SANTA FE, New Mexico (CNN) – For The New Mexico Sun News it is either a major scoop or “Dewey Beats Truman” déjà vu 60 years later. “Obama Wins!” is the headline of the edition on newsstands now, complete with “special collector’s edition” in red bold typeface. The Sun News is a bi-monthly newspaper and its Oct 26-Nov 8 issue had to hit the streets, and the newsstands, before the election. So the editors decided to make a leap of faith and declare Democrat Barack Obama the winner. In an article explaining their choice, the editors unabashedly wrote, “When it comes to calling the winner of a presidential election, everyone wants to be first. The New Mexico Sun News hereby claims that achievement.” In its tongue-in-cheek style, the article went on to note the newspaper has a goal of reaching one million readers with each edition, but prints just 10,000 copies of each of its issues. So, “each copy must be read by 100 different and distinct people. This places an enormous burden on our intrepid readers. However, it is a burden that we must insist you carry. So, please, read quickly, care for the physical condition of the paper and pass it on to your next chosen reader.” The liberal leaning alternative newspaper ended by imploring its readers to get out and vote, “even if we did spoil the ending for you.” Poster Comment: I got this from gasp! The World Book Encyclopedia did the same thing in 1980 when it printed that Ronald Reagan would be the next president several months before the election. Yup, they called the election and went to print. Of course they may be privy to info that we aren't and it really wasn't an election at all....
He will never be my president.
