Palin Favors "path to citizenship" for Illegal Immigrants

Gov. Sarah Palin's view on Immigration appears to mirror that of Sen. John McCain. In an interview yesterday, she says she supports a "path to citizenship" for "undocumented" (i.e. illegal) immigrants:

Governor, let me ask you about immigration. How many undocumented immigrants are there in Alaska?

I don't know, I don't know. That's a good question.

As governor, how do you deal with them? Do you think they all should be deported?

There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that's not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.

Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?

No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They've got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

Poster Comment:

America is sooooooo screwed. Out of all the one party candidates--that would be McCain, Palin, Obama and Biden--there isn't one of them who wouldn't welcome every illegal alien who is already here and all the rest who want to come. The country is doomed.

Sarah, what the hell happened between us? I thought we had a good thing going: I vote for you and you remain hot without stepping in it. But, now, you have delivered the most unkindest cut of all. You stabbed me in the back after all we've been through, after I stuck up for you when my friends said we weren't right for each other. This is a deal-breaker for me, there is no way we can have a future together. I'm saying goodbye and I hope you find the voter that will make you happy.

X-15, I just wanted to say thanks for being a shining example of an open minded person. Only you and Justin Raimondo (him with Obama) have manned up and dumped the damaged political cargo overboard once their flaws became obvious. Bravo!

I'll second that.

I just wish that more right-leaning libertarians and left-leading anti-war activists would recognize Palin and Obama for the vacuous frauds that they are. It seems that with most people, once they make up their minds, no amount of evidence can convince them that they're wrong.

Well said, R_P. It's going to be a rocky road ahead for us folks who live by the code above, but it makes the most sense to me.

One of Ronald Reagan's biggest faults was that he supported his own form of amnesty for illegal aliens. When pressed about it by conservatives, he said something like "What's all the fuss about Mexicans coming over here illegally?"

Why do so many tough-talking conservatives turn into sappy liberals on the immigration issue? It must be because their corporate masters love that undocumented two buck an hour labor. The last time a mainstream politician did anything decent on the immigration issue was Eisenhower with "Operation Wetback."

One of Reagan's nicknames when he was the gov. of CA was "Ronald Region" given to him by opponents of regional government. He was for it. Regional government replaces elected officials w/appointed bureaucrats and blurs the lines bet. counties, thus making taxes and such "more equitable." My political mentor removed my rose colored RR glasses with that fact.

Further research indicates Reagan went along with the North American Union.

Just like Poppy, just like Xlinton, just like Chimp, just like McBama.
