(CNN) -- The former police officer accused of shooting an unarmed man at a northern California commuter train station was arrested Tuesday in Nevada, authorities said. Oscar Grant, 22, was killed January 1 in a shooting at a subway station in California's Bay Area.

Former transit officer Johannes Mehserle is charged with homicide in connection with the death of Oscar Grant.

Former Bay Area Rapid Transit Officer Johannes Mehserle has waived extradition and should return soon to California, said Undersheriff Paul Howell of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Mehserle was arrested on a fugitive warrant charging homicide. He is accused of the shooting of Oscar Grant III at an Oakland, California, station on New Year's Day. The incident was captured on video by several witnesses and spurred violent protests in the northern California city.

Mehserle, 27, was taken into custody in Douglas County, Nevada at about 7 p.m. (10 p.m. ET), Sgt. Dan Coverly of Douglas County Sheriff's Office told CNN affiliate KGO-TV in San Francisco.

Mehserle resigned from his job as a BART police officer days after the shooting. The transit agency's police force and Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff are investigating the incident.

Grant, a 22-year-old father, was killed on New Year's Day in a crowded BART train station. Police had been called to the Fruitvale station after passengers complained about fights on a train and took Grant and several other people off the train once they arrived. Don't Miss

Videos from witnesses show Mehserle shooting Grant in the back as another BART officer kneeled on the man. The shooting spawned public outrage and a string of protests that led to more than a hundred riot-related arrests.

Police have not said whether Grant had been involved in the fight.

Referring to Mehserle's arrest, BART said, "This comes after the BART Police Department conducted a thorough investigation that involved nine detectives, which BART Police turned over to District Attorney Thomas Orloff on Monday, Jan. 12."

Leads led investigators to Mehserle in Zephyr Cove, Nevada. Contacted through his attorney, Mehserle surrendered. He was taken into custody at 6:20 p.m. PT without incident.

Jail staff report that Mehserle has cooperated and is in a segregated area and on a precautionary health and welfare watch.

The Oakland Police Department is running its own investigation into the killing, at the request of Mayor Ron Dellums, Officer Jeff Thomason said Wednesday.

If this was not recorded by several people from different angles, we never would have heard about this story. THey just would have planted a throw-down weapon on him and called it a day.

I'm shocked.

This is a rare occasion when pigs turn on their own.

if a people will not prosecute officials who subvert and violate the constitution, then the constitution has no authority over officials.

I'm thankful they could not confiscate all the phones. The arrest would never have happened without the rage and rampage of the citizens. Watch police forces come up with the technology to shut off all electronic devices within a 500 foot radius soon. The NWO/Police State agenda has no way of dealing with wildcard variables such as rapid internet dessemination of true news, and cell phone videos. However, the people have to be careful of the NWO wildcard technologies as well. Be careful of drinking their water, eating their food, and watching their TV.

We just need to remember arrest may not lead to conviction.

That technology already exists for consumers:

I agree.

I wonder how much the riots have to do with this?

Yes.

And you can bet there was plenty of behind-the-scenes shenanigans to try and figure a way out of the mess they are in. Things we'll never hear about.

Pigs do not like to be recorded. People have been arrested for that.

There's always justified anger... only differene is this time there was at least one small riot. There's a lesson to be learned here for those who are paying attention.

The DA "hasn't decided if he's filing Murder one or Murder two" according to news updates.

For those who have forgotten, the officers charged with the "rhythm stick party" on Rodney King's head were first tried in Simi Valley where many retired LAPD reside and they were understandably exonerated, and the riots soon followed. So, the DA (an elected office) has covered his ass by taking this action but he will all but guarantee conviction on a greatly reduced charge (involuntary manslaughter) if not complete exoneration depending on how fearful the jurors are of black rioting.

(In short, the DA would be doing the ex cop a big solid by filing Murder one because that will make it easier for the jury to convict of a reduced charge or exonerate the soon-to-be-infamous-ex-cop.)

I'm predicting that a change of venue will be motioned and granted and it will not be moved to an area with a predominantly African American jury pool.

Remember during the trial when the LAPD training officer/defense witness was asked if Rodney King's raising of his arm to defend against baton blows was aggression against the officers he replied, "That's a perception", and the sympathetic jury consisting of cop families heard all it needed to hear. The state wants to avoid rioting but they won't sacrifice this young ex cop, so watch the assigned venue for trial.

I suspect what they are thinking but won't say is, "Dam rite the cop was nervous with all of them crows on the platform threatening to break into a riot. The cop screwed up and should be fired, but he didn't murder that nig...I mean ex con...er, colored feller."

"Dear Jack, I heard our song and it got me thinking of you. Love, Ennis."

you're right and you broke the story as far as im concerned,. when you posted that topic 'wtch this pig murder a guy and tell me you trust cops', right after it first happened & before it even made big news. remember there were posters there defending the murderous pig? unreal. What a sad story this is. poor gy didnt have a chance. i heard he was begging the cops not to hurt him before he was murdered. this is even more reason i am glad i filed the complaint against the pig that tried to intimidate me into not filming the pigs after i had seen them push down what looked like a kid. the public must be vigilant in asserting and defending their God given rights to film whatever they want, with no repercussions or attempts at intimidation. good thing all the public here had the clarity and skepticism to film this entire thing, even before the cops murdered him. See when you think about it, filming an average police/ public interaction is not always exciting and there appears to be no real reason for it. ., other than to monitor police. in this case an event (murder) happened.

before it happened, they were simply vigilant people monitoring and recording public servants. this is a good thing, a good sign, and bodes well for the young people of today and for the future of our society.

A relative mentioned to me, before the cop was charged with murder, watching the protests in northern CA that 'the same people protesting this are the same ones who call for total gun bans'. to a large degree i understand their point because in the false -paradigm, the people who 'protest corrupt cops' are **generally** (not here of course), at least in public perception, LEFTISTS. (aka gun grabbers).

Glory to God in the highest, and Peace to His people on Earth.
