Title: RNC shells out $150K for Palin fashion

The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.

The cash expenditures immediately raised questions among campaign finance experts about their legality under the Federal Election Commission's long-standing advisory opinions on using campaign cash to purchase items for personal use.

Politico asked the McCain campaign for comment, explicitly noting the $150,000 in expenses for department store shopping and makeup consultation that were incurred immediately after Palin’s announcement. Pre-September reports do not include similar costs.

Spokeswoman Maria Comella declined to answer specific questions about the expenditures, including whether it was necessary to spend that much and whether it amounted to one early investment in Palin or if shopping for the vice presidential nominee was ongoing.

“The campaign does not comment on strategic decisions regarding how financial resources available to the campaign are spent," she said.

But hours after the story was posted on Politico's website and legal issues were raised, the campaign issued a new statement:

"With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign," said McCain-Palin spokesperson Tracey Schmitt

The business of primping and dressing on the campaign trail has become fraught with political risk in recent years as voters increasingly see an elite Washington out of touch with their values and lifestyles.

In 2000, Democrat Al Gore took heat for changing his clothing hues. And in 2006, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) was ribbed for two hair styling sessions that cost about $3,000.

Then, there was Democrat John Edwards’ $400 hair cuts in 2007 and Republican McCain’s $520 black leather Ferragamo shoes this year.

A review of similar records for the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee turned up no similar spending.

But all the spending by other candidates pales in comparison to the GOP outlay for the Alaska governor whose expensive, designer outfits have been the topic of fashion pages and magazines.

What hasn’t been apparent is where the clothes came from – her closet back in Wasilla or from the campaign coffers in Washington.

The answer can be found inside the RNC’s September monthly financial disclosure report under “itemized coordinated expenditures.”

It’s a report that typically records expenses for direct mail, telephone calls and advertising. Those expenses do show up, but the report also has a new category of spending: “campaign accessories.”

September payments were also made to Barney’s New York ($789.72) and Bloomingdale’s New York ($5,102.71).

Macy’s in Minneapolis, another store fortunate enough to be situated in the Twin Cities that hosted last summer’s Republican National Convention, received three separate payments totaling $9,447.71.

The entries also show a few purchases at Pacifier, a top notch baby store, and Steiniauf & Stroller Inc., suggesting $295 was spent to accommodate the littlest Palin to join the campaign trail.

An additional $4,902.45 was spent in early September at Atelier, a high-class shopping destination for men.

#5. To: Ferret Mike, thread (#0)

Simple minded articles that appeal to the basest of people's pettiness and jealousies, like this one, demonstrate the base mentallity of the author and/or transmitter (Ferret Mike) of it and its sole propaganda purpose.

While the U.S. government under the alleged guidance of either party spends countless billions/trillions on killing people around the world and even here at home, only a dupe or infil-traitor would would find this sort of attack useful as poopaganda for influencing others making a conscious decision related to choosing someone capable and worthy of America's trust to run the nation.

When either side resorts to shit like this it only demonstrates how far we as a society have fallen. To portray the relevance of $150,000.00 as critical in the election process today only exposes the superficiality of the writer and the reader that finds any merit in the writing.

Often times the political hackery (Ferret Mike) rationalize spreading manure over the mushroom heads (ignorant masses) to obtain their vote, and actually violate the very principles they claim (falsely) to maintain.

Policies that condone "any means to an end" would include half-truths and bullshit like Palin's wardrobe costs to inject superficial matters into the minds of the not so bright in order to accomplish a particular party's goal of gaining the uninformed vote of someone that these do-gooder assholes claim to protect. The truth is that if the (fake) do-gooders were truly interested in advancing the "victim class'" they would simply spend a little more time expressing the TRUTHS that are REAL and MEANINGFUL rather than subtle covetness.

Ferret, whomever is guiding you into the abyss of communistic "ends justify means" philosophy is destroying your soul and any claim to righteousness.

Frankly, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt regarding your political position until I see you operating dishonestly like you are with this simple minded attack on the superficial. We (Americans) really have monumental problems that need to be dealt with by qualified statesmen and freedom minded people in general, a re-education process that could actually move us in the direction offering an opportunity to recover from the past 100 years of this type of supeficiality that condones the process and keeps people stuck in a system meant to enslave them (all).

imo only, Mike wants to believe the people can change the leader. He thinks Barack will become what the people want him to be. The whole election is a side show to the catastrophic destruction of our nation and our economy.

Mike wants to believe the people can change the leader

I'd have to agree with this conclusion. I also think Mike over rates his own involvement, thinking he has some impact on the process or that he might obtain some respect or even a political plum for ignoring reason and supporting an obvious subversive like Obama. (Not that McCain is any less a subversive than Obama.)

The Bolshevik Revolution was filled with useful lackies until the coup was complete. Then the higher ranks eliminated the idiots they had used to foment the revolution to begin with ... Mike looks like one of these to me.

The Bolshevik Revolution was filled with useful lackies until the coup was complete.

so we got this big campaign to vilify obama, when the alternative to obama is a confirmed neocon, and if you elect that confirmed neocon, you're locked into more of the same...

bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb iran.

there is just the slightest chance, worth taking in the face of a lead pipe cinch that mccain is a neocon dingbat, that obama will doublecross his neocon supporters like kristol, just like putin doublecrossed berezovsky.

you'd rather sit in the frying pan when there's a remote chance that you'd miss the fire if you jumped out.

wonderful

you seem to have a problem with the remote possibility that powell has signed up a significant part of the military that will help obama nationalize the media.

Once again this is the original post. Concerning MIKE, not Powell or anyone else.

Drawing any other inference or conclusion is disingenuous.

Many of us here at 4um support no one involved with the system, most of us will not cast a vote for president, inferring such is a childs game practiced by a few that are unable to think for themselves.

it's not my problem that you think no hope is better than a sliver of hope.

just for your information, i've voted once, maybe twice, in the 40+ years i've been of voting age... and the time i'm sure about, maybe the second time, i was humoring a gang of friends who were disgusted with reagan, and they more or less frogmarched me to the polls.

i might have voted once before that, because i was browbeat into it by my wife.

i cannot remember a time in my life when i lived in any political hope... vietnam cured me of that.

I started voting for Ike.

I knew then the game was rigged when BOTH so called "parties" offered Ike their party nomination. Truman was shuffled off into retirement. A sure loser was forced into running on the democrat side. For those that were paying attention, the same loser was trotted out for the second go around with Ike.

With that fiasco it became apparent to all except the brain dead that there was only one party, that we were voting strictly on the lesser of two evils basis, when actually there was no lesser evil.

and now you're a confirmed no-hoper, and the best you can do is belittle people with hope.

nice

No hoper???

I go back to the 1930s, listening to the fireside chats of FDR, when people were enthralled with the man that would save the world. As a child I recall his promises about not sending American boys off to war in foreign lands etc etc.

FDR lied, the entire government lied, they were planning and preparing for war all the time. The exact same thing is happening now, McCain or Obama, makes no difference.

FDR brought us years of hunger and a terrible war. Truman brought us Korea, Johnson Vietnam, Bush Middle East with countless other affairs.

The government is the enemy, not one individual, not a dem or pub, they are all interchangeable.

...which gives you a perfect right to belittle people with political hope.

I have no rights.

I am a realist, not an optimist nor pessimist, rather a realist.

Supporting any part or person in the system makes one a part of the problem.

One needs to reduce the problem to its very basic premise, namely, the government is the problem and supporting the system, maintains the government and the problem.

This country was given birth by a Revolution which succeeded, tried to cleanse itself with a Civil War that failed, and now finds itself on the brink of an abyss.

who has a better chance of bring off a revolution that suits you, a confirmed neocon, or a semi-unknown quantity with a racial background that makes him the wildest card yet to come down the political pike...?

oh.

i forgot.

we already had a neocon coup, and you dont seem to like the results of that very much, which must explain why you're belittling a wildcard alternative and backing, by your attempts to degrade the alternative, more of the same old neocon shit.

you people dont make any sense.

First of all, one has to consider...none of the above...

This "government" will do anything to ensure its survival, because it is in their self interest. The Patriot Act and Homeland Security is their insurance policy.

We the sheep voting for the lesser of two evils return incumbents at a 95 per cent rate, ensuring a continuous professional politician government. We keep people in office until age 100, some are fixtures for over 50 years, all of which is a disgrace.

well, it's time for a radical change, then, isnt it?

too bad, by your efforts, you are attempting to hamstring the best chance for change, even though it's a tiny sliver of a chance.

in the meantime, being the realist you are, you have to face the fact that, no matter who's elected, it's very likely that america will waste its last chance to adjust to diminishing oil supplies, because america is instead attempting to (a) steal oil at gunpoint and (b) secure israel.

the only real question in the minds of the israelis, is: did we wait too long to kick the operation off?

americans are too befuddled to have any real questions, and israeli americans are looting the dying american empire, the better to buy themselves a refuge of last resort just in case america implodes before israel is secured.

in the meantime, seasoned observers such as yourself can think of nothing better to do than belittle people who are still able to hope.
