Don't call whites racists, says British official

Hazel Blears, the British government's Minister of Funny Walks, excuse me, Communities Secretary, says that white working class people must be allowed to speak their mind on immigration without fear of being branded racist. However, the real meaning of Blears's comments is the exact opposite of what people will think. First, here is most of The Telegraph's article:

Politicians must listen and respond to the concerns that some white people have about changes to their communities, she added. Ms Blears said more candid discussion was needed to prevent myths about people from ethnic minorities "jumping the queue" for housing and services being allowed to circulate.

She said: "White working class people living on estates sometimes just don't feel anyone is listening or speaking up for them.

"Whilst they might not be experiencing the direct impact of migration, their fear of it is acute."

Her comments came as a Government report suggested a "real and perceived sense of unfairness" is felt by white people on estates around the country.

A lack of frank debate on the subject had allowed false rumours spread by far-right groups to be taken as truthful, the report found.

It discovered that people in the most deprived areas were more likely to be hostile to minorities, yet few white people interviewed had regular contact with people of other ethnicities.

The report, which was based on interviews in Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Thetford, Runcorn and Widnes, found that the concept of integration was not understood. Respondents believed it simply meant immigrants were to become "like us", the authors said.

Ms Blears said: "Changes in communities can generate unease and uncertainty. These changes need to be explained and questions need to be answered or the myths that currently surround the treatment of ethnic minorities 'jumping the queue' will become increasingly hard to shift.

"People who care about their communities and have lived there for generations have every right to ask questions about what is happening in their estate, street, neighbourhood.

"We cannot allow people to exploit situations but where there are legitimate concerns or questions they should be able to express them without fear of being branded a racist when all they really want are answers or information.

"The job of politicians and leaders is to listen and respond, to have the very debates that people in these estates are having or we risk losing touch with them altogether."

Ministers from the Department for Communities and Local Government are to hold seminars with other departments, academics and councils dealing with issues around immigration. They will seek to "bridge the gap" between authorities and white working class communities.

The Conservatives said the report's findings were a reflection of failed Labour policies. Baroness Warsi, the shadow community cohesion spokesman, said: "What an indictment of New Labour that they have to have an investigation to show that over the last 10 years they have completely lost touch with their so-called roots.

"The danger for the rest of us is that this has now created a ticking time bomb of racial and class prejudice. Amongst other things this has also demonstrated the dangers of Labour's past use of identity politics for electoral purposes.

"This should be a call to focus on the real core problems of worklessness, debt, welfare dependency, family breakdown and drug and alcohol abuse."

Big deal. What Blears's remarks and the government report come down to is the following: 1. Whites are to be seen as a kind of aggrieved "minority" in Britain whose concerns must be listened to. So don't call them racists. Talk to them instead.

2. Whites' concerns are based on false perceptions, which must be corrected.

3. These false perceptions are (a) that nonwhites are being given unfair advantages, and (b) that integration means that immigrants shall become "like us." Whites will be told that nonwhites are not being given unfair advantages, and that immigrants are not expected to become "like us."

4. Thus the real purpose of treating whites as an aggrieved group, of listening to whites' concerns, and of not calling them racists, is to remove white resistance to immigration and smooth Britains' transformation into a nonwhite, non-culturally British country.

One third of whites claim they are victims of racism

By James Chapman

A growing number of white people believe they are the victims of racial prejudice in Britain, official research has found. Almost one in three - 29 per cent - said they now expected to be treated worse than other races by key public services.

And the number of whites claiming to have been refused a job or discriminated against at work for reasons of race has doubled in the last five years, according to the Government study. Flashback: Riots in Burnley, Lancs, 2001 when whites and Asians clashed. Many white residents claimed Asians were favoured by the authorities Seven per cent believed they had failed to win a promotion because of their race, up from three per cent in 2003.

Three per cent alleged they had been turned down for a job for the same reason, up from one per cent.

In addition, the study reveals that most ethnic minorities living in Britain feel stronger ties to the nation than whites.

One in six white Britons feel only a slight sense of belonging to the nation.

Whites also now feel less able than other ethnic groups to influence decisions affecting their local area and the country as a whole. For example, 41 per cent of black African, 36 per cent of Bangladeshi and 35 per cent of Indian people feel they have a say in decisions affecting Britain, compared to 19 per cent of white people.

The survey of 15,000 people - ordered by Communities Secretary Hazel Blears - is likely to prompt a fierce debate about the disillusionment of the white majority.

The Tories blame Labour's race relations strategy.

Tory communities spokesman Baroness Warsi said: 'It's no wonder more people feel there is an increase in racism when Labour's multicultural industry is forever talking up what divides us rather than concentrating on what unites us.'

The research found that overall, whites are more likely than those from ethnic minorities to believe that racial prejudice and discrimination is getting worse.

Fifty-eight per cent said they believe there was more racial prejudice now than five years ago, compared to 44 per cent who were interviewed in 2001. The figure for ethnic minority communities has hardly changed, at 32 per cent.

The survey found that 29 per cent of white people expect to be treated worse than other groups by at least one of eight public services, including the police, prisons, courts, Crown Prosecution service, probation service, local housing organisations, schools or GPs.

Whites identified council housing departments or housing associations as the most likely to discriminate against them.

The proportion of members of ethnic minority groups who expected to face discrimination from one of the eight bodies fell from 38 per cent in 2001 to 34 per cent. But it remains higher than for white people in many categories, particularly the police.

Tory MP Greg Hands, a member of the Commons communities and local government select committee, said: 'It's a dangerous phenomenon if any part of the population feels they are being systematically discriminated against.'

Overall, 84 per cent of people felt they belonged strongly to the country, including 45 per cent who said they belonged very strongly.

However, nine out of ten Pakistani and Indian people said they felt a strong sense of belonging, compared to 84 per cent of whites.

Yet no debate over the merits of immigration policy is allowed. Everyone familiar with the phrase "let a thousand flowers bloom"?
