Since my Cavalier bit the dust with one-half-million miles on it, I bought a red '99 Ford Windstar van, 139,000 miles, $2000. I bought it from a mechanic I know.

That particular van is not that good, but the reason I buy well-maintained used car is that the design flaws have all been repaired, They have on this one.

If I get 80,000 miles out of it I'll get my money's worth.

Never again will I drive a vehicle until it has 480,000 miles on it. The heat was going out because the heater core was clogging up, the headlights pointed in different directions, the struts and shocks were gone, the front seat was broken, the AC compressor was out, it needed an alignment, and the body damage had to be seen to be believed. Chronic complainer over minor insignificant things.

I don't see a river in the background or a box of government cheese in the side door opening.

There was also the fact the suspension and brakes were so bad I hit a patch of ice and spun into a muddy ditch. Cost $100 to get me towed out.

Have pug, will laugh.

He sold the cheese and canned meat for a down payment on his new luxury vehicle.

Government cheese, ugh.

Why can't the give away good stuff, like bottles of Pinot Noir and Romeo y Julietta cigars?

Have pug, will laugh.

I didn't want to cough up two grand cash, so I got a $2000 loan at the bank. It took half an hour, and I walked out cash in hand.

8.9 percent interest rate, for two years, About $80 a month.

I have bought exactly one new car in my life, which was the Cavalier.

I'll never do it again. I'm back to well-maintained used cars.

I hate working on Fords, though.

Have pug, will laugh.

Same here. I buy used cars AFTER the owner fixed all the design flaws. Then I get a good vehicle for two grand, after he bought it for $20,000 and spent $5000 for repairs.

Have pug, will laugh.

I hate working on Fords, though.

Me too.

My first car I pulled out of the muck up to its hubs for free.

Me and my buddy spent a Michigan winter tearing apart the frozen crankcase and rebuilding the engine. It was a 289 '67 Ford wagon. It was cold man, and it really hurt when you busted your knuckles on a bolt. Never got that 289 to run smooth. Whenever you cranked it up, it sounded like it had asthma.

Sold it for a '64 limited edtion Olds Starfire like this

in trade from a mechanic I knew. 496 cubes a not a scratch on it. Wish I still had that car.

Me too.

When I popped the hood on the van I couldn't believe what I was looking at.

It's a transverse V-6. The three front plugs are easy but they back ones have to be taken out by feel because you can't see them no matter what you do.

Damn things are made to slammed together in the plant, and to hell with the poor bastard who has squeeze his fingers and/or torso into impossible to get to places to fix stuff.

I've had about everything on a car apart except rear ends. They last for ever.

I hate working on Fords, though.

I had a 65 mustang I used to race, That was easy to work on. It took me one hour to pull the engine, and I didn't even have to lay on the ground once.

Now my f-150 is another story. It took me 3 days to change the oil pan, oil pump and rod bearings.

I shall not vote for evil, lesser or otherwise.

I never found fords particularly difficult to work on. I changed the water pump on a 74 Comet 250/I6 outdoors in sub 10 temperatures. Missed part of the old gasket and had to redo it come summer, but that was my fault, the point was that even a poorly motivated, ill-trained, and ill-coordinated slob like myself can fix a ford in adverse conditions.

It's been over twenty years since I sold that Comet, only time I open the hood on my mustang is to add windshield washer fluid.

Van, a 1995 Ford Taurus. not a one I had to pay over 4000$ for, and that was the van in 98 w/50,000 miles on it.. and the great thing on all of them is, that they are in better shape then those "new" cars all around me...LOLOLOL

My two best used vehicles were totalled by idiots rear-ending me. A 63 black VW bug and a 70 Chevy Malibu 350 4 barrel hauled ass. One could not step on the accelerator without unintentionally burning rubber.

I only change plugs every 100,000 miles. When spring rolls around, I'll change them, and since I'm only going to keept the van 80,000 to 100,000 miles, I'll won't be changing them again.

I hope oil changes aren't too bad. On the Cavalier I had to take the front passenger tire off to get to the filter.

That was the worst. Mom had an '02 like that. It sucked. Her '06 Cobalt has a big cap on the top of the engine you unscrew & just insert a new filter cartridge.
