Do You Know What This Is?

It is a hard drive of 5 MB from 1956...

In September of 1956 IBM launched 305 RAMAC, the first computer with a hard disk/drive.

The hard drive weighed about a ton and had a capacity of 5 MB...

And you are complaining about your Pen Drive of 4 GB, isn't that right? (1 image)

Neat post - thanks. What a difference 52 years makes - and the progress will be more than that difference within the next half-century.

You're welcome.

I remember one of my professors talking about working for one of the Big Three automakers in the late seventies and how they were excited to get a new mainframe with 16k. He recalled several comments like "16K? We could never use all that".

Maybe it was late 60's, 16K sounds ridiculous small. It's incredible though, that anyone with a couple hundred dollars can have who know how many times the computing power it took to develop A-bombs. I'd bet if I was choosy about it, was willing to waste a lot of time, I could find a fine Pentium-4 box in good working order for under $30. Sounds like the making of a new reality show, know any rich hollywood coke-heads?

Just think, all that huge hard drive takes a forklift to put on a plane and it wouldn't hold over a couple of songs!

Yeah, I guess they did think that was fast. But you sure couldn't use your computer to talk to anyone the way you can now (like on Skype or Google Talk) without a fast connection.
