Americans used to roar like lions for liberty. Now they bleat like sheep for security 5 pounds? Thats pretty heavy. That must mean it works great... And they name it Nitro? That's impressive. Im neither esso or hounddog, but yikes! $800 for that? A capacitor? A lousy stinkin capacitor? You gotta be kidding me. I can pretty much guarantee there is nothing in there worth 800.00 Not even close. This just screams ripoff. .

It's a capacitor? I can't imagine how it would save any electricity at all. I can imagine it giving you a hell of a shock if something went wrong.

Not for you, but maybe for the power company. It might correct the power factor if it's sized properly and reduce the apparent Wattage being used by you, but your electric meter measures actual Wattage which is lower. For example: A 100 Watt equivalent CFL bulb draws 23 Watts, but the apparent Wattage is about 45 Watts. Your electric meter bills you for the 23 Watts. Usually, if the power factor is out of whack on a circuit, the electric company will install capacitors on a pole to correct it to save them money. Edit: The only time you have to worry about power factor is when you generate your own power with a generator or UPS. Most UPSs are rated in apparent power or VA (volts x amps).

The product in question seems to be an implementation of a device which was written about by John A. Kuecken in his book "Alternative Energy Products for the 1990's" which was published in 1991. In order for the device to efficiently perform Power Factor Correction over a range of conditions it would be microprocessor controlled, contain a phase detector to monitor reactive current on the line, and a sophisticated switching arrangement to place capacitance across the line incrementally in order to cancel load current phase shifting by inductive loads/appliances. Because home watt-hour meters respond only to the Apparent Power vector, rather than the True Power vector; by Power Factor correction it is possible to eliminate the Reactive Current component which causes the meter to sense more power (Apparent) than is actually (True) being used by motor driven appliances. They do indeed work and will reduce the power consumption of the average homes' number one load, the refrigerator/s. If you use a lot of motor driven tools in your home, in addition to your refrigerator, then you could potentially save a considerable amount on your electrical bills. Money back guarantees are always nice.
This sounds hokey to me, but I don't know. I do know that efficientattic.com and their radiant barrier deck paint helped reduce our Austin Energy electricity bill down to $47 last month. They're having a year-end sale with everything they offer seventy-five percent off.
That's not correct. I could never get an answer from the electric company as to exactly what their meters measured, so I bought some reconditioned & calibrated mechanical electric meters to test. I used my electronic Wattmeter (which measures W, VA, PF, RMS V, kWh) to check the meters with a known resistive load to check meter calibration. I then tested the meters with various inductive devices and in every case the electric meters registered the true power, not the apparent power. On a meter with a Kh of 7.2 you can determine Wattage by dividing 25920 by the number of seconds it takes the disc in the meter to rotate one time. I don't know what the new electronic meters are measuring, but the clockwork type electric meters measure true power.
Since all the providers are going digital, I imagine that we the customers will be getting hosed. Just my guess.

When they went through and replaced all the meters in my hood with the ones with the remote-read transmitters in them, they were the dial-type. In Mom's hood, they used electronic. I started looking into electric meters when I saw the huge difference in wattage and apparent wattage in CFL bulbs and wanted to find out how much they actually saved. I&M (AEP) really stonewalled me & wouldn't give me any info outside of kilowatt hours. There's surprisingly little info on the internet about the actual workings of electric meters. Wikipedia had about the most info but I don't think it answered the question I was looking for. That's when I went to eBay and found out there's a huge surplus of electric meters available on the cheap. After I got done testing them, I put one on the sub-panel in my shop so I can see how much power I'm using out there, and I put one on the output of my grid-tie inverter so I could monitor it. The claims on the CFL light bulb boxes about savings are true, at least with the old-style electric meters. A 23 Watt bulb measures 23 watts on the meter even though the apparent wattage is about 45 watts.
They're good guys - the local mananger came out to inspect the spray, didn't like it, and sent another crew out to re-do the job. With the city and TX Gas rebates our net cost was around fifteen hundred.
Encouraging information. But their life-span claims are pure hoke-um. Now, I save the receipts and the packaging and return the dopey things for free replacements...and the business about having to call the fire department here for 'proper' disposal - please.
Looking back, it make sense. If they tell you a device uses x number of watts and it actually uses twice that amount, there could be lawsuits, etc.
I'm just glad that there are members like you who understand the physics involved, and can check this stuff out for the rest of us here who haven't a clue, except how to read the bill and write the check.
You sound like you know a lot about power co. metering. Can you tell me, is there any truth to the rumor that on a 3 phase service, they only meter one phase and multiply that reading by 3 to arrive at the usage?
I shall not vote for evil, lesser or otherwise. I'm not sure, but I seriously doubt it. It seems like that'd be awful easy to spoof the meter.
Con Ed in NYC hired lots of retired cops to investigate theft of service. If your bill suddenly drops by 50% lots of red flags are going to go off. They have the ability to zero in and detect all these gadgets, so the only winner here will be the person who sells them. The homeowner will be arrested, and the court costs, etc will far outweigh the attempted benefit.

If you are paying for what you use it can't be theft. They'll find a way to make it that though.
In days gone by a copper penny well positioned in the meter box would slow down the meter. So in effect you are stealing service in that the meter is being tamped down by artificial means. That's all this gadget is.
It wouldn't be, because it wouldn't affect your meter reading. About the only way to affect your meter reading is to mechanically tamper with the meter. The meter box has a serial numbered tamper tag on it as does the meter itself which just plugs into the meter box. As long as you're not taking power before it gets to the meter you're OK.
Actually, there's a good possibility that that box may draw current rather than reduce it. I'd have to see one, but trust me, it won't reduce your consumption.
Esso, some Con Ed guys in NY had wonderful off the books business all geared on stealing service. They have seals, and countless ways of slowing the meter down. Some specialized in commercial establishments and some residential. I'm sure it's still going on, but to a far less degree thanks to the sophistication of the boxes.
With access to the seals, TOS would be a piece of cake.
The only way to assure that your observations are truly the case is to monitor 'power' consumption with a pure capacitive load, and again with a pure inductive load. Should the aluminum disc rotate only very, very slowly (essentially non-responsive) with a substantial purely reactive current (very low Power Factor), then your electro-mechanical meter would be capable of registering 'true power.' Your test results are very interesting and we all appreciate your providing your determinations.

IIRC, refrigerator manufacturers incorporated this circuitry into all their models years ago to comply with the newly passed efficiency standards of the day. Long story short, save the $800 and go buy a new fridge.
