I'm getting tired of revisionist twaddle from the Sons of Confederate Veterans ("Hopkins intolerant of traditional values," letters, Dec. 5). There was nothing noble or honorable about fighting for the Confederacy. This was a league of traitors who precipitated a war that led to the deaths of more than 600,000 Americans. Should anyone doubt that the war was fought over the practice of human slavery, I suggest they read the secession declarations of the various Confederate state legislatures. After their disgraceful rebellion was crushed, many of these Southern "gentlemen" engaged in a war of terror to prevent their former slaves from enjoying the rights they were entitled to under the Constitution. This is a tradition we should be ashamed of, not celebrate. I applaud the decision of Johns Hopkins to refuse to be associated with this nonsense. And, as for the Lee-Jackson monument, perhaps the time has come to melt it down and recast it as a memorial to the victims of slavery and lynchings and the heroes of the civil rights era. It was the War for Southern Indepence, and they should have won. 95% of Southerners owned no slaves. The 5% who did were partly fighting for slavery, but the rest of the war was overwhelmingly about the North trying to suck the South dry financially.

Benjamin's slavery-supporting career started when he argued the "Creole Case" representing an insurance company with an interest in a slave cargo. He was described by Richard S. Tedlow as: The most important American-Jewish diplomat before Henry Kissinger, the most eminent lawyer before Brandeis, the leading figure in martial affairs before Hyman Rickover, the greatest American-Jewish orator, and the most influential Jew ever to take a seat in the United States Senate... But it was Benjamin the senator who supported the institution of slavery, contending that it was more humane to whip and brand the Black man than to imprison or transport him. Ohio's abolitionist senator, Benjamin F. Wade, denounced Benjamin as, "An Israelite with the principles of an Egyptian." Benjamin was born on Saint Croix in the West Indies on August 6, 1811. His father was a drifter who has been described as "that rara avis, an unsuccessful Jew" and his mother was of Portuguese descent. The family moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 1822, and soon thereafter Benjamin attracted the attention of a wealthy Jew who sent him first to private school and then to Yale. He left without taking a degree, he claimed, because of financial straits, but there is considerable evidence that he was dismissed for disciplinary reasons. He was elected to the federal senate in 1852 where he neglected no opportunity to defend the institution of slavery. Confederate president Jefferson Davis chose Benjamin to be attorney general, but in nine months transferred him to the most important of the Confederacy's cabinet positions, Secretary of War. It soon became common knowledge that, next to Davis, Benjamin was the most influential man in the rebel government. Bertram W. Korn pointed out the irony that Benjamin's honors were "in some measure dependent upon the sufferings of the very Negro slaves he [and others] bought and sold with such equanimity....Few politicians are as consistent in anything as Benjamin was in support of the 'peculiar institution.' Indeed, there was truth in Ben Wade's clever slur..." Even Jewish historian Morris U. Schappes has written that "history has found Benjamin guilty and his cause evil." This attempt to focus the debate is designed to limit our historical inquiry and to suggest that we Blacks are to care only about our Black family within America's political boundaries. This view also conveniently limits the consideration of evidence of direct Jewish involvement as whip-wielders in the slave trade which is so abundant in the southern part of the Western Hemisphere. By the time of the Jewish migration into what is now the United States, Jews were less involved in the direct trade but remained significant beneficiaries by their involvement in the plantation economy. Jews in the South were of the merchant class, according to a Jewish historian, having developed "a separate and distinctive accommodation to the plantation economy." The Southern planters depended upon these merchants to move their produce to market as well as for a source of supplies and financing. Jews had become commission merchants, brokers, auctioneers, cotton wholesalers, slave clothing dealers, and peddlers, keeping the slave economy oiled with money, markets and supplies. It is no mystery why the Jews were absent from representation in the ranks of the Abolitionists. The American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society in their report of 1853 expressed their frustration at the lack of Jews: "The Jews of the United States have never taken any steps whatever with regard to the slavery question. As citizens, they deem it their policy to have every one choose which ever side he may deem best to promote his own interests and the welfare of his country. They have no organization of an ecclesiastical body to represent their general views; no General Assembly, or its equivalent. The American Jews have two newspapers, but they do not interfere in any discussion which is not material to their religion. It cannot be said that the Jews have formed any denominational opinion on the subject of American slavery....The objects of so much mean prejudice and unrighteous oppression as the Jews have been for ages, surely they, it would seem, more than any other denomination, ought to be the enemies of caste, and friends of universal freedom." One study by Ira Rosenwaike published by the American Jewish Historical Society has shown that 75% of the Jews of the South owned Black slaves while 36% of the White population owned slaves. Ask the Jewish critics to name one (just one) prominent Colonial American Jew who did not own slaves. He will have the same difficulty as the Anti-Defamation League of the B'nai B'rith had in their 1976 pamphlet entitled, American Jews: Their Story. The ADL lists 13 pioneers of the American Jewish community - 10 of whom have been definitively linked to the slave trade. Some Jewish scholars of today, such as Jacob Rader Marcus, chart the wealth and prestige of their ancestors by the number of Black slaves they possessed. The point that the "Coalition" eludes is the utter failure of Judaism to control this oppressive impulse on the part of these Jews. As Rabbi Bertram Korn, the foremost scholar of nineteenth century Jewish history, has written: "It would seem to be realistic to conclude that any Jew who could afford to own slaves and had need for their services would do so....Jews participated in every aspect and process of the exploitation of the defenseless blacks." When Rabbi David Einhorn of Civil War era Baltimore, a true Jewish friend of Black people stood up for the humanity of the Black Man using the holy principles of Judaism from the Torah, his words were brilliant: "America of the future will not rest on slave chains or belittling its adopted citizens. It will also give up its disinterestedness in the fate of other peoples of the world....[T]he next battles will leave a real blood bath, but slavery will be drowned in that bath." Alas, his own congregation physically expelled him from his position as rabbi and ultimately from the city. They opted, as most Jews did, to accept the "Judaism" of the most prominent rabbi of the time Morris J. Raphall: "[I]t remains a fact which cannot be gainsaid that in his own native home, and generally throughout the world, the unfortunate negro is indeed the meanest of slaves. Much had been said respecting the inferiority of his intellectual powers, and that no man of his race has ever inscribed his name on the Parthenon of human excellence, either mental or moral." The historical record is formidable and well-represented in The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews, Volume One. Within 334 pages there are 1,275 footnotes containing multiple references for the reader to examine. The irrefutable record of Jewish historical compliance with Black oppression is no longer a "secret." The debate has surely changed. The Washington Post has confirmed the accuracy of The Secret Relationship while exposing the ignorance of its media critics. University of Chicago African Studies professor and Jew Ralph A. Austen has written in Tikkun Magazine that the "substantive content...seems fairly accurate." Furthermore he says, "The authors of The Secret Relationship underestimate the structural importance of the Jews in the early stages of the New World slave trade." Many of the major slaveholders in the South were Jews. They had no alternative, urge the white trash to fight in hopes they could somehow maintain their wealth if the South won. That is why Benjamin was a typical Jew suckup to Davis. As usual he was playing both sides of the street. There is a great deal of "history" concerning the South that we were never taught.

I thank you kindly. I'm a bit of a student of the War of Northern Aggression. In my opinion it was the first step down the road to perdition for our political system.
Most welcome... I find it encouraging when people take time to learn about our past history, a past that is never taught in any school, never mentioned in MSM. The South knew full well what was coming in the way of oppressive government, that was affirmed after Roosevelt became dictator for life and term limits had to be brought forth. Way ahead of their time.

May we carry fire and sword into their states till not one habitation is left standing." The Geneva Convention of 1863 condemned the bombardment of cities occupied by civilians, but Lincoln ignored all such restrictions on his behavior. The bombardment of Atlanta destroyed 90 percent of the city, after which the remaining civilian residents were forced to depopulate the city just as winter was approaching and the Georgia countryside had been stripped of food by the federal army. In his memoirs Sherman boasted that his army destroyed more than $100 million in private property and carried home $20 million more during his "march to the sea." Sherman was not above randomly executing innocent civilians as part of his (and Lincoln’s) terror campaign. In October of 1864 he ordered a subordinate, General Louis Watkins, to go to Fairmount, Georgia, "burn ten or twelve houses" and "kill a few at random," and "let them know that it will be repeated every time a train is fired upon." Another Sherman biographer, Lee Kennett, found that in Sherman’s army "the New York regiments were . . . filled with big city criminals and foreigners fresh from the jails of the Old World." Although it is rarely mentioned by "mainstream" historians, many acts of rape were committed by these federal soldiers. The University of South Carolina’s library contains a large collection of thousands diaries and letters of Southern women that mention these unspeakable atrocities. Shermans’ band of criminal looters (known as "bummers") sacked the slave cabins as well as the plantation houses. As Grimsley describes it, "With the utter disregard for blacks that was the norm among Union troops, the soldiers ransacked the slave cabins, taking whatever they liked." A routine procedure would be to hang a slave by his neck until he told federal soldiers where the plantation owners’ valuables were hidden. General Philip Sheridan is another celebrated "war hero" who followed in Sherman’s footsteps in attacking defenseless civilians. After the Confederate army had finally evacuated the Shenandoah Valley in the autumn of 1864 Sheridan’s 35,000 infantry troops essentially burned the entire valley to the ground. As Sheridan described it in a letter to General Grant, in the first few days he "destroyed over 2200 barns . . . over 70 mills . . . have driven in front of the army over 4000 head of stock, and have killed . . . not less than 3000 sheep. . . . Tomorrow I will continue the destruction." In letters home Sheridan’s troops described themselves as "barn burners" and "destroyers of homes." One soldier wrote home that he had personally set 60 private homes on fire and opined that "it was a hard looking sight to see the women and children turned out of doors at this season of the year." A Sergeant William T. Patterson wrote that "the whole country around is wrapped in flames, the heavens are aglow with the light thereof . . . such mourning, such lamentations, such crying and pleading for mercy [by defenseless women]... I never saw or want to see again." As horrific as the burning of the Shenandoah Valley was, Grimsley concluded that it was actually "one of the more controlled acts of destruction during the war’s final year." S. Congress (minus, of course, the seven seceded states of the Deep South) passed by a two-thirds majority a proposed amendment to the Constitution. Had it been ratified by the requisite number of states before the war intervened and signed by President Lincoln (who looked favourably on it as a way to lure the Southern states back into the Union), the proposed 13th Amendment would have prohibited the U. S. government from ever abolishing or interfering with slavery in any state. With slavery not being their reason for leaving the Union, the Southern States were not interested in returning and paying unfair tariffs that were being spent almost exclusive on Northern infrastructure. "If the South had only wanted to protect slavery, all they had to do was go along with the ORIGINAL 13th Amendment, offered in early 1861 after several states had seceded, which would have protected slavery for all time in the states where it then existed. This was not inducement enough to bring South Carolina or any others back into the fold. The States of the Confederacy, even today, could block the passage of the 13th Amendment, and certainly could have then. This is exactly why the Slaveholders wanted to stay in the Union.. DiLorenzo Legal scholar Gene Healy has made a powerful argument in favor of abolishing the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. When a fair vote was taken on it in 1865, in the aftermath of the War for Southern Independence, it was rejected by the Southern states and all the border states. Failing to secure the necessary three-fourths of the states, the Republican party, which controlled Congress, passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867 which placed the entire South under military rule. The purpose of this, according to one Republican congressman, was to coerce Southern legislators to vote for the amendment at the point of a bayonet. President Andrew Johnson called this tactic absolute despotism, the likes of which had not been exercised by any British monarch for more than 500 years. For his outspokenness Johnson was impeached by the Republican Congress. The South eventually voted to ratify the amendment, after which two Northern states Ohio and New Jersey withdrew support because of their disgust with Republican party tyranny. The Republicans just ignored this and declared the amendment valid despite their failure to secure the constitutionally-required three-fourths majority. The Cato Institute s Roger Pilon, who is a supporter of the Fourteenth Amendment, has defended the way in which the amendment was adopted on the grounds that after the war some Southern states had enacted the notorious Black Codes (Liberty Magazine, Feb. 2000). What should Congress have done, Pilon asked, turn a blind eye to what was going on? The notion that a racially-enlightened and benevolent Republican Congress unconstitutionally imposed the Fourteenth Amendment on the nation because it was motivated primarily (if not solely) out of concern with racial discrimination in the South is childishly naive and ahistorical. The fact is, Northern states pioneered viciously discriminatory black codes long before they existed in any Southern state, and these codes were supported by many of the same Northern politicians who voted for the Fourteenth Amendment. The Revised Code of Indiana stated in 1862 that Negroes and mulattos are not allowed to come into the state ; forbade the consummation of legal contracts with Negroes and mulattos ; imposed a $500 fine on anyone who employed a black person; forbade interracial marriage; and forbade blacks from testifying in court against white persons. Illinois the land of Lincoln added almost identical restrictions in 1848, as did Oregon in 1857. Most Northern states in the 1860s did not permit immigration by blacks or, if they did, required them to post a $1,000 bond that would be confiscated if they behaved improperly. Senator Lyman Trimball of Illinois, a close confidant of Lincoln s, stated that our people want nothing to do with the Negro and was a strong supporter of Illinois black codes. Northern newspapers were often just as racist as the Northern black codes were. The Philadelphia Daily News editorialized on November 22, 1860, that the African is naturally the inferior race. The Daily Chicago Times wrote on December 7, 1860, that nothing but evil has come from the idea of Abolition and urged everyone to return any escaped slave to his master where he belongs. On January 22, 1861, the New York Times announced that slavery would indeed be a very tolerable system if only slaves were allowed to legally marry, be taught to read, and to invest their savings. In short, the cartoonish notion that the Republican party was so incensed over racial discrimination in the South after the war that, in a fit of moral outrage, it trashed all constitutional precepts to dictatorially adopt the Fourteenth Amendment, should not be taken seriously. As Alexis de Tocqueville wrote in Democracy in America, it was obvious to all that racial prejudice was stronger in the North than it was in the South. How many were taught that the South was the first victim of the Empire? The South recieved the very same treatment as post war Germany after WWII except for the fact that Germany was rebuilt.
