Consumer Reports released its annual list of best cars recently, naming the 2009 Toyota Prius as the overall best-value new car. It's in its own class in terms of fuel economy, as The Daily Green's Most Fuel-Efficient Cars and SUVs of 2009 feature shows. It bests its nearest rival (the Honda Civic Hybrid) in city driving by 20%.

But the annual report also includes a list of the most reliable used cars on the market -- reminding us that for fuel efficiency, "sticker" price, and often reliability, used cars are the best value. (The 2000 Honda Insight -- if you can find one -- achieves a combined 53 mpg, which would easily beat the 2009 Toyota Prius by a long shot.)

But buying a used car can be more challenging than buying new, for those who don't consider themselves car buffs. It takes more research (try Edmunds.com to start). How do you know you're getting a good value? And who can you turn to if something goes wrong? That's what makes the Consumer Reports list invaluable. Here you have it: 10 used cars that are likely to offer you good value for the money.

The Daily Green has done one better by ranking the small cars among Consumer Reports' picks by fuel economy. The years were chosen at random, but the fuel economy shouldn't differ within a model. (Do your own comparisons with fueleconomy.gov.)

Most Fuel-Efficient and Reliable Used Cars

2005 Toyota Echo - 31 mpg

2006 Honda Civic - 30 mpg

2005 Scion xB - 29 mpg

2007 Toyota Corolla - 29 mpg

2006 Toyota Corolla - 29 mpg

2005 Toyota Matrix - 27 mpg

2007 Pontiac Vibe - 27 mpg

2006 Mazda 3 - 26 mpg

2003 Mazda Protege - 24 mpg

2004 Subaru Impreza - 22 mpg

I found this list quite informative, and, it did not surprise me that there was only one car on this list from the so-called Big Three; the 2007 Pontiac Vibe..... which, if I am not mistaken, is no longer being made.

Move along now, no surprises here.

Factor in your 'paid for' car, and the list can change dramatically.

Don't go into debt to save false $$.

I'll stick with Ford Taurus/Sable's.. I have 3 of them and all are easy to find parts and cheap on Insurance. And with my oldest turning 16 this year, I do not fear as much, when he takes to the road.

As for MPG.. avg is 26.7 on all three..

Makes a LOT of sense to me! And so does lod!

Daniel 2:44 “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite;.

Our second is a Passat. It gets 24-27 on the highway. I had to put a new engine it it though. Passats prior to '05 have an issue with sludge building up on the pan screen which, if it gets bad enough will blow the engince from lack of oil.

I was one of the "lucky" ones.

We can drive many miles and pay for a lot of maintenance items for much less than the price of a new vehicle. And if anyone has to replace a rig, please consider the 'certified' used ones.

When fuel prices were totally nuts, my brother traded his Escalade for the Jetta diesel which he really loves at fill-up time.

The other is an X3 which gets around 20...wife loves the X3...I drive the Passat and it is second only to the Accord I had for 14 years. I'd still have that thing if the oil seals hadn't gone thanks, I believe, to Meineke screwing up installing a new clutch.

Talk about irony? Got it back on a Friday evening. Drove to a son's hockey game Saturday AM. Wife calls me as I am on Belt Parkway to tell me that there is a shitload of oil in my parking spot in front of the house. As I am talking to her BOOM. Gone.

I had nearly 200K on that thing and the only majopr repairs were 3 clutches.

Damn - what could possibly be the odds on that happening?

At this stage of the game, running through the gears is not as thrilling as it was back in the day (when I wasn't paying for the repairs.)

The same as me making it over to the shoulder right behind a franchise tow truck - which did NOT happen.
