I acidentally missed a payment on a credit card. Washington Mutual, actually, which is one of those sleazy places that got a bailout and won't tell what they did with the money.

I get a call on my cellphone and it's them. That mystified me. Only six people have my cell number, and WaMu is not one of them. So how did they get my number?

Then it occured to me. I had called their automated system a few times to check on my account, and their system memorized my number.

When I checked on the internet, people were claiming WaMu was reequesting permission to take money out of their checking accounts. They already had their checking account numbers and transit numbers.

That's the main reason I deal in cash and money orders, and have no personal checking account.

At this rate, I'm going to close down my savings account and keep the cash in a box under the bed, and not deal with banks at all.

Looks like I'm going to have to change my cell phone number, too. And never, never call a corporation from it ever again.

Move before the banks do:

SAVINGS BANKS STOP HOARDING OF FUNDS; Presidents of All Institutions in the City Agree to Enforce the 60-Day Clause. FOR THE DEPOSITORS' GOOD It Prevents Senseless Runs and at the Same Time Gives All Enough for Real Needs.
New York Times

Page 2, 2343 words

As a precautionary measure for the protection of themselves, their depositors, and the banks in which their funds are deposited, al' savings banks of the City of New York decided yesterday to take advantage of the provision in the banking law which allows them to require depositors to give the legal notice of the intended withdrawal of their money. I was thinking more like a stone axe, circa 20,000 B.C.
