Muscle pain is usually listed as a "rare" side effect in statin users. But comments from HSI members seem to indicate that maybe statin drug makers don't actually know what the word "rare" means.

Patti3046: "My dad was on statins for years. He developed symptoms of dementia, and became a hoarder. His short term memory became increasingly worse. He developed muscle cramps in odd places, especially the midtrunk area. These cramps were severe, like charley horses.

"I read some things on the net alluding to joint pain, muscle cramps and mental deterioration being side effects of statin drugs. I took him off the statin, and off the Aricept which did not seem to help his Alzheimers. I put him on Huperzine, gotu kola, B- 12 1000 mcg twice a day and asked the doctor to give him monthly B12 shots. He became a new person.

"He still is averse to throwing away something someone might need, but is willing to give it away gladly if someone needs it. He now encourages me to take things when I go there. His confusion does come back some when he gets off his regime, and I usually find out he has run out of something.

"I told him to take dolomite for the muscle cramps, but with a few months off of the statins, they no longer occur.

"He takes two dolomite (a calcium/magnesium supplement) each evening. I also put him on sea salt and Vitamin E 1000 IU, and he got off his blood pressure medication. He is proud that he is off most of his medications now. He takes only a heart pill (which is next to go, I hope), and a prostate pill.

"Now my sense is that the rise in use of statins is responsible for the rise in Alzheimers."

Jo: "Apart from the skin rash, the insomnia and twitching in bed, I had brand new muscle pains. It took about 5 or 6 weeks for those pains to fade. And about the same time for the rash to fade, too. Sleep normalized within a few days. Statins? Pure poison."

Verdie: "After I stopped, the pain SLOWLY went away. Also my liver enzymes got elevated from taking them."

Omie: "I let my doc talk me into statins a few years ago, tried 3 different ones and got slight muscle pains with each one."
