The Building Race acts to Pattern The Covenant Nations Act to Pattern In the Siege of Civilization Michael A. Clark [actual date of publication not known] A Change of Times is now Evident During the past few weeks the world has witnessed a military action lead by the United States and Great Britain to liberate Iraq from a savage and brutal dictatorship. Students of the Kingdom Identity, understanding that the Servant People were to be the defender rather that the aggressor, may have wondered about the wisdom of the Coalition forces initiating the action. This article sets out a pattern of events as being evidence of a Divine overruling in this conflict, which may have begun the final separation of the Israel of God from the systems of mystical Babylon. EVER since 19th March, 1994, when the Covenant Nations began their "Exodus," or separation from bondage under man made systems - defined as "The Field of Mixed Seed," - there has been a countdown taking place to when the change of times becomes evident. On 11th September, 2001 the terrorist attack on the United States made certain that this change would begin to be implemented at an early date -- that date was 19th-20th March, 2003 when the military action for the liberation of Iraq began. It came 9 years exactly, the judgment number, from the separation point for the Servant People from the Gentile systems that have been under final judgment since 1936. The time measures between 19th March, 1994 and the 11th September, 2001 attack on the World Trade Centre (WTC) in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, was 4 x 666 (solar) days plus 29 days. This measure has the meaning of the world (4) linked to the number of gold and the Beast system (666), with the expectancy of judgment (29). Clearly 9/11 was an event of considerable prophetic import, yet in truth it could only be fully understood within the context of the Kingdom Identity. The Covenant Nations in bondage to the political, financial and religious systems of mystical Babylon, were being given a signal that their time of release and separation from man-made systems was approaching. The Apocalyptic warning signal of future judgment upon the systems of mystical Babylon became clear that fateful day. Revelation 18 reveals judgment would come in "one hour" and the merchants and traders in their ships would be unable to approach the scene of devastation. The symbol was uniquely demonstrated in a literal, but very terrible way, to become a far more profound fulfilment of the Apocalyptic warning than could have been imagined before the event. After the twin towers of the WTC fell, within one literal hour, with the New York waterfront fulfilling the scene of shipping being unable to approach the "great city," the New York stock market was closed until reopening on the significant day of Monday 17th September, 2001. The actual battleline date for the initiation of the war on terrorism was 16th-17th September, 2001, being 1600 days, the number of Divine judgment given in Revelation 14:20, from the beginning of Tony Blair's premiership on 1st-2nd May, 1997. The Times, London, for 17th September, 2001, said "The countdown towards America's fight-back against terror begins today." Strange to say the address of the White House in Washington is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. On Sunday evening 16th September, 2001, Tony Blair emerged from 10 Downing Street to stand before the microphones and state "We are at war with terrorism." This quotation in fact formed the main headline on The Times, London, on 17th September, 2001, being the Feast of Trumpets that year. [17th-22nd September, 2001, was a defining point in time seen by David Davidson and Bernard Nicklin some 60 or 70 years previously in their studies of the structural symbolism of The Great Pyramid's Divine Message and of Divine Time Measures in day-period chronology; as was the date of 19th March, 1994, and the "Exodus" from "The Field of Mixed Seed."] In the Daily Mail, London, 22nd March, 2003, the journalist Simon Heffer wrote the following about the conflict over Iraq and the significance of events subsequent to 9/11: "Directly after the September 11th attacks on America, I wrote here that the world had changed irrevocably. What struck me then was that, after decades of drift, Western civilization had realised it faced a fundamental threat -- and was prepared to deal with it." Both the United States and Great Britain, as the leading Covenant Nations in prestige and power today, have accepted the fact that they are facing an internal threat to their civilization, a threat which is spoken of in Deuteronomy 32:25 as being "The sword without and the terror within." In fact, during the days before and since the war of liberation of Iraq, we have witnessed mass demonstrations across the world, which have seemed to be driven by spirits possessed of another agenda. Most certainly the people have been encouraged and organized by anti-globalization groups which in effect gathered the peoples' "armies" against the body politic of the leading Covenant Nations. The words "Blaming America" were on the cover of Time magazine for 20th January, 2003, reminding us that "all [Gentile] nations" are to be gathered against the civilization, or foundation of peace, being the very meaning of the name "Jerusalem" (Zechariah 14:2). Whatever grand strategy may be directing the United States to take offensive action over Iraq, seen from the vantage point of the Kingdom Identity, and especially when observing the chronological pattern, we need to pause before making an outright condemnation of the liberation of Iraq that has taken place. The United States, with its Abraham tanks, was fighting in the land of Ur of the Chaldees from where Abraham was given a national destiny by the Lord to rule as a great nation in the Earth (Genesis 12 & 13). This would be accomplished by military as well as spiritual and political power, to uphold right ways, or righteousness. A greater strategy, that of a Divine overruling, appears to be confirmed at this time. Dated from 11th September, 2001, it was precisely 555 days (15 x 37 = one "hour" /The Word) to 20th March, 2003, when the military action began against Iraq. Just 21 days (3 x 7) days later, on 9th April, 2003, Baghdad fell (the same number of days to the day for the fall of France in 1940). Remarkably, we find that between 11th September, 2001 and 9th April, 2003, there were exactly 4 x 144 days, significant of the world and the Divine Order of government. Baghdad is very near the site of ancient Babylon, while Mosul in the north is near the ancient site of Nineveh. As if to symbolise the approaching passing away of the mystical Babylonish order of things in the world today, the mobs roaming the city looted or destroyed several thousand items from the National Museum in Baghdad. These were the treasures from the cradle of ancient civilization, the site of the fabled cities of Ur, Babylon and Nineveh. With respect to the political opposition experienced by the Coalition forces from other nations, it was France and Turkey that stood in the path of the liberation of Iraq. Their family traits are revealing in this respect. France was seeking to offset the leadership of the United States by asserting its Reuben roots as the first born son of Jacob, but only succeeded in demonstrating that their father Jacob was correct, when he declared of Reuben, that he was as "unstable as water." Then again, in the twin brother line of Esau and Jacob, it was Turkey acting to form, as descendent of Esau-Edom, who refused passage to United States forces to enter Iraq, making them take a long detour by sea to enter Iraq from the south. When Israel sought permission to pass through Edom to the Promised Land, we recall that Edom refused (Numbers 20:14-22), making them take a long detour and cross over the River Jordan. The task of winning the peace will no doubt prove to be more difficult for the Covenant Nations than winning the war. Nevertheless, in the wider destiny, what we are seeing in Iraq is regime change, which could affect the Middle East in general, including Palestine and Jewish-Israel in the Israeli State. We note that 6th August, 2003, will be 80 years, or two periods of 40 years of trial, from 6th August, 1923, when Iraq was entrusted to Britain as a mandate. On 14th May 1998, we passed a Jubilee period of 50 years from when the control of Britain's Mandate in Palestine passed to the Jews, who set up the misnamed State of Israel . Since 1998 there has passed 4 years, 3 years allowed by Jesus for the barren fig tree to bear fruit, plus 1 further dung year after which the tree was to be cut down (Luke 13:6-9). When the Hebrew Jubilee period of 50 years is reached, the law requires that land be returned to the original owner. Are we now seeing true Israel, represented by Ephraim-Britain and Manasseh-America, in the process of regaining a mandate for the Middle East, perhaps even including Palestine? We could be witness to the beginning of a Divine initiative for the Middle East and Palestine, which eventually will involve a great upheaval in what, until now, has been considered by the Jewish-Israel school of prophecy, as being the return of Israel to Palestine. We should also note that 6th August, 2003, pointed to above, marks 2 x 29 years, a double period of expectancy of judgment, from 6th August, 1945, when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. Six days later, on 12th August, 2003, Prime Minister Tony Blair will be 120 x 153 days -- a period of warning linked to the Elect -- from his birth on 6th May, 1953. This time measure is more significantly linked to the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June, 1953, as it was the 153rd day of the 153rd year of the United Kingdom. The measure of 120 x 153 days from that great spiritual event for the Covenant Nations, will expire on 8th September, 2003. In connection with nuclear events, we should take cognizance of the 50-year period in August this year from when (Soviet) Russia exploded its first H-bomb on 12th August, 1953. It was announced by Russia on 20th August, 1953 (a significant date in the structural symbolism of The Great Pyramid) -- a moment which was described in the press as "History's turning point -- the greatest yet!" The date of 20th August, 2003, will be a Jubilee period from that turning point in history! With regard to the terminal date of 11th-12th August, 2003, linked to the British Prime Minister, which we have referred to above, we shall at that point be 4 years, the world number, from the total eclipse of the sun on 11th August, 1999, over Britain and Europe. This event was described in page 230 of our July-September, 1999, issue of Wake Up! in the following terms: "A shadow of darkness swept across the North Atlantic from Canada's east coast near Nova Scotia. At 65 miles wide and travelling at approximately 1630 mph it crossed the Cornish coast and St Michael's Mount at 11.11 am on the 11th August, 1999. From there it moved rapidly to the European Continent, passing over Strasbourg and the European parliament building and on to its peak over Romania, at 70 miles wide, finishing its track at sunset in Pakistan and the state of Gujarat in India. "Of immediate significance is the fact that St Michael's Mount in Cornwall was in the path of totality as the shadow passed over south-west England. The defender of Israel is the Archangel Michael, confirmed by Daniel 12:1, and it is this Scripture which pinpoints the Age-end period of trouble and deliverance of the servant people, or 'every one that shall be found written in the book.' " The number 11, which marks disorder, featured at the total eclipse of the sun, which is symbolic of the Throne and rule of the Lord upon Earth (Psalm 89:36). Precisely 5 x 5 months later on 11th September, 2001, the number 11 was supremely dominant in the terror attacks on the United States. There is an immense siege of civilization in the Earth at this time. Disorder is on all sides, but the Covenant Nations are acting to an overruling pattern of Divine Order. Articles 1. The Global Financial Crisis Founded in 1919 • Registered Charity No. 208079 Llyndon LaRouche published a document in May or June of 2001 stating that George Bush was going to use terrorism to bring in the New World Order. On a prophecy site, which I have never seen again, it said the attacks would probably occur either on September 4 or September 17, which were connected to Jewish "holy" days. Even the anti-Semites, like Patrick J. Buchanan and Congressman Jim Moran know it. Pat Buchanan has been accusing the neo-conservatives, what he calls the War Party - i.e., the Jews and their followers in America - of pushing the United States into this war. He's also blamed Prime Minister Sharon and Israel for wanting the war. That's what he said in a recent article, "Whose War?" Rep. Moran recently came out of the closet saying, "If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this." Other anti-Semites have also been saying it. They're both right, and dead wrong. True, most Jews in America and Israel want the US to capture Saddam Hussein and his gang, disarm Iraq of Weapons of Mass Destruction, institute some form of regime change, and introduce freedom and democracy. But so do most Americans, many Iraqis, and many other freedom-loving people in the region and around the world. Although it might be in Israel's interest to see the 'neighborhood bully' - Iraq - have its non-conventional weapons confiscated, it is also in America's interest, it is also in Europe's interest, it is even in Russia's and China's interest - they have both been plagued by Islamic terror in recent years. And, though they might not like to admit it publicly, it is even in the interest of Arab states in the region. Nobody who thinks about it for a couple of seconds should want a dictator like Saddam Hussein - who has already used chemical weapons on his own citizens, the Kurds, and his neighbors, the Iranians - to have Weapons of Mass Destruction. Whether he uses them himself or passes them off to terror groups like al-Qaida, Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines, the Chechens, or Hamas and Islamic Jihad, who wants some nut cases releasing Small Pox, Anthrax, or VX Nerve Gas onto innocent civilian populations? However, we already knew that this war is for us - i.e., the Jews and Israel. Chazal - our sages - throughout the ages have explained the Torah, telling us that everything that happens in the world is for the benefit of the Jewish People. Simply put another way, if all the world is a stage, then the Jews - and especially those in the Land of Israel - are the lead actors on the stage of history, and the goyim - the nations, i.e. the gentiles - have supporting roles, while the evil-doers are props and background scenery. As our tradition states, G-D - the great playwright - created the world for the sake of the Jewish People, and it is our responsibility to implement the Torah - absolute morality and the blueprint of creation - in it. Stop and think for a moment: the last Gulf War in 1991 ended erev - just before - Purim. This Gulf War began motzei - just after - Shushan Purim. Get the picture? In between, "The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honor." (Book of Esther 8:16) Read the Purim story in Megilat Esther again, it is a rags to riches story on a national scale. Haman, the proto-typical anti-Semite, plans mass murder of the Jews and in the end pays with his life, the life of his ten sons - all hanged - and the Jews kill 75, 800 members of the anti-Semitic - i.e. Nazi - party of the time. This is not so different from the Nuremberg Trials after World War II, when 23 Nazi war criminals were tried. Originally 11 were to have the death penalty imposed if found guilty. Everybody in those days thought that they would be shot - as is customary in military executions - or get the electric chair - as was common in the United States. But when the judges announced the verdict of guilty, they also said that hanging would be the method of execution. Two hours before the execution, they found Hermann Goering dead in his cell. He had committed suicide. That left only 10 Nazis to execute. There is more to this story than meets the eye. In Megilat Esther (9:7-9), when it describes the execution of Haman's ten sons, their names are listed in a vertical column. If you look at the Hebrew closely, you'll notice extra-small letters in three of the names. The first name, Parshandata, has a small tav. The seventh name, Parmashta, has a small shin. The tenth name, Vayzata, has a small zayn. Hebrew letters are also used as numbers, as well as for dates in the Jewish calendar. Tav, shin, zayn numerically means 707, corresponding to the year 5707, which began with Rosh HaShanah - the Jewish New Year - on September 25, 1946. On October 16, 1946, as foreshadowed in the names of Haman's ten sons, ten Nazi leaders were hanged as war criminals. And if that doesn't impress you, out of nowhere, with the rope around his neck, Julius Schtreicher - editor of Der Sturmer, the Nazi propaganda newspaper - shouted out with flaming hatred in his eyes, just as the trap door opened, "Purimfest 1946!" It was reported in the international press of the day. As I said earlier, of course this war is for the Jews and Israel, and instead of hiding from the accusation, or crying, "anti-Semitic slur", we should gratefully acknowledge what the Master of the Universe is doing to our enemies for us. Saddam Hussein, Yasser Arafat, Bashar Assad, Osama Bin-Laden, and the other dictators, terrorists and mullahs of the region, are the modern day Hamans and Hitlers. Great things are yet to come. The Hebrew month of Adar is a time for 'increasing joy'. Purim is a time for celebrating our salvation from enemies who plot our destruction. Adar falls at the end of the calendar for months and the end of the winter. And after Adar comes Nisan - or Aviv, meaning springtime. Springtime is a time of rebirth and regeneration after a long dark winter. Pesach - Passover - Z'man Cherutainu - the time of our freedom - falls in Nisan. In Nisan, we were redeemed from slavery in Egypt, and the future redemption will be in Nisan. Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak HaCohen Kook taught that we were liberated from Egyptian bondage in order to bring liberation to the entire world. The Torah repeats three times that we departed Egypt in the springtime (Exodus 13:4, 26:15, and Deuteronomy 16:1), because our freedom is not only the spring of our people, but also the spring of the entire world and its inhabitants. The objective of our liberation is to perfect the world under the reign of the Almighty, as G-d promised Abraham, "and through you all the families of the earth will be blessed." (Genesis 12:3) Yes, the war is for the Jews. But it is also for all decent, peace-loving and freedom-loving people. Just as when the Jews were saved from Egyptian slavery, liberated, given the Torah at Mt. Sinai, and brought into the Holy Land, the world now has a great opportunity to rid itself of the Hamans, Hitlers, and Pharaohs who want to kill or enslave them today. In the Purim story, Mordechai told Queen Esther, when she seemed apprehensive about approaching the king to ask for help to avert Haman's plan of genocide, "If you remain silent at this time, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from elsewhere, but you and your father's house will perish." (Book of Esther 4:14) That is what we should tell the Pat Buchanans, the Jim Morans, and all those in America and around the world who say that the Jews are behind America's war in Iraq. That is what we should tell all those in the ‘Anti-War Movement’ who are against America. Pat Buchanan really is Anti-American, though he hides it well. Who could imagine an isolationist America, disengaged from the world, as he advocates? Terrorists and terrorist states would multiply. It would end up bringing more tragedies like September 11th to America. Rather than blame America's support for Israel for September 11th, as he and Jihadist Muslims have done, Israel, America, and their allies will lessen the threat of mass murder, through war on Iraq, on other terror-regimes, and on terrorist groups. Great things are coming, for the Jewish People, for the State of Israel, for America, for the Western democratic world, and for all those who aspire to be like them. THE serious prospect of an approaching battle between the Israeli State and Iran over the development by Iran of their nuclear programme has been making headlines recently in our media. Pentagon chiefs and American commanders fear that Israeli plans for an attack will fail due to the lack of intelligence on the location of Iran’s nuclear bases. There is a short window of opportunity before Iran will have nuclear weapons in place and President Bush would like to see the matter settled before his term of office ends next January. How do we evaluate the pattern of possible approaching events? Students of Divine Time Measures should take note of the parallel time pattern in 2008 from the Suez Crisis of 52 years ago in 1956. The period in late 2008 will fall 4 x 13 years, or 4 x 12 x 390 solar days – significant of world trouble in government for the Ten Tribes – from the Suez debacle at the latter end 1956, when the United States prevented British and French troops from continuing their military action in Egypt. The number 13 is the numerical factor most prominent in United States affairs, linked as it is to Manasseh, the thirteenth tribe of Israel. The critical date pattern commences July 26 when, in 1956, the Egyptian leader seized the Suez Canal. Prime Minister Eden of Britain feared another Hitler in Egypt’s military dictator Gamal Abdul Nasser, and the strategic consequences of being held to ransom over oil supplies. A military plan was drawn up by Britain and France, in collusion with the Israeli State, in which the Israelis would strike first to be followed by British and French intervention to stop the fighting, so taking back control of the Suez Canal. We then move to October 29, the anniversary of when the Israelis invaded Egypt across the Sinai desert. October 31 through to November 5 covers the period of direct military action by Britain and France when Egyptian airfields were bombed and troop landings took place at Port Said. In 2008, this period will cover the immediate lead-up to the U.S. presidential election which takes place on November 4. There will then be a period until Inauguration Day on January 20, 2009, when the U.S. presidential office will be in a state of transition – which might be considered an ideal time by the Israelis to make a strike against Iran. Any attack is seen as having to be launched within a year if Iran is to be prevented from securing nuclear weapons. However, reports say that despite a growing sense of urgency, neither the CIA nor the Israeli intelligence, Mossad, knows the site of every nuclear base in Iran. It is a vast country with many facilities which are hidden deep underground. During the first week of June the Israelis conducted a long-range air exercise involving 100 aircraft which was seen as preparation for a possible attack on Iran. In defiance, Iran is conducting missile tests and threatening retaliation on the Israeli State if they are attacked. The head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, General Ali Jafari, has warned that any attack on Iran would be “regarded as the beginning of war.” In 1956 President Eisenhower, who had been kept out of the loop, refused U.S. support for the military action taken by Britain and France. He arranged for a United Nations resolution calling for their immediate withdrawal and used American financial power to pressurize them into complying. This pressure combined with an Arab oil embargo put Britain under immense strain and the British government under Prime Minister Eden capitulated. A United Nations force arrived in the region on November 15, and Anglo-French forces made a humiliating withdrawal on December 22 of that year. We should also note that on August 4, 2008, the U.S. presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama will be 47 years old, or 60 displacements,* from his birth on August 4 1961. This date in itself was 47 years, or 60 displacements, from Britain’s entry into World War I on August 4-5, 1914, making 120 displacements in total – 120 being the number of warning. There is the added significance in this context of the terminal August 6-9, 2008, which is 9 x 7 years, or 9 x 2520 solar days from the first use of atomic weapons in anger at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Any action taken against Iran will be aimed at destroying their nuclear enrichment programme that could be used to build a nuclear bomb. Another key historical component in the current developing crisis over Iran is a result of what happened three years before the Suez Crisis. On August 19-20, 1953,** the same day that the first successful USSR H bomb test (of August 12) was announced, the CIA, with British MI6 collusion, was ordered by President Eisenhower to topple the Mossadeq government in Iran. Mossadeq’s nationalization of foreign oil holdings threatened the effectiveness of U.S. foreign policy. Eisenhower saw covert CIA operations as an easy way to win Cold War victories. As a result, the Shah of Iran was restored to power and operated as an agent of western influences. The Iranian revolution of 1979 was partly a matter of settling scores against the Shah’s military and secret police. The U.S. action against Iran under President Eisenhower, was, like that over Suez three years later, ill-judged in light of what happened in the long term. It was influenced by factors which revolved ultimately around oil and the growing presence in Palestine of the Jewish Israeli State, which in 1948 inadvisably took the name of Israel, despite being of Ashkenazi-Esau descent, which is the key to understanding the cause of the continuous conflict that has been experienced between Israel and the Arab countries over the past 60 years. The simple fact is that the Jewish Israeli State, by wrongly covering itself with the identity of Jacob-Israel in 1948, adopted the tribulations of the name, rather than the blessings, and in the process has been forced into developing a Masada-type complex – following the pattern of the 953 Jews in their rock fortress, who in AD 73 after becoming subject to the Romans following a year-long siege, committed mass-suicide rather than be conquered and enslaved by the Romans. If the analogy of the final stand of the Jews at Masada is followed to the end, the Israeli State could initiate a conflict of self-destruction over something like Iran’s nuclear threat – which threat may by symbolic of the giant ramp that the Romans constructed to enter the 1,300ft high fortress on the western shore of the Dead Sea. The site itself was excavated in 1963-65 and is now an Israeli national monument. The British, French and Israeli military collusion over the seizure by Egypt of the Suez Canal has been viewed since as a foreign policy disaster. In the full circle of events now emerging, it is the United States which is now facing the task of taking on the consequences of its policy at that time. It does appear now that the terminal pattern of events, 4 x 13 years after the Suez Crisis, could at this time return upon the United States in the form of becoming involved or initiating military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, either directly or through Israeli action. Having used financial leverage to stop the military action of Britain and France in 1956, the supreme irony is that the U.S. could now be drawn into a much wider conflict in 2008. A final interesting chronological pattern concerns Senator John McCain, the nominated Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency. It is interesting that he was born on August 29, 1936 and reached 13 years of age on August 29, 1949, the very day Russia exploded its first A bomb. The number 13 being so significant for the United States, in this context, appears to mark him out for an undoubtedly tense international period ahead. He will be 72, or 6 x 12 years old on August 29, 2008, a multiple of the government factor (12), while a further 144 days (12 x 12) will bring him to Inauguration Day on January 20, 2009. A strong indication, perhaps, that he will become the 44th United States president – the number four being the world number. In verse one we read of the last blessing that Jacob bestowed to his sons. "And Jacob called his sons and said, 'Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days'" Genesis 49:1 (NKJ) When he had gathered them together he began to prophesy over each of them. When he got to his son Judah, he gave a prophecy concerning the Messiah: "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to him shall be the obedience of the people." The word "scepter" has been understood by the Rabbis to mean the "tribal staff" or "tribal identity" of the twelve tribes of Israel. This "tribal identity" was linked, in the minds of the Jews, to their right to apply and enforce Mosaic law upon the people, including the right to adjudicate capital cases and administer capital punishment, or jus gladii (The jus gladii is a legal term which refers to the legal authority to adjudicate capital cases and impose capital punishment.) Secondly, it is well documented that the word "Shiloh" has been understood for millennia to be an idiom for the Messiah. Therefore, according to this prophecy, the tribal identity or scepter of the tribe of Judah would not cease until the Messiah came. Judah was not only the name of the son of Jacob, but it was also the name of the southern kingdom of the divided nation of Israel. With these definitions in place we can restate the prophecy as follows: "The [National identity of Judah, which includes the right to enforce Mosaic law, including the right to administer capital punishment upon the people, as called for in the Torah] shall not depart from [the southern kingdom (Judah) ], nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh [the Messiah] comes; and to him shall be the obedience of the people." This prophecy gives specific indicators regarding the time of the coming of the Messiah! The prophecy declares that he would come before the right to impose Jewish law (which includes capital punishment) is restricted and before the national identity of Judah is removed! During the 70-year Babylonian captivity, from 606-537 B.C., the southern kingdom of Israel, Judah, had lost it's national sovereignty, but retained it's tribal staff or national identity.2 It is very significant that in the book of Ezra we read that during the 70-year Babylonian captivity the Jews still retained their own lawgivers or judges.3 The Jews maintained their identity and judicial authority over their own people even during 70 years of slavery. The scepter had not been lost during the Babylonian captivity. During the next five centuries the Jews suffered under the yoke of the Medo-Persian, Greek and Roman Empires. Yet, Judah retained its tribal identity up until the first quarter of the first century A.D. In the first quarter of the first century A.D., the Jews were under Roman domination when an unprecedented event occurred. According to Josephus (Antiquities 17:13) around the year A.D. 6-7, the son and successor to King Herod, a man named Herod Archelaus, was dethroned and banished to Vienna, a city of Gaul.4 He was replaced, not by a Jewish king, but by a Roman Procurator named Caponius. The legal power of the Sanhedrin was then immediately restricted. With the ascension of Caponius, the Sanhedrin lost their ability to adjudicate capital cases. This was the normal policy toward all the nations under the yoke of the Romans. The province of Judea had, however, been spared from this policy up to this point. However, Caesar Agustus had had enough of the Jews and finally removed the judicial authority from them at the ascension of Caponius. This transfer of power was recorded by Josephus.5 "And now Archelaus' part of Judea was reduced into a province, and Caponius, one of the equestrian order of the Romans, was sent as a procurator, having the power of life and death put into his hands by Caesar!"(Emphasis added) The power of the Sanhedrin to adjudicate capital cases was immediately removed. In the minds of the Jewish leadership, this event signified the removal of the scepter or national identity of the tribe of Judah! If you think that this is a Christian contrivance, think again. Here are several ancient rabbinical references that indicate that the rabbis believed that Genesis 49:10 was referring to the Messiah. In the Targum Onkelos it states: "The transmission of domain shall not cease from the house of Judah, nor the scribe from his children's children, forever, until Messiah comes."6 In the Targum Pseudo-Jonathan it states: "King and rulers shall not cease from the house of Judah...until King Messiah comes"7 The Targum Yerushalmi states: "Kings shall not cease from the house of Judah...until the time of the coming of the King Messiah...to whom all the dominions of the earth shall become subservient"7 In the Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 98b, Rabbi Johanan said: "The world was created for the sake of the Messiah, what is this Messiah's name? The school of Rabbi Shila said 'his name is Shiloh, for it is written; until Shiloh come.'" These amazing commentaries should eliminate any doubt that the Jews that lived prior to the Christian era believed that one of the names of the Messiah was Shiloh. Furthermore, these quotes should eliminate all doubt that the ancient rabbis believed that the Messiah would come before the removal of the scepter from Judah! Woe Unto Us, For Messiah Has Not Appeared! So far we have established that Shiloh is an idiom for the Messiah and that the scepter (that is, the tribal identity, associated with the right to impose capital punishment) had departed from the kingdom of Judah early in the first quarter of the first century. What was the reaction of the Jews when the right to adjudicate capital cases (the jus gladii) was removed from Judah? Did they view the removal of their authority on capital cases as the removal of the scepter from Judah? The answer can be categorically stated as YES! When Archelaus was banished, the power of the Sanhedrin was severely curtailed. Capital cases could no longer be tried by the Sanhedrin. Such cases were now transferred to the Roman Procurator, Caponius. This transfer of power is even mentioned in the Talmud: "A little more than forty years before the destruction of the Temple, the power of pronouncing capital sentences was taken away from the Jews."8 This certainly corresponds to the same event recorded by Josephus we saw earlier. In Antiquities 20:9 Josephus again points out that the Sanhedrin had no authority over capital cases: "After the death of the procurator Festus, when Albinus was about to succeed him , the high priest Ananias considered it a favorable opportunity to assembly the Sanhedrin. He therefore caused James the Brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, and several others, to appear before this hastily assembled council, and pronounced upon them the sentence of death by stoning. All the wise men and strict observers of the law who were at Jerusalem expressed their disapprobation of this act...Some even went to Albinus himself , who had departed to Alexandria, to bring this breach of the law under his observation, and to inform him that Ananius had acted illegally in assembling the Sanhedrin without the Roman authority." This remarkable passage not only mentions Jesus of Nazareth and his brother James as historical figures, but it also declares that the Sanhedrin had no authority to pass the death sentence upon any man!` The jus gladii, the right to impose the death sentence, had been removed. The remaining authority of Judah had been taken away by the Romans in the early years of the first century. The scepter had departed from Judah. Its royal and legal powers were removed; but where was Shiloh? The reaction of the Jews to these monumental events is recorded in the Talmud. Augustin Lemann, in his book Jesue before the Sanhedrin, records a statement by Rabbi Rachmon: "When the members of the Sanhedrin found themselves deprived of their right over life and death, a general consternation took possession of them: they covered their heads with ashes, and their bodies with sackcloth, exclaiming: 'Woe unto us for the scepter has departed from Judah and the Messiah has not come'"9,10,11 (emphasis added) The scepter was smitten from the hands of the tribe of Judah. The kingdom of Judea, the last remnant of the greatness of Israel, was debased into being merely a part of the province of Syria.
