All things considered, trying to do a big gun grab right now would be about the single most boneheaded, tone deaf, and generally STUPID idea the Democrats could even hope to conceive of. First of all, the more ardent supporters of the Democrats, the most left wing liberals of all could mostly give a flying leap about the issue. There's about a dozen issues that are more important to his supporters, like health care for example. Second of all, it would totally fire up opposition to his administration, and would energize the Republicans in a manner that pretty much nothing else could possibly do, short of officially designating Bibles and American flags as "kindling" and using them to light bonfires on TV just before Monday Night Football.
If Obama has ten functioning neurons in his skull, and any political smarts whatsoever, he'll smile and nod to those who say "we need to get the guns off of the streets", and say "Gosh, I understand what you're saying, but the Supreme Court already ruled on that and it's out of my hands", and then get on with doing other things.
