They will develop national guidelines for service- learning and will give schools better tools both to develop programs and to document student experience. This is terrible. True patriots never do community service.

For the record, my kids do a lot more than 50 hours of community service. They are Boy Scouts. My wife teaches Sunday school and helps some old people keep their homes in decent shape.

But, OMG... true patriots won't do that. What true patriots do is place stickers on their bumpers identifying themselves as true patriots, watch the Springer show and get themselves disgustingly fat.

True patriots do community service on their own.

They do not serve due to Government mandate.

Once this becomes a mandate, it is not community service. It is serfdom.

America Serves

"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

To the extent that participation is optional it is a lot less serfdom that, let's say, the military service - which bribes true patriots with scholarships and bonuses to enroll themselves as slaves and servants of the CINC.

Military service is still voluntary right now. You do not have to put on the uniform and serve so this is a false comparison.

We will see how this plays out; the initial verbage sounds a lot like the Income Tax where you will 'volunteer' to pay or you are placed in shackles.

I posted that part of 'the agenda' that has to do with 'service' above. It says that the kids who do 100 hours get $4000 in tuition aid and that they're going to beg the elderly to help a little which many of them do already. I saw no evidence of compulsory voluntary work.
