NYers to NYPD: 'I Do Not Consent to Being Searched'

by Chisun Lee
July 21st, 2005 6:36 PM

Reacting to the NYPD's announcement Thursday afternoon that police would randomly—but routinely—search the bags of commuters, one concerned New Yorker quickly created a way for civil libertarians to make their views black-and-white. In a few outraged moments, local immigrant rights activist Tony Lu designed t-shirts bearing the text, "i do not consent to being searched." The minimalist protest-wear can be purchased here, in various styles and sizes. (Lu will not get a cut. The shirts' manufacture, sale, and shipment, will be handled by the online retailer. Lu encourages budget-conscious New Yorkers to make their own and wear them everywhere.)

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly had announced the legally obvious—that New Yorkers are free to decline a search and "turn around and leave." But Lu, who is a lawyer at Urban Justice Center, warned that even well-intentioned cops could interpret people's natural nervousness or anger as "reasonable suspicion." The possibility of unjustified interrogation and even arrest is real, Lu said.

Although police promised they would not engage in racial profiling, Lu said that, as with all street-level policing, people of color and poor immigrants would be particularly vulnerable, especially if encounters lead to arrests.

NYPD had started the searches this morning. Another good reason not to visit NYC.

I'm listening to CNN. I don't think this is going over very well with the rush hour millions. One NY'er said he now feels he lives in Russia. My question is what will the cops do with the person who refuses to allow them search their property? Will they do it anyway (I smell an ACLU lawsuit) or simply not let that person on the train without a search? If that's the case, in theory, they might be allowing a person suspected of carrying a bomb to simply walk away. If even a few hundred people a day refuse the search, the process stalls. Civil disobedience at its finest.

They are gaining total control of the masses one bombing incident at a time. It will be soon impossible to have anti-government protests in the "interests" of security. Bloomberg doesn't want any more of those embarrassing mass protests in the streets of NYC.

But he's a Republican! (g)

I so remember arguing with the FReepers when he was elected. They were celebrating, while I was calling him a scumbag. I was right, unfortunately.

I just listened to a report on MSM radio about the searches.

Of course, all the people they interviwed were completely for them.

Comments like "They should have done this a long time ago" and "I feel more secure now."

Perfect propaganda for the sheeple to consume en masse.

We're all screwed just because of ignorance.

Bloomberg probably has them looking for Indian Reservation cigarettes too.

I'm a few miles outside of NYC. THE MSM here is really pushing the disclaimer of 'don't worry, there will be no racial profiling.'

The disclaimer was made yesterday in every report on it immediately. IOW, the MSM was making the issue profiling, and not the actual searches themselves. WABC was particularly bad on this. They would make the statement about racial profiling at the end of their reports- to punctuate. The last statement they make in a report is likely to be remembered more than the statements earlier in the report.

Since all media put such a primary importance on 'no profiling' and the govt is it's biggest proponent, it seems like the media was told to make it a big issue and it loyally complied.

Hearing these reports was surreal. Especially to someone not Muslim. The govt is saying there is a serious risk of young Muslim men bombing mass transit, thus they have to unconstitutionally search people for their own good. But they punctuate the issue with another issue, profiling. So they are saying, openly, that if they are searching 1 out of 30 people, and if the 1st 29 are young Muslim men and the 30th is a 75 yr old white female, they will let all the Muslim men thru and search that 30th woman.

So, i think they are promoting the racial profiling issue to take attention away from the more serious issue. As well as serving the cultural Marxism gods, because, it is NY after all. And they can't be serious about the threat if they consider whites and Muslims to be Marxism like equals, one no more a threat than another. After all, Muslims are an oppressed group and therefore the near 100% likelihood that they would be the participants in an attack must be overlooked, because that would lead to further oppression. The other classes have to endure the threat, because the Marxist doctrine is primary. Negative consequences to 'oppressor' class mean nothing in this doctrine. The police and the govt can't even say that there is a greater risk from Muslim men, so be on the lookout, further weakening everybody's defenses against an attack. I'm only pointing out the hypocrisy above about the searches. I don't think Muslims should be searched either.
