My father was a general contractor, I was raised in the field, and built houses from 12 to 21.

I have a very low opinion of modern building techniques, and have for years been a fan of strawbale houses, which are cheap, easy to build, and solid.

It is even possible to build a good cardboard house, although I would only do it in the Southwest.

I'd put it up, the adobe the inside and outside with lime plaster. Occasionally patch it, and it'd last a hundred years.

Imagine the ease of it. Anyone could put up a cardboard house, and plastering is easy, too.

Of course, it could only be one story. (1 image)

I'm interested in straw bale, too. Have you ever built one?

Have you ever built one?

No, but I have the whole thing in my head.

Also, look up "papercrete" for something interesting.

"...What Is Papercrete?

Papercrete is made from recycled paper with a small amount of cement and sand added. The ratio is 60/20/20. The paper/concrete/sand mixture is stirred in a large barrel, much like a blender, until all paper is shredded and evenly mixed with the concrete and sand. Papercrete can be mortared, drilled, hammered, nailed, used as plaster and as an infill between poles or studs. Recently, some people made the mixture without cement, and created Fidobe or Paper Adobe. These products are dense building logs used in construction.

While researching, I found a gentleman that had made a mixer out of an old 55 gallon drum, which was mounted on an old car axle. A unique gearing system attached to an old lawn mower blade did the mixing. He would hook this contraption behind his car, take a slow drive around the block, and have perfect papercrete......."

"...Q. What are photovoltaics and how do they relate to cool metal roofing?

A. Photovoltaics (PV) are products that convert sunlight into electricity. They are commonly referred to as solar cells. PVs are made of semiconductor materials such as silicon. Cells of PV material are put together to form a module, and modules can be grouped together on roofs to form arrays which generate power to the building. There are two primary types of PV systems: Crystalline (mono and poly) and Amorphous. The crystalline systems consist of an array of silicon wafers sandwiched between two layers of glass. These panels can be heavy and must be attached to a roof using metal brackets or bracing. The amorphous silicon PV systems are flexible and light weight. A thin film of amorphous PV can be produced as a laminate to be adhered to the pan of a metal standing seam roof. In that case, the PV system is actually integrated into the building design and is almost unnoticeable on the roof. Metal roofing provides the best platform for the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system. The synergy between the flexible PV and metal roofing products is causing an increasing use of the systems.

Both types of PV technology cost the same in terms of dollars per installed watt of power. More financial incentives are being offered by states for the use of PV technology. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 provides a credit equal to 30% of expenditures for the purchase of qualified PV equipment, up to $2,000.
