U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood admitted Thursday to a five-year affair with Cynthia M. Ore, the Maryland woman who alleges in a $5.5 million civil action that he physically abused her, but called her lawsuit "malicious and baseless."

"For about five years I had an affair I deeply regret," Sherwood said in a statement issued by his lawyer. "Although it was intermittent and ended last year, nothing I can say can diminish the pain and hurt I have caused my wife and family."

Sherwood, who had previously declined to detail his relationship with Ore, also issued a formal court response to her lawsuit, denying her abuse allegations and asking a judge to dismiss the suit.

His lawyer had the suit moved into the jurisdiction of the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. In court papers, attorney Bobby Burchfield argues the suit belongs in federal court because Ore, a Rockville, Md., resident, and Sherwood, a Tunkhannock Township Republican, live in different states and her suit asks for at least $75,000 in damages.

Ore's suit was filed in a local Washington D.C. court, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She alleges that Sherwood "repeatedly and violently physically assaulted and abused" her during their affair.

It was unclear if Ore would fight the shift to federal court. Efforts to reach her; her lawyer, attorney Patrick M. Regan; the congressman; and Burchfield were unsuccessful.

Sherwood said he accepts "full responsibility for my behavior"; apologized to his wife, family and constituents; and asked his constituents "to forgive my poor judgment on this personal matter."

"I will defend myself to the fullest extent possible against these malicious and baseless allegations, which in large part have already been fully investigated and rejected by law enforcement officials," he said.

Washington, D.C. police responded to a Sept. 15 incident at Sherwood's apartment after Ore called 911 and said he tried to choke her. But she and the congressman denied anything happened when talking to investigating officers, according to a police report, which also said both were less than candid and that police found no evidence of injuries on Ore. She claims she was hospitalized. The affair ended that day, according to Sherwood's court answer.

In his statement, Sherwood said he would not discuss the case further except in court.

In his court response, Sherwood denies living with Ore at his Washington apartment; hitting and choking her as she tried to fall asleep June 24, 2004; choking her Sept. 15 or abusing her any other time; begging her to stay with him after beating her; promising to marry her and start a family; or threatening her if she talked to police.

And once again the Amerian public gets the shaft.

We should thank the Nazis for giving us all those stark, frightening images. How else we gonna learn not to act like that? On the other hand, monkey see...

Most Americans fully accept getting the shaft. They see it as just a part of the political process in the US. While they are getting the shaft on 80% of the issues, R's and D's focus on the 20% of the issues that they agree with their politicians on. They promote these 100% like BOTS. They simply ignore all the issues giving them the shaft as though they don't exist or are unimportant when compared to what they support. And then there are the BOTS that support policies they are opposed to- just because the party supports them.

The Reps even came up with a campaign strategy to get their people to accept getting the shaft. No doubt that Bush was a major disappointment to Reps in his 1st 4 years on many fronts- whether they publically admitted it or not. The logical thing they should have done is used the year before the election to pressure Reps to get back to a traditionally Rep agenda. This is how the system works. But not in the last election. They put NO pressure at all on their politicians and supported them rabidly- as rabidly as I've ever seen.

The Rep party avoided all responsibilty for it's actions by introducing the 'lesser of 2 evils' strategy and making social issues an important political issue. They convinced the sheeple that actions didn't matter- the only important issue was that no matter what, Bush was better than the liberal. Bush was socially like them. And all Rep candidates were better than the liberal. Reps were convinced that the threat of a liberal getting into office was more important than holding their pols responsible. I couldn't believe it as it unfolded. Pressuring their pols or cleaning house never dawned on them. They could have made a difference, but all they knew was- I have to support Reps and except the shaft for the greater good. Using this lesser of 2 evils bit, the Reps avoided having to change their un American behavior. And Rep voters did not realize, that in accepting the argument, their choice was taken away- there was only 1 candidate that they could vote for- Bush.

I think they won the election with that strategy. Some BOTS also made the argument that Bush had to give them the shaft in his 1st term, but the second would be different. Some were convinced that judges were all that mattered. Into Bush's 2nd term, they are still getting the shaft and still responding to it in exactly the way the RNC wants them to respond. and will not hold them responsible for anything. The Rep pols know that the sheeple will reelect them no matter what they do.

Yes, the "thumbs up" was McCellan's line...
