When an owner pats their dog on the head and coos 'Who's a clever boy?', they might not be so far from the truth. Scientists have found that our canine friends are intensely jealous creatures prone to a raft of complex emotions.

Just like us, they can feel the unpleasant pang of jealously, as well as pride, envy and embarrassment.

In particular, dogs hate to see their owners offering affection to other dogs and can suffer badly when a new boyfriend or girlfriend is brought home. dogs

Dogs are susceptible to sausage envy, scientists have demonstrated. In this sequence the black and white dog did not receive food for giving their paw in a trial. After observing that the partner did receive food, the subject refuses to give their paw again and avoids looking at the experimenter

Dr Paul Morris, a psychologist at the University of Portsmouth said the emotions stemmed from a fear of being displaced.

'We are learning that dogs, horses, and perhaps many other species are far more emotionally complex than we ever realised.

'They can suffer simple forms of many emotions we once thought only primates could experience,' he told the Times.

Dr Morris found that in almost all cases of jealous behaviour, the dog tried to rpise their owner away from a new lover in the early days of a relationship.

Until recently, it was believed that most animals only experienced primary emotions such as anger, anxiety and surprise.

But the new research suggests that dogs and some other animals can experience so-called secondary emotions such as embarrassment, jealousy, empathy or guilt.

The dog study is the latest into several species, including cows, horses, cats and sheep, which have shown that animals are far more self-aware than previously realised.

In another recent study, Dr Friederike Range, of the University of Vienna’s neurobiology department, said dogs felt jealous when unfairly treated compared with other dogs.

Dr Range, who's results will be published tomorrow, said: 'Dogs show a strong aversion to inequity'.

No shit? It took a bunch of scientists to figure this out? LMAO!

I shall not vote for evil, lesser or otherwise.
