off". You're welcome.

It's just a bunch of snobby old men. I was a member from 1971 to 1984. I was a 32 degree. I also joined the Grotto. Every year the lodges in my county got together and put on the 16th degree at the fall reunion. I had the main part and was King Darius. The first few years it seemed fun but that wore off. The politics were awful. Talk about klicks. Favoritism was the rule rather than the exception. It was like being a lowly member of Who's Who. Looking back it was one of my youthful indescretions. So Mote It Be!

I always found the conspiracy theories about Freemasons to be a bit preposterous, and have relegated most of them to the larger competing cliques theory. Star in the East Lodge #33 represent! (Owatonna MN) I joined a couple of years ago without knowing what Masons do--all I knew was that if there was a conspiracy afoot, I wanted in! Still haven't found the conspiracy. What I have found are a great group of guys who I have a deep bond with--strangely enough, age, politics, and religion doesn't affect that bond. It's the world's largest and oldest fraternity--you'll have Brothers literally all over the world. You'll find that we're all a bunch of intelligent weirdos.

Checked out a couple of books from the campus library after class tonight, I'm reading up on the Old Charges and the differences between operative and speculative masonry. It seems to be "a peculiar systems of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols" to use their own words.

Uh, yes, that's accurate. The difference between operative and speculative masonry is that one builds walls and one doesn't, though they may share the same clubhouse. At some point in time (1400s-1500s) European noblemen were allowed to join Masonry, though why they'd want to join a labor guild is not elaborated upon. Presumably cosmic secrets were in a lot smaller supply back then... We refer to (small "g") god as the "Great Architect", not Lucifer. ("Small g" because Masonry requires you to have a belief in god as you understand him/her/it/them, not necessarily in the Christian sense.
