WASHINGTON -- Federal authorities arrested 582 alleged gang members over a two-week period, officials said Monday, targeting an estimated 80 violent groups they say have spawned street crimes across the country.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff called the gangs "a threat to our homeland security and ... a very urgent law enforcement priority."

Investigators picked up most of the offenders between July 16 and July 28 on immigration violations for being in the United States illegally. Seventy-six face criminal charges, ranging from illegal possession of a firearm to holding fraudulent documents.

"For too long, these gangs have gone unchecked _ flouting all laws and demonstrating a blatant disregard for public safety," Chertoff said in announcing the arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. ICE is an arm of the Homeland Security Department.

Investigators targeted members in 27 states of what they considered to be the most violent street gangs, including Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13; Sure Inos; the 18th Street Gang; Latin Kings; the Mexican Mafia; Border Brothers; Brown Pride and numerous others.

Many of the arrests came in large urban areas, including 61 in Boston, 28 in Denver, and 23 each in Los Angeles and Detroit. But even smaller cities have been infiltrated by the gangs, the arrests showed, including 42 in Birmingham, Ala., and one each in Grand Rapids, Mich.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; and North Platte, Neb.

The crackdown is part of ICE's ongoing "Operation Community Shield" campaign, targeting gang activity with other federal and state authorities. So far, ICE has made 1,057 arrests as part of the sting.

More than half of them have been members of MS-13, a street gang rooted in Central America where members have been known to behead enemies and attack with grenades and machetes. Federal officials estimate between 8,000 and 10,000 MS-13 members live in 31 states _ the majority of them in the country illegally.

"We're just getting started," said ICE investigations chief Marcy Forman.

I heard on the radio yesterday that out of all those "headline" arrests, something like 17 are facing criminal charges. Just government (isn't homeland security grand) propaganda for the gubbers.

We needed Homeland Security and Chertoff to give us these words of wisdom? How many hundreds of thousands of crimes have they been allowed to commit before the danger they pose was recognized?

Wake me up when they close the borders - until then this faux WOT will be nothing but a ruse to destroy the Bill of Rights.

That's it? 17? And according to Chertoff they an urgent priority? Now what message is Chertoff trying to plant in the people's minds?:

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff called the gangs "a threat to our homeland security and ... a very urgent law enforcement priority."

"...when a society believes in nothing, fear becomes the only agenda..."

Arete hits the nail on the head.

Bush's immigration/border policy alone PROVE "Homeland Security" and the War on Terror to be 100% fraud. The only Homeland whose real security is involved in the US "Homeland Security" is Israel.

Wake me up when the borders are sealed AND it is safe walk anywhere and anytime in Washington, DC--safe to go to an ATM or the local American mall.

Charley Reese said well the other day: In 2001, our own criminals killed four times as many American than did "terrorists".

Dr. Condoleezza Rice said that the “security of Israel is the key to security of the world.”

Agreed. I just wonder though what Chertoff was trying to plant in the minds of Americans. They chose their words carefully. So this wasnt just some offhand remark.

Closing the borders isn't going to make it safe to walk anywhere and anytime in Washington DC. It wasn't safe to walk anywhere and anytime in DC 40 years ago.

Well, this seems to be the second leg in the homeland security propaganda campaign. Bush himself made close to the same type of claims in one of his media event addresses to the public. The message is obvious - we're on the job rounding up evil-doers and not just tramping all over the publics liberty and freedoms.

You are, of course, entirely correct.

Enforcement is a joke.

Good Cop Bad Cop
commentary by Ben Vinyard

We have some small cause for celebration. Last week the pressure exerted in the anti-illegal immigration campaign in Arkansas culminated in the arrest of 119 illegal aliens. That’s about enough for two Greyhound buses, one refrigerated semi or six beat up old pick-up trucks. That’s also 119 jobs that had been drained away from White natural-born Arkansans in an economically depressed area of the country. The local news media was grudgingly forced to report on the story and decided to focus their propaganda efforts on the suggestion the arrests may have caused children of the lawbreakers to be left at daycare centers. Yeah, it must suck being a criminal. Illegal immigrants are prima facie

felons. Try as I might, I couldn’t find any emotional stories about the children of meth-lab owners left at daycare while daddy made a one-way visit to the county lock-up. And just how in the hell are these low-wage illegals getting daycare vouchers anyway? All the while Governor Huckabee and the Arkansas Dim-Gazette are trying to convince us the criminal invaders aren’t receiving taxpayer-funded benefits. Meanwhile, Arkansas readers have to find out from a newspaper in far away Tuscaloosa that immigration in Arkansas has increased a jaw-dropping 337%. Bienvenidos a la Republica de Aztlan!

The police raid makes the farce of the LULAC national convention in Little Rock just weeks ago and those pandering Arkansas political hopefuls in attendance look even more foolish. How is it that Clark County Sheriff Troy Tucker was completely unaware of the presence of enough illegal aliens to populate a small Arkansas town in his own county? I knew about it and I live in Georgia, for Christ’s sake.

Another angered Arkansas local police officer, Capt. Mike Fletcher, commander of Troop K of the state police complained, “What if there’d been a wreck? There’d be no one to work it. I’ve got to leave somebody to work on that Interstate.” Shit, man, what if there had been a seat belt violation? Who would have been there to enforce the Click It or Ticket policy while 119 lousy criminals were being rounded up?

I like the fact ICE didn’t notify Sheriff Tucker or any other local authorities beforehand, which may have served as a tip-off to Petit Jean Poultry employees.

I like the fact that Craig Griffin, the agent in charge of Texarkana’s ICE office, possibly smelling a rat, refuses to return Tucker’s phone calls.

I like the fact that “Don’t Call Me Shirley” Temple Black, an ICE spokesman, thinks that not notifying Tucker was the smart play and indicated that by not doing so, “we fulfilled our responsibility.”

I don’t like the fact that Dan Kane, another ICE spokesman, said none of the illegal children would be forced to leave the U.S. After all, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has already paved the moral road map for us: we should not separate the children from their parents.

Ahhhh, ahhh, ahhh. (etc...)
