Simple elixir called a 'miracle liquid'

Electrolyzed water cleans, degreases -- and treats athlete's foot. The solution is replacing toxic chemicals.

By Marla Dickerson

February 23, 2009

It's a kitchen degreaser. It's a window cleaner. It kills athlete's foot. Oh, and you can drink it.

Sounds like the old "Saturday Night Live" gag for Shimmer, the faux floor polish plugged by Gilda Radner. But the elixir is real. It has been approved by U.S. regulators. And it's starting to replace the toxic chemicals Americans use at home and on the job.

The stuff is a simple mixture of table salt and tap water whose ions have been scrambled with an electric current. Researchers have dubbed it electrolyzed water -- hardly as catchy as Mr. Clean. But at the Sheraton Delfina in Santa Monica, some hotel workers are calling it el liquido milagroso -- the miracle liquid.

That's as good a name as any for a substance that scientists say is powerful enough to kill anthrax spores without harming people or the environment.

Used as a sanitizer for decades in Russia and Japan, it's slowly winning acceptance in the United States. A New York poultry processor uses it to kill salmonella on chicken carcasses. Minnesota grocery clerks spray sticky conveyors in the checkout lanes. Michigan jailers mop with electrolyzed water to keep potentially lethal cleaners out of the hands of inmates.

In Santa Monica, the once-skeptical Sheraton housekeeping staff has ditched skin-chapping bleach and pungent ammonia for spray bottles filled with electrolyzed water to clean toilets and sinks.

"I didn't believe in it at first because it didn't have foam or any scent," said housekeeper Flor Corona. "But I can tell you it works. My rooms are clean."

Management likes it too. The mixture costs less than a penny a gallon. It cuts down on employee injuries from chemicals. It reduces shipping costs and waste because hotel staffers prepare the elixir on site. And it's helping the Sheraton Delfina tout its environmental credentials to guests.

The hotel's kitchen staff recently began disinfecting produce with electrolyzed water. They say the lettuce lasts longer. They're hoping to replace detergent in the dishwasher. Management figures the payback time for the $10,000 electrolysis machine will be less than a year.

"It's green. It saves money. And it's the right thing to do," said Glenn Epstein, executive assistant at the Sheraton Delfina. "It's almost like fantasy."

Actually, it's chemistry. For more than two centuries, scientists have tinkered with electrolysis, the use of an electric current to bring about a chemical reaction (not the hair-removal technique of the same name that's popular in Beverly Hills). That's how we got metal electroplating and large-scale production of chlorine, used to bleach and sanitize.

It turns out that zapping salt water with low-voltage electricity creates a couple of powerful yet nontoxic cleaning agents. Sodium ions are converted into sodium hydroxide, an alkaline liquid that cleans and degreases like detergent, but without the scrubbing bubbles. Chloride ions become hypochlorous acid, a potent disinfectant known as acid water.

"It's 10 times more effective than bleach in killing bacteria," said Yen-Con Hung, a professor of food science at the University of Georgia-Griffin, who has been researching electrolyzed water for more than a decade. "And it's safe."

There are drawbacks.

Electrolyzed water loses its potency fairly quickly, so it can't be stored long. Machines are pricey and geared mainly for industrial use. The process also needs to be monitored frequently for the right strength.

Then there's the "magic water" hype that has accompanied electrolyzed drinking water. A number of companies sell so-called ionizers for home use that can range from about $600 to more than $3,000. The alkaline water, proponents say, provides health benefits.

But Richard Wullaert, a Santa Barbara consultant, said consumers should be careful.

"Some of these people are making claims that will get everybody in trouble," said Wullaert, whose nonprofit Functional Water Society is spreading the word about electrolyzed water. "It's time for some serious conferences with serious scientists to give this credibility."

Most of the growth has happened outside the United States.

Russians are putting electrolyzed water down oil wells to kill pesky microbes. Europeans use it to treat burn victims. Electrolyzing equipment is helping to sanitize drinking water in parts of Latin American and Africa.

It's big in Japan. People there spray it on sushi to kill bacteria and fill their swimming pools with it, eliminating the need for harsh chlorine. Doctors use it to sterilize equipment and treat foot fungus and bedsores. It's the secret weapon in Sanyo Electric Corp.'s "soap-less" washing machine.

Now Sanyo is bent on cleaning up Japan's taxis with a tiny air purifier that fits into a car's cup holder. The device uses electrolyzed water to shield passengers from an unwelcome byproduct of Japan's binge-drinking business culture: vomit.

"There was some concern about the spreading of viruses and bacteria via the taxi, not to mention the . . . stinky smells," Sanyo spokesman Aaron Fowles said.

Sanyo's taxi air washer isn't yet available in the U.S.; commuters will have to hold their noses for now. But the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency have approved electrolyzed water for a variety of uses.

PuriCore of Malvern, Pa., and Oculus Innovative Sciences of Petaluma, Calif., have developed treatments for chronic wounds. Albuquerque, N.M.-based MIOX Corp. sells municipal water-purifying systems. EAU Technologies Inc. of Kennesaw, Ga., caters to both ends of a dairy cow, with alkaline water to aid the animal's digestion and acid water to clean up its manure.

Integrated Environmental Technologies Inc. of Little River, S.C., is working with oil companies to keep wells free of bacteria and with high schools to sanitize sweaty wrestling mats and grungy football equipment that spread skin infections.

Electrolyzer Corp. of Woburn, Mass., is going after the hospitality market. The Sheraton Delfina purchased one of its machines. So has the Hyatt Regency Chicago and the Trump International Beach Resort near Miami.

Patrick Lucci, Electrolyzer's vice president of marketing, likes to bombard prospects with scientific studies, then give 'em the old razzle-dazzle. He'll swig the processed salt water before he mops the floor with it.

"Try that with bleach," he said.

The unit in Santa Monica looks a little like an oversized water heater, with two tanks side by side -- one for making the hypochlorous acid sanitizer, the other for the sodium hydroxide cleanser.

Rebecca Jimenez, director of housekeeping, heard grumbling from the cleaning staff when the hotel brought the machine in last fall. Housekeepers doubted that the flat, virtually odorless liquids were really doing the job. Some poured the guest shampoos into their bottles to work up a lather.

"If it doesn't suds up, it doesn't work," Jimenez said. "That's the mentality."

Still, she said, most have come around and are enjoying working without fumes and peeling skin.

Minnesota food scientist Joellen Feirtag said she was similarly skeptical. So she installed an electrolysis unit in her laboratory and began researching the technology. She found that the acid water killed E. coli, salmonella, listeria and other nasty pathogens. Yet it was gentle enough to soothe her children's sunburns and acne.

She's now encouraging food processors to take a look at electrolyzed water to help combat the disease outbreaks that have roiled the industry. Most are dubious.

"This sounds too good to be true, which is really the biggest problem," said Feirtag, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota. "But it's only a matter of time before this becomes mainstream."

That's why they wrote and promote CODEX ALIMENTARIUS.

this is interesting and timely. i've been looking into an under the counter water ionizer for my kitchen. they are pricey. i know that drinking an oz or two of apple cider vinegar a day or fresh squeezed lemon in water is an inexpensive way to alkanize your body, but the electrolyzing sounds interesting.

How to Build a Water Ionizer By eHow Health Editor

Rate: (13 Ratings)

Water ionizers are an excellent way to ensure that the water you drink from your faucet is free from a host of waterborne contaminants typically found in municipal water. You can build your own water ionizer to enjoy the benefits of ionized water without paying the price for a commercial model.

InstructionsDifficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need: Two 1-gallon plastic storage containers
One 2-inch PVC pipe
Electrical wire
Piece of chamois slightly larger than PVC pipe
12V or 24V power adapter
Two crocodile clips
Two 0.5-inch by 0.75-inch titanium electrodes

Step1
Set up the 2 1-gallon plastic containers next to each other and cut a 2-inch hole on the side of each one so that they line up and face each other. Step2Insert the piece of chamois into the PVC pipe so that it fills the entire diameter of the pipe, and insert the pipe into the 2 holes you cut out of the plastic containers.

Step3
Attach the titanium electrodes to some electrical wire.

Step4
Attach the alligator clips to the 12V or 24V power system and to the wire that is running to the titanium electrodes.

Step5
Place a titanium electrode in each 1-gallon plastic container, and make sure the contact between the alligator clips and the wire running to the electrodes remain out of the water.

Step6
Fill the containers with water from your faucet and turn on the power adapter. This initiates the ionizing process.

Step7
Wait at least 2 hours and watch as the water separates into the 2 containers. The water in one container will turn brown and murky while the water in the other container will be clear and clean. Once the ionizing process is complete, the brown water is the acidized water and the clear water is the alkalinized water.

Here's the dope on 2x4 Tuesdays.

WildWilli posted on the Thos Jefferson subforum at RKBA Forum:

Ok folks, Here it is. I understand that there is a lot of anticipation for ways this site can be constructive. We have received tons of great ideas and we certainly appreciate them all. The thing is that there is no way we can do them all, at least not at this stage.

We decided early on that everything we did with this idea was going to be right and not necessarily fast. Sometimes, as the saying goes, speed kills. The last thing we wanted to be was a flash in the pan. We have a fantastic chance to effect change but we are flying by the seat of our pants and we have made some “in the air” corrections already due to hasty decisions. We felt that building the foundation and then growing the site was the best way to go as we are only as strong as our base. With a formidable base, we build credibility. Without credibility, we fail no matter how noble our goal.

Marches on the Capitol, State rallies, armed protests, mass demonstrations, group arrests etc. do make statements, but are they the correct statements for us at this time? We don’t think so…not yet. Not at this stage of the game or this point in time. They are logistical nightmares and extreme financial burdens for the numbers necessary to make them effective. Let me ask you a question. What was the last big, effective, awe inspiring march on D.C. that you can think of off the top of your head? When was the last one you personally remember? No fair Googling. Maybe the Million Mom March? Nowhere near a million, maybe 30K and was it really effective? No. What was it even about? How about the Promise Keepers? Did they really keep their promises and solve anything? Not really. The civil right marches of the sixties? Yeah, they worked because they were the right place and the right time but do we have to go back 50 years to find a notorious and effective one? Don’t get me wrong…marches have their place but to be effective they need the time, the place, the people and the movement to all come together in the perfect storm and strike like lightning to start the grassfire that sweeps the nation. And luck. We don’t feel the weather report brings all these components together today. Maybe tomorrow…who knows, the weather changes quickly, but not today. We will keep a close eye on the forecast though.

That brings us back to what can we do today? It is cold outside and it may snow. It starts snowing with one single snowflake. Then more and more and then it blankets the ground. It keeps on snowing, building mounds bigger and bigger until the mounds are so big that they break loose and cause the avalanche that crashes down dominating everything in it’s path. Well folks, Here is our snowflake:

In a little over a month from now, on January 20th, is the inauguration of our new President. A President who, like many in Congress, may or may not understand the true meaning of the 2nd Amendment. Allow us, ALL of us, to remind him. Some folks seriously need the "eureka" moment that happens when the power and the simplicity and the straight forwardness of those 27 little words smacks one into the reality that “shall not be infringed” means exactly what it says: SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED! PERIOD! Let us be the ones to point that out in no uncertain terms.

Many of you will remember a couple of years ago when the crisis de’ jour was the rampant flood of illegal aliens into this country via our southern border. The majority of Americans were sick of it and wanted something done about it. Anything. Polls showed overwhelming support for a wall but Congress sat on their hands. They probably still would have never done anything about it had it not been for a little campaign called “send a brick to Congress”. Tens of thousands of folks mailed a simple brick to Washington D.C. and it was by far the most powerful message ever sent to the politicians to BUILD THE WALL. It worked. It worked beautifully in its simplicity. It got press and it grew legs and more and more people sent in their “contributions”. It had never been tried before and hasn’t been tried since. Well we are going to borrow a little thunder from that movement to add to our own idea and we are going to wake up the politicians in Washington D.C. who have sworn the oath to uphold and defend the Constitution but seem to have forgotten what we feel is absolutely the most important part: namely the 2nd Amendment. So here we go:

Starting Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 and every Tuesday after that, we, and that includes you, will vow to send a specially prepared 2x4 emboldened with the 2nd Amendment to a particular individual of our (collective) choosing. We will call this campaign:

2x4 Tuesday

Every Monday, a new individual will be chosen to receive this friendly reminder. Every Tuesday, without fail, we will mail this helpful hint and delivered every Thursday (give or take a day) we will urge, in our own special way, this individual to remember those most important 27 little words they swore to uphold. We will do this in a very specific way as to let them know, without a doubt, that we mean business and we will continue until all of them have sufficiently stimulated that portion of the brain that remembers such a brief but the oh so important statement of:

A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the RIGHT of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.

It seems so simple to us but apparently it is difficult for some to understand that it does not state anything about being “reasonably infringed” or “common sensically” infringed. It says SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED! Let’s make sure they see the light and help them understand.

Here’s how you can help. Many of you have come forward and told us that you want to help in any way that you can. We are going to take you up on that offer. As you realize, everything costs money. We certainly realize it here at RIGHTtoKeepAndBearArms.com so we have come up with a way to raise much needed funds and you have a way to help us with our campaign of 2x4 Tuesday. We will make available to you, for a $5 donation to the site, a set of six placards to be attached with staples to a simple one foot section of a common 2x4. Once attached, it makes an attractive, home made, solid wood desktop paperweight. What a perfect gift for these busy little bureaucrats who have such a hard time remembering this individual right. Here is what a sample will look like:

They fit perfectly on a one foot section and that is important so that we can all say, with a common voice: “We cut off a foot to save our Arms”. That can be the rally cry of this campaign. We can all mail these special desk ornaments in the FREE 15”x11.5” Tyvek Priority Mail envelopes available at every local post office or available FREE online here: LINK

The mailing labels are also FREE and available at the post office or online here: LINK and sent directly to you at no charge.

Priority Mail is the way to go as they can deliver your 1.25# “statement” from anywhere in the lower 48 states to Washington D.C. in about two (plus or minus 1) days for a cost of $4.80 to $8.25 and do it repeatedly every Tuesday for you. We want you to include a handwritten letter with each "present" you send. We will supply you with some boilerplate letters to use for ideas but it will mean much more if every letter is unique in it’s own way and follows a few simple conventions.

First, it needs to be short and to the point. Keep in mind that the person you are sending this to is so elite that they almost NEVER open their own mail so you will actually be writing to their aide who simply keeps score of the issues for his or her boss. As was said in another thread, The K.I.S.S. principle is best and 3 paragraphs is entirely sufficient. In the first paragraph, tell them what you are going to say. In the second paragraph, say it, and in the third paragraph, tell them what you said. Long diatribes do not even get read before they are thrown away. Always be polite as an armed society is a polite society, never swear, and if you must threaten anything, make sure it is only that you will work to vote them out of a job if they cannot fulfill their oath to uphold the Constitution. Sign off with something unique like “Yours constitutionally", or "Voter #277,453" (pick your own number between 1 and 300,000,000. Also, very important - Mark the envelope "Personal and Confidential" in the lower left hand corner and always ask for a personal reply in your letter. You probably won't get one but it will be just another example of them not doing what we, their employer, ask them to do.

So, for about $10 a week, less than many people spend on lottery tickets or a couple mocha frapachinos, you can help save the 2nd Amendment with a lot more chance of return on your money and a lot less fattening than expensive coffee.

As soon as you put your first custom built paperweight kits together and insert one into these slippery Tyvek envelopes, you will see the beauty of this gift exchange. Getting one in the mail from a constituent would be curious (a snowflake). Having a mailman bring a box full of these will be an event (it’s starting to come down hard). Imagine a USPS dump truck delivering a 1000 or 10,000+ of these every week to one lucky participant in the governmental machine who desperately needs a little reminder that We, the gun owners of this great Country, will not be ignored, not be forgotten, and certainly will not stand for any more of the “common sense” legislation that makes absolutely no sense at all and goes against every grain of intent of the Founding Fathers who worked so hard to make the 2nd Amendment so easy to understand and timeless in its relevance. This is our avalanche!

Are you with us? It will only take a week or two for them to realize we are serious. The press will catch wind of it and have to report it. More will join in the campaign. It will be mentioned on popular programs like Glenn Beck, Neal Boortz, NRA News, Sean Hannity, and even the Godfather, Rush, at which point we fully expect our servers to crash but do not fear, we will revive them and this 2nd Amendment Movement will become so popular that no one in Congress or the MSM or Hollywood will ever again doubt the fervor and passion of the most determined group of individuals on this planet – the freedom loving and 2nd Amendment protecting, do something don’t just sit around and succumb to tyranny, armed and informed patriots of today. If we can associate a simple non- threatening block of wood with an armed voter and let’s face it…most of us own more than one of the 80M+ firearms in circulation, so that every time one of these anti’s looks at a framed house on their way home from work, they shudder to think of all of us voters watching every vote they cast and every backdoor deal they make against us. When a short section of wood = firearms owner, then, that is when we can march, with a 2x4 at "arms", in lockstep with all of our brother and sisters at "arms", make an extremely powerful statement while breaking no laws, carrying no weapons by definition, threatening no one and needing no battalion of lawyers to defend us, to leave our mark on the ignorance and downright freedom hating and endless unconstitutional law making machine that the government that is supposed to work for us, not against us, has become.

Are you with us? Let’s make Mondays a day to look forward to so we find out this weeks "winner" of reality, Tuesday a day of action, Wednesday the day we report in to assure our numbers are strong, Thursday the day of reckoning for the uninformed, uncaring, and unconstitutional and Friday the day everyone else in the machine wonders who it will be next week.

Are you with us? If so, send us a donation of $5 for a month and a half‘s supply of the greatest Amendment ever written. Pick up a 2x4 stud at your local home improvement store (or in this case, a life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness store) and cut it into one foot lengths, and pick up some free envelopes and mailing labels from your local post office and you have the entire kit to get ready for the “giftstorm” starting on January 20th that is going to change the way some people, who rule incorrectly, think. This is our plan, this is your movement, and it will be their lesson. Together, we are one.

Are you with us? Donations can be sent to RTKABA P.O. Box 911 Smithville, MO 64089. Order now and be sure to include your return address and we will get your 2x4 “enhancements” out in time for the first mailing come January 20th, 2009 and every week thereafter.

Are you with us?
