In 1932, J.M. Custer of Piggott, Arkansas had an idea for a car that would run on compressed air. He not only built the car, but it actually ran. He used an engine that resembled a radial airplane motor in appearance. It was mounted upright in the same space occupied by gasoline motors in standard cars. Four tanks filled with compressed air powered the car 500 miles at a speed of 35 miles an hour. The engine did not require a cooling system, ignition system, carburetor, nor the hundreds of moving parts included in a standard gasoline motor.

The technology didn’t attract much interest for 75 years. But it’s resurfacing, using today’s high technology.

A research and development company called Magnetic Air Cars, Inc. is developing an air-powered prototype car in Silicon Valley. They believe that their design will be sufficient to power a modern new vehicle, or retrofit a used vehicle -- even a large SUV or truck.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the idea of making a car that could run on something as innocuous as air or water seemed completely preposterous. But fortunately, things do change, albeit slowly.

The Magnetic Air Car is actually not the first of its kind, although this Almaden Times article doesn’t mention that fact.

The Air Car, by Luxembourg-based Moteur Developement Int. (MDI) also runs on compressed air technology, and, according to a January article in the MIT publication Technology Review, the Air Car is already set to go into commercial production. MDI has struck a deal with India’s largest carmaker, Tata Motors, to put the non-polluting vehicles on the streets of India sometime this year.

The MDI Air Car may also offer up some healthy competition against the Magnetic Air Car here in the U.S.

According to an article in Popular Mechanics, Zero Pollution Motors -- the U.S. licensee for MDI -- expects to produce the world’s first air-powered car for the United States by late 2009 or early 2010.

Folks, this is a much better option than a hybrid or electric car, which literally envelopes you in strong electromagnetic fields. Best of all, it has NO EMISSIONS whatsoever.

We are simply running out of excuses for not converting to safer (and cheaper!), renewable energy sources that don’t turn the Earth into a toxic waste dump with every mile we drive.

I found the first one quite interesting;

The writer has misinformed through omission. In 1935 Garrett in USA patented the in-car-produced-hydrogen vehicle. It used platinum and palladium electrodes, inside a stainless steel tank in the trunk, and needed only an extra battery, to run at 24 volts. US patents are not issued for fictional non-working products. Many add-ons are today available to add hydrogen (or Browns gas, Hydrogen and oxygen) through a vehicles air intake, to lower fuel consumption. Naturally it is illegal to sell these in US, (bad for Exxon et al), so they come in kit form only. So called over- energy devices exist. Patented by Dr Tom Beardon, or not patented by Newmann, but nobody dare manufacture these. We believe et tech. has been back engineered in US, so really its all about profits for oil. From where do you think that we got the transistor in 1948? Here, tech 200 years ahead of ours, was suddnely ìnvented`in 1948, just after Roswell, by a team that was working on minitiarising the vacuum tube. With the transistor also suddenly came fibre optics and the microprocessor.Science fiction or a wing nut conspiracy theory? Go to theyfly.com and you decide. After all, if you read mercola.com, you look outside the box. If you think hydrogen tech is beyond our scientists, then please explain to me that if they can have color digital pictures sent back from planet Mars, that they cannot efficiently split a water molecule.

That was the explanation in Men In Black for their financing.

In industry, air is considered another utility like electricity or water. It is not cheap. Compressors will be required to supply the H.P. air to refill the cylinders on these cars. They aren't very efficient, particularly at high pressures. They require electricty to operate. H.P. air is dangerous. I don't expect to see this concept get off the ground.

Yes they are.. I've got Garrett's "Hydrogen carburetor" patent on my desktop somewhere.

It doesn't work. But it is patented.

No, you better not manufacture one.. because standard electrolysis is insufficient to run a car.

Make it if you want though, no one will care. They're doing it all over You Tube right now.

Alternative forms of breaking water into hydrogen and oxygen would be welcomed, however.

Pro Tip: Hydrogen and (likely) magnetism are mentioned in the Bible as future power sources.
