I'm not a Bible thumper, but I thought you might consider this: The flow of history is complex, and can't be easily understood with reference to isolated events or individual movements. Who knows? If the Vikings hadn't hit a patch of icy climate when they did, we might all be speaking Norse on this side of the drink.
