Government computers used to find information on Joe the Plumber

Investigators trying to determine whether access was illegal

Friday, October 24, 2008 8:57 PM

By Randy Ludlow

The Columbus Dispatch

"State and local officials are investigating if state and law-enforcement computer systems were illegally accessed when they were tapped for personal information about "Joe the Plumber."

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher became part of the national political lexicon Oct. 15 when Republican presidential candidate John McCain mentioned him frequently during his final debate with Democrat Barack Obama.

The 34-year-old from the Toledo suburb of Holland is held out by McCain as an example of an American who would be harmed by Obama's tax proposals.

Public records requested by The Dispatch disclose that information on Wurzelbacher's driver's license or his sport-utility vehicle was pulled from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles database three times shortly after the debate.

Information on Wurzelbacher was accessed by accounts assigned to the office of Ohio Attorney General Nancy H. Rogers, the Cuyahoga County Child Support Enforcement Agency and the Toledo Police Department.

It has not been determined who checked on Wurzelbacher, or why. Direct access to driver's license and vehicle registration information from BMV computers is restricted to legitimate law enforcement and government business.

Paul Lindsay, Ohio spokesman for the McCain campaign, attempted to portray the inquiries as politically motivated. "It's outrageous to see how quickly Barack Obama's allies would abuse government power in an attempt to smear a private citizen who dared to ask a legitimate question," he said.

Isaac Baker, Obama's Ohio spokesman, denounced Lindsay's statement as charges of desperation from a campaign running out of time. "Invasions of privacy should not be tolerated. If these records were accessed inappropriately, it had nothing to do with our campaign and should be investigated fully," he said.

The attorney general's office is investigating if the access of Wuzelbacher's BMV information through the office's Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway computer system was unauthorized, said spokeswoman Jennifer Brindisi.

"We're trying to pinpoint where it came from," she said. The investigation could become "criminal in nature," she said. Brindisi would not identify the account that pulled the information on Oct. 16.

Records show it was a "test account" assigned to the information technology section of the attorney general's office, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Thomas Hunter.

Brindisi later said investigators have confirmed that Wurzelbacher's information was not accessed within the attorney general's office. She declined to provide details. The office's test accounts are shared with and used by other law enforcement-related agencies, she said.

On Oct. 17, BMV information on Wurzelbacher was obtained through an account used by the Cuyahoga County Child Support Enforcement Agency in Cleveland, records show.

Mary Denihan, spokeswoman for the county agency, said the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services contacted the agency today and requested an investigation of the access to Wurzelbacher's information. Cuyahoga County court records do not show any child-support cases involving Wurzelbacher.

The State Highway Patrol, which administers the Law Enforcement Automated Data System in Ohio, asked Toledo police to explain why it pulled BMV information on Wurzelbacher within 48 hours of the debate, Hunter said.

The LEADS system also can be used to check for warrants and criminal histories, but such checks would not be reflected on the records obtained by The Dispatch.

Sgt. Tim Campbell, a Toledo police spokesman, said he could not provide any information because the department only had learned of the State Highway Patrol inquiry today.

Outrageous? It's about to become S.O.P. if these jackboots get in power.

Riiiiight. As opposed to those Constitution-loving law-abiding Republicans who abolished habeas corpus, posse comitatus and created Guantanamo Bay, before gutting the SEC, wiping out all oversight of Wall Street and then pushing through a nearly trillion dollar bailout of those same Wall Street gangsters. Oh, but now we're supposed to be all scared of Democrats doing "dirty tricks". Riiiight. Oh no! You mean the Democrats might be worse? One question: HOW? Seriously.

Fess up, I'm sure you've no stranger to voting RAT.

Now, get ready for the wetbacks to overrun you as soon as they get wind of obama's blanket amnesty.

Right. Because, of course, the Republicans did SUCH a great job in cutting back illegal immigration. Ah yes, I remember well watching tens of thousands of employers of illegals being arrested, prosecuted and incarcerated for hiring illegals thanks to those ever-watchful Republicans. Oh... wait, that's right. There was about five "showboat" arrests done, very publicly, and that was... pretty much it. And those were in the last year. The previous seven years the Republicans did pretty much nothing about illegals, and why should they? Illegals are cheap to hire and help drive down wages for working people. Republicans love illegals just as much if not more than Democrats do. Oh, and remember that FIRST amnesty that passed? The one that happened on REAGAN'S watch?

Bottom line, if my choice is to vote between RATS and PIGS..... I'll vote for neither, thank you. Both parties can burn in Hell as far as I'm concerned, but this time around, thanks to the loathsome George W. Bush and the truly heinous Dick Cheney I'm really hoping the Republicans get throughly routed at the polls this November. I'm reminded of the line from Vietnam, "We had to destroy the village in order to save it". Well, in this case, I'm thinking we are going to have to destroy the Republicans in order to save them.

Elliott

Let me share a little information with you. Unfortunately, Ronald Reagan's Alzheimer's disease started to manifest itself in his first term. By his second term, the disease had impaired him to the point where George(daddy)Bush was calling most of the shots. Do you ever wonder why Nancy Reagan and the Bushs don't speak, even to this day?

While Ronald Reagan is now taking the blame for the amnesty, it was in fact Bush that made it policy.

Bottom line, if my choice is to vote between RATS and PIGS..... I'll vote for neither, thank you.

I can't blame you and I respect you for wanting to vote third party. I voted 3d party in 2004, but I did because I had the luxury of doing so. In 2004 the Republican party controlled Congress and the White House and I didn't think we'd lose both. Also, my State was sure to go to Kerry and my Congressional District was so gerrymandered (due to minority neighborhoods) that a conservative candidate would never be elected. I voted a straight Libertarian ticket with the exception of Keyes in the Senate race.

Today we don't have that same luxury. The democrats control both houses of congress and if they get the White House too, we're going to get a radical swing to the left this country has never seen before. Let me outline what a 100% democrat government would give us.

We're going to get:

Leftist activist judges appointed to the federal bench like never before.

Leftist Supreme Court Justices who will undermine the Constitution for the next 25 years or more.

A blanket amnesty for illegals (McCain talks about a "path to citizenship", I don't know what that is but I don't think it's a blanket amnesty)

A return of the "Fairness Doctrine" which will shut down talk radio and maybe even websites.

Sweeping new gun laws, obama wants to ban .308 & .223 ammo for civilians

Higher taxes for everybody

Am I mad at the Republicans, yes, but I can't allow my emotions to override what I think is best for this country. I don't have the luxury this time to vote 3d party. IMO if the democrats take control of the entire government it will be catastrophic.

Impossible ... we've already swung to the far left. This country is a socialist shit hole that remains afloat because it has a military advantage.

Voting for any of the political scum is tantamount to condoning the system that produces them decade after decade. (McCain is a leftist RINO).

Maybe if we veer into the further left lane far enough someone will fire the shot heard around the nation !!!

More news every day from Afghan/Pakistan about bad people. Just in time for American intervention on a broader scale. And right in Chinas front yard, poke the Bear with a stick, jab the Dragon and we will get a response.
