JFK: The Dallas Press Club 'Drinking Incident'

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread414702/pg1

Mr Marrs

As you are undoubtably aware, on the night prior to the assassination of JFK a number of the Secret Service men were involved in a 'drinking incident' at the Dallas Press Club and later The Cellar night club. Most of those assigned to the security detail at Love Field and the follow-on car were involved in the 'incident'. Though most of the SS men present at the Press Club did not consume alcohol, the majority of those that did, were on duty the next day. Similarly, those that went from the Press Club to the Cellar were, in the majority, on duty from early the next morning.

There seems to have been a 'sweeping under the carpet' of the incident, and no serious reprimands, although drinking while on duty (which the SS guidelines clearly state being on such a tour constitutes being on duty 24/7) is a dismissable offence.

As you yourself were once the president of the Dallas Press Club I wondered whether you could shed any further light on the incident. Is there any 'inside scoop'?

The Secret Service "drinking incident" is fully covered on pages 246-249 in my book Crossfire. But allow me to clarify some points for you. The incident took place in Fort Worth the night before the assassination. The Dallas motorcade was the second motorcade of Nov. 22, 1963. The first was that morning when the Kennedys were driven in a motorcade from the Hotel Texas in downtown Fort Worth to Carswell AFB, where they boarded Air Force One for the short hop to Dallas' Love Field, where it landed about 11:45 a.m..

So it was the Fort Worth Press Club involved. As you noted, I once was president of the Fort Worth Press Club and you are correct in stating that this whole affair was "swept under the carpet," with the argument that losing the president was punishment enough for the SS men involved. I could tell you much detail about this incident but here is neither the time nor place. I will just say that although Pat Kirkwood's Cellar technically did not serve alcohol, any one who was any one could get a gratis alcoholic drink. I know because I did. Also, the agents who were to protect JFK the next day did not "party." They simply sat by themselves drinking heavily and talking quietly amongst themselves. Their actions have been described as commandos bracing themselves for the next day's op. And it is true that when the shots rang out in Dealey Plaza, only SS Agent Clint Hill reacted. Hill was not at the Cellar nor was he originally supposed to be on the JFK tour. He was assigned to Jackie Kennedy and was brought along at the last minute due to her insistence.

Kennedy was a POS and got what he deserved. Too bad Oswald didn't take him out before he got us involved in Vietnam,

Anyone who doesn't realize what Kennedy was knows nothing about him.

And it was Oswald alone. What sort of conspiracist nuts hold a trial for 45 years?

Pugs rule, all other dogs drool.

The involvement in Nam started near the end of the Truman administration, was escalated during the Eisenhower years and escalated during the first couple of years Kennedy was in office. When Kennedy took office, the United States was already involved in Vietnam. President Eisenhower had guaranteed South Vietnam's security. Eisenhower had sent military and economic aid, as well as U.S. military advisors, to South Vietnam. Kennedy escalated U.S. involvement. Kennedy decided to begin pulling 1000 American military personnel out of Nam each month for 15 months until all were home. He was shot after he pulled the first 1000 out. Kennedy had made the decision to get out of Nam and that is one of the reasons he was killed by certain government insiders.

To the End, Kennedy Tried to Pull Back From Vietnam Brink

query.nytimes.com/gst/ful...50C0A964958260&sec=&spon=

President Kennedy was determined to let the public believe he had all intentions to carry on with the war in Vietnam. In 1963, Kennedy's special counsellor, Arthur M. Schlesinger said "Kennedy was still playing out his public hand while secretly wondering how to get out." This gives us a clear view that he in fact intended to withdraw regardless of victory, by mid-1965. President Kennedy supported a full military withdrawal from Vietnam, but he said "if he announced a withdrawal of American military personnel from Vietnam before the 1964 election, there would be a wild conservative outcry against returning him to the Presidency for a second term." Further he said in a private comment to the White House aide, Kenneth O'Donnell, "In 1965, I'll become one of the most unpopular Presidents in history. I'll be damned everywhere as a Communist appeaser. But I don't care. If I tried to pull out completely now from Vietnam, we would have another Joe McCarthy scare on our hands, but I can do it after I'm reelected. So we had better make damned sure that I am reelected." It was very important for President Kennedy not to let the public know his withdrawal plans. In a very confusing press conference on 14 November 1963, he said the Honolulu conference that was to come, would concentrate on "how we can intensify the struggle, how we can bring Americans out of there. Now that is our object, to bring Americans out of there."

In 1963, the American author and historian, John Newman, said "Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, was determined to execute the President's intent: A genuine withdrawal from Vietnam." He also mentions that McNamara gave instructions to General Harkins to come up with a plan to "wrap things up and come home."
