Beverly Eckert was flying to the city for a celebration of what would have been her husband Sean Rooney's 58th birthday, reports the Press Association. Mr Rooney died on the 98th floor of the World Trade Center's south tower.

She was among the 44 passengers and four crew on board the Continental Connection flight operated by Colgan Air when it crashed in the Buffalo suburb of Clarence Center.

After 9/11, Ms Eckert refused to accept a cash settlement as compensation and instead sued the government.

"I am suing because unlike other investigative avenues… my lawsuit requires all testimony be given under oath and fully uses powers to compel evidence." Eckert wrote in December 2003 in a statement entitled My Silence Cannot Be Bought.

"The victims’ fund was not created in a spirit of compassion.… Lawmakers capped the liability of the airlines at the behest of lobbyists who descended on Washington while the September 11 fires still smoldered." she wrote.

Other September 11 relatives who accepted settlements forfeited their right to sue the airlines, airports, security companies, or other US organizations that could have been faulted for negligence and inadequate security measures. This ensured that very little detail of the attacks emerged outside of the government appointed 9/11 Commission.

In the same statement Ms Eckert also wrote:

"I want to know what went so wrong with our intelligence and security systems that a band of religious fanatics was able to turn four U.S. passenger jets into an enemy force, attack our cities and kill 3,000 civilians with terrifying ease. I want to know why two 110-story skyscrapers collapsed in less than two hours and why escape and rescue options were so limited."

As a co-founder of the steering committee group "Voices For Sept. 11" Ms Eckert joined other activists in pushing for an Investigative Commission.

Only because of the consistent efforts of the relatives groups were the deaths of more than 2800 Americans ever formally investigated by a government who would have rather kept the truth about 9/11 buried.

In 2004 Ms Eckert also successfully lobbied Congress to pass a sweeping reform of the U.S. intelligence system.

Last week, Ms Eckert was at the White House to talk with President Barack Obama about how the new administration could deal with terror suspects.

According to reports, the Colgan Air flight was on final approach to Buffalo airport, 5 miles from the runway, when the control tower lost all contact. Weather was reported as light snow and fog and a 17 MPH wind. There was no radio message indicating a problem, so whatever happened happened in an instant. Only one house on the ground was destroyed, so the aircraft was on a nearly vertical path when it hit.

To get an aircraft into a flat-spin from 1,500 feet; that requires some massive forces. For the moment, I'm asking where the rudder & elevators are. If they came off violently in flight, you have all you need to do that.

Icing can't account for the "pancaking." Even if the aircraft did stall out, it would have a prominent forward motion and not end up facing opposite the runway.

It's going to take a whistle-blower to reveal the facts on this one. Possibly, somebody will get a picture of the rear of the rudder; that might be revealing.

There was a strange combination of re-bookings, to get that many people on this one flight. Which flight was she originally booked on & for how long? If this was sabotage, it would take some time to set it up & a lot of "connections."

Whatever happened, there was probably nothing but some cussing and screaming on the CVR. It had to have been fast; maybe 20 seconds from the first indication to the Pearly Gates.

The autopsies alone will be revealing. If it 'dropped,' there will be massive spinal compression fractures & compressed/shattered hips. Any gyration will alter the fracture patterns.

It turns out that the copilot was from my neck of the woods. Sad for all.

Beverly Eckert (May 29, 1951 – February 12, 2009) was one of the members of the 9/11 Family Steering Committee for the 9/11 Commission.[1] Eckert's husband, Sean Rooney, died aged 50 in the attacks of September 11, 2001. Eckert died at age 57 in a commuter airplane crash on February 12, 2009.[2] She was travelling from Newark Liberty International Airport to Buffalo Niagara International Airport aboard Colgan Air Flight 3407. The plane crashed in Clarence Center, New York.

She had met with President Barack Obama just a few days earlier in her role as an advocate for those affected by 9/11.[3] Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who as Senator from New York worked with Eckert on 9/11 matters, described Eckert as one of the "principal champions" of the creation of the 9/11 Commission.[4]

Eckert was the co-chairperson of the group "Voices of September 11th". She pushed for a commission to investigate 9/11 and to establish a memorial.[5]

Life before September 11 attack

Eckert was born in 1951 in Buffalo, New York, and met her future husband, Sean P. Rooney, at a dance at Canisius High School, a Jesuit-run academy in that city, when both were 16 years old. She received a degree in fine arts in 1974 from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Rooney lived in Buffalo until 1978, working as a manager of restaurants, until he began working in the financial services industry and moving to Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut. When he died he was a vice president for risk management services at the Aon Corporation. He worked on the 98th floor of the World Trade Center's south tower, one of 32 employees in Aon's offices there.[6]

The couple, who had no children and lived in the Glenbrook section of Stamford, Connecticut, had been married 21 years when Rooney died. Before Rooney's death, they had celebrated their 50th birthdays with vacations to Vermont, to mark his, and Morocco, to mark hers.[6]

September 11, 2001

When planes hit the World Trade Center towers, Rooney called his wife and exchanged voice mail messages with her. To get to safety, he made his way to the 105th floor of his building, trying to reach the roof, when he died.[6]

After Eckert learned about the attacks, she went home and stayed on the phone with her husband until she heard the tower collapse.[7]

Eckert became a leading activist among 9/11 victims' families, joining with others in lobbying for creation of the 9/11 Commission, improvements to national security, and for creation of a memorial at the World Trade Center site.[7]

"I'm trying to find a new path for myself," Eckert told The Advocate of Stamford on the first anniversary of her husband's death. "The life I led a year ago doesn't exist."[7]

In pressing federal elected officials to do a better job in protecting Americans from terrorism, she was among a number of 9/11 victims' family members who "became amateur lobbyists, spending months in Congress and ultimately forcing lawmakers in 2004 to pass sweeping reforms of U.S. intelligence", according to the Chicago Tribune "Swamp" blog.[8] She also spoke in opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.[7]

"I did all of this for Sean's memory, I did it for him," Eckert said. "There is a euphoria in knowing that we reached the top of the hill. [...] I just wanted Sean to come home from work. Maybe now, someone else's Sean will get to come home."[8]

Locally, Eckert worked with Stamford city officials on various memorial projects. She left her job at General Re and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and, beginning in September 2008, as a tutor at the Julia A. Stark Elementary School. She was also a member of the Glenbrook Neighborhood Association. In honor of her husband and other victims, Eckert planted birch trees near a trail in Cove Island Park where she and Rooney learned to in-line skate. At the Glenbrook train station, where her husband commuted to work, she commissioned a mural and planted a sycamore tree as a memorial. Shortly before her death, she had joined a neighborhood association committee to improve the station.[7]

Several years after she became a widow, she met a man during a trip to Block Island, and the couple later lived together in Stamford.[6]

A week before her death, Eckert was in a group meeting with Obama to discuss detainees at Guantanamo and other matters. Eckert was impressed with Obama,[9] who in turn called her a “tireless advocate for the families, those whose lives were forever changed on that September day” and "an inspiration to me and to so many others”.[6]

When Eckert died, she was traveling to Buffalo for a gathering with her family and Rooney’s to mark what would have been his 58th birthday on February 15. A ceremony had also been scheduled at Canisius High School in which she was to award a student with a memorial scholarship in Rooney's honor.[9]

Of those lost in the plane crash, Eckert's death "in particular resonated across the nation because of its haunting poignancy", according to an article in the The Buffalo News just after the disaster. Eckert's advocacy for families of 9/11 victims had been prominent nationwide, and the victim's advocate had just become a victim of another violent death. "Friends were stunned by the idea that Eckert had died in a way that paralleled her husband — a fiery plane crash."[9]

The Buffalo News article described Eckert as "a slight, blonde woman known for her tailored clothes, her love of home renovation projects and pottery-making, and her unstoppable drive and determination."[9]

Although this doesn't mention it, Beverly Eckert was also one of the widows who pushed for the formation of the 9/11 Commission - which, faulty as it was, was better than it would have been, thanks to her efforts.

And it also doesn't talk about her dedicated work with September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, an anti-war group which works for peaceful solutions around the world.

Rest in peace, Beverly.

On September 11, 2001, Beverly Eckert was talking to her beloved husband on a cell phone as he fought to escape the World Trade Center. When the south tower collapsed, she was still on the phone with him and listened to him die.

In the days, weeks and years after the 9/11 attacks, Eckert was a tireless advocate for the victims' families. She spearheaded protests that led politicians to set aside more land for a memorial at Ground Zero, fought to ensure federal authorities would thoroughly probe the cause of the twin towers' collapse and spoke eloquently again and again about her husband, Sean Rooney, and the many others who died that day.

Today, Eckert's relatives are grieving again. She was one of the 49 people who perished in a plane crash in Buffalo late Thursday. Eckert was traveling upstate to celebrate the 58th birthday of her late husband, who was a native of Buffalo. She was scheduled to deliver an address to Canisius High School, where Sean's legacy was to be honored with a scholarship.

"We know she was on that plane and now she's with him" Eckert’s sister Sue Borque told The Buffalo News at the Buffalo Airport where flight 3047 was scheduled to land at 10:40 p.m.

Eckert, who was a member of the 9/11 Commission's Family Steering Committee, spearheaded a push to have the airlines held liable for the security lapses and other missteps that allowed terrorists to hijack the passenger jets. Just last week, Eckert was at the White House with Barack Obama, part of a meeting the president had with relatives of those killed in the 2001 attacks and the bombing of the USS Cole to discuss how the new administration would handle terror suspects. She was such an important part of all of our work, said Mary Fetchet, another 9/11 family activist. She learned Eckert was aboard the plane from another close Eckert family friend now headed to Buffalo. Officials investigating the crash have not yet confirmed she was on board the plane. Eckert was one of the most visible, tearful faces in the aftermath of the terror attacks. She cried as she told the story about how her husband Sean Rooney - her high school sweetheart - was on the phone in the World Trade Center telling her he loved her when suddenly there was a loud explosion and nothing more. She cried in Congress as she tried to make the government do a better job protecting its citizens from terrorism. Eckert was part of a small group of Sept. 11 widows, mothers, and children who became amateur lobbyists, ultimately forcing lawmakers in 2004 to pass sweeping reforms of the U.S. intelligence apparatus. They spent months walking the halls of Congress. All of the women were grieving, but Eckert seemed unable or uninterested in holding back her tears. When it was over and theyd won passage of the intelligence reform law, Eckert vowed to quit her high-profile role cold turkey. All she wanted, she said, was to go home, buy groceries, and return to something like a regular life. I did all of this for Seans memory, I did it for him, she said, crying again. There is a euphoria in knowing that we reached the top of the hill. ... I just wanted Sean to come home from work. Maybe now, someone elses Sean will get to come home. Eckert was flying to her hometown Thursday night when the plane crashed on approach to the Buffalo airport. She had planned on celebrating her late husbands 58th birthday. After the 2001 attacks, she co-chaired the 9/11 Family Steering Committee, a group of activists devoted to exposing government failures that led up to the 2001 attacks, and fixing them. She pushed for a 9/11 Commission. She pushed the Bush administration to provide more information to the commission. And when the commissions work was over, she pushed Congress to adopt their recommendations. It was not an easy role for her. One night after a long day at Congress, she found herself in the New York City train station, without a connecting train to her Connecticut home. We slept in the train station. We had no place else to go. Thats when you look at yourself and say, What am I doing? How can we possibly get this done?. As Congress hemmed and hawed, Eckert vowed to sleep there, too, if it would get the law passed.

Beverly Eckert was a key member of the now-defunct 9/11 Family Steering Committee, an offshoot of the Coalition for an Independent 9/11 Commission, which advocated the creation of an independent commission to investigate the intelligence failures that made 9/11 possible. The coalition represented a wide array of 9/11 families’ organizations, including Families of September 11, Sept. 11 Advocates (also known as “The Jersey Girls”), and Voices of September 11. Although the call for a commission was initially resisted by the Bush Administration, the coalition eventually prevailed in the creation of the 9/11 Commission.

Beverly cooperated with and monitored the 9/11 Commission, but later criticized the commission’s final report, claiming that commission members had only selective memories of all the evidence they had been presented. She also later complained publicly that many of the protective measures recommended by the 9/11 Commission were never implemented.

In 2006, Beverly was prominently featured in the 9/11 documentary film, On Native Soil, a must-see for anyone interested in learning the facts of that fateful day in our history.

Most recently, Beverly joined forces with the ACLU in December 2008 to challenge the legitimacy of the Guantánamo military commissions and their ability to achieve justice.

Beverly Eckert was not a 9/11 Truther. She was not a conspiracy nut. She never wore a tinfoil hat or stood on a streetcorner with a bullhorn yelling, “9/11 Was An Inside Job!” She was a respectable insurance professional who lived a quiet, unassuming life with her beloved husband in Stamford, CT until 9/11 changed everything. The head of an organization of victims families of 9-11 (and a family member , herself, of a victim of 9-11) had her picture taken when she asked Obama face to face to investigate the 9-11 attacks since she said, it appeared not to be as presented... The Mossad does not always tell the foreign ministry what it is doing now does it??? Foreign Ministry sources following the plane crash in Buffalo, New York, which left 50 people dead, expressed concerns on Friday for the lives of two Israeli citizens who may have been onboard the aircraft.

The concerns arose after two families contacted the ministry after being unable to contact their loved ones.

The Israeli Consulate in New York is also involved in an effort to inquire for more details on the victims of the crash.

A Continental Airlines spokesperson said, "At this point, we have no knowledge of any Israelis onboard the plane." However the Foreign Ministry stated that the airline had contacted the two Israelis' families.

Continental Connection Flight 3407 flying from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey headed for Buffalo Niagara International Airport crashed into a house while coming in to land Thursday night.

The crash sparked a fiery explosion that killed all 49 people on board and one person on the ground.

The Foreign Ministry continued efforts to gather information on the two Israelis suspected to have been on the flight and the Israeli Consulate in New York is in constant contact with the families.
