I recently had a minor surgical procedure – outpatient – no big deal. During my follow-up appointment my doctor said he needed to have me get a simple follow-up test to confirm that everything looked okay.

When I called to make an appointment at the radiology center my doctor prefers, I was told that my insurance wouldn't cover most of the cost at their center. Since it was my doctor's center of choice, I asked what the out-of-pocket cost would be.

The woman on the phone asked me to hold a moment, and when she came back she informed me they couldn't accept direct payment.

Excuse me? I was sure I misunderstood. You're saying I can't pay you cash money to perform the procedure you're in business to perform?

No. They wouldn't let me pay for it myself because I had insurance coverage.

Here's where you look around for the hidden camera. This is a joke, right? Please tell me we haven't come to a point where a health service will close the door in your face because you aren't covered by the insurance companies they've chosen to do business with.

It's insane! And this is just a small part of what we're up against when it comes to fixing the deep bureaucracy of our overburdened health care system.

I think that fix is going to be harder than we ever imagined.

With Universal Health Care, you won't be able to get care that isn't covered by the government. Paying for it yourself will be emphatically illegal, since any product or service whose production is under socialized/ collectivized control must be rationed: There is always a shortage of any socialized/collectivized goods/services, and when there is a shortage, there is a compelling political necessity for such goods/services to be rationed based on political considerations, not based on ability to pay.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C. S. Lewis

The useful idiots could care less.

They're too damned stooooooopid, self-centered and dependent to even understand.

I am missing some info here so my comments are indirect:

First off, any health service center that "accepts" your insurance will accept whatever your insurance company pays at your atandard co-pay - although, my ortho waves my co-pay.

Secondly, a health service provider is forbidden under any number of laws to deny you its services whether you have been referred or have insuarance or not. The terms of your insurance may require a referral tho.

Thirdly, I am unaware of any health service provider whose policy it is to accept insurance, who will not bill your out of network provider, see what they are paid and then bill you the difference.

I had a son attend school in Canada and I have had a son be twice injured over the years in hockey tourneys up there. The health care was good, quick and cheap. In one instance, he was seen, diagnosed and treated for a broken arm all in an hour and a half. Cost to me as a non_Canadian nationial was $75.00. His prescription was $12.00 or two buckk more than my co-pay.
