Duisburg. German authorities have searched the residence of an 89-year-old former member of the Nazis paramilitary SS after his identity was exposed by a Vienna university stu- dent. The man, identified only as Adolf S., is suspected of being one of three SS men who massacred some 60 Hungarian-Jewish slave labourers in March 1945 in the Burgenland village of Deutsch Schützen.
The remains of the victims of the Deutsch Schützen massacre were found in 1995 in a mass grave by the Austrian Jewish association. A plaque now marks the site.
No statement
Police in North Rhine-Westphalia said the man invoked his right not to make a statement to them during Tuesdays raid in the city of Duisburg.
In October, political science student Andreas Forster from Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Lower Austria, tracked him down as part of his final year thesis.
Back then, Forsters lecturer Walter Manoschek confronted the former Nazi at his home and recorded several hours of an inter- view in which the man at first admitted the crimes but then withdrew his confession.
Plans for documentary
Manoschek and Forster have said they will use footage of the interview in a documentary film for which they are currently holding talks with producers who signalled interest in realising the project.
