Looks like a small possum. Did it have a scaly pink hairless tail? if so, it was a possum

man my dog has killed plenty of possum's, whenever one was stupid enough to wander into the yard she grabs it by the neck and shakes it. She has come across a mama possum with babies but, this critter was alone, holed up underground , under the grass less than a foot under.

Possums are easy to kill. Try that with a coon of any decent size and the outcome would be different.
