I didn't know cats lived that long. Always thought that 12-15 years was about average. No?

yes, that is the average for indoor cats. for outdoor cats, the average is 2-3 yrs. we lost his littermate, olivia, at age 6.5 so we feel quite blessed to have had him this much longer.

we feel quite blessed

Oliver is very handsome, indeed! My calico, Bunnie, will turn 16 this summer...still leaping around acting kittenish. She's always lived indoors, and had only the required vaccines at adoption time from the pound many years ago.

Sorry about Olivia. But it seems Oliver was given extra time to be with you.

Correct, unless you have coyotes in the 'hood, then all bets are off on how long our critters can make it.

aww thats great. he looks like a very regal character. ;-) did you say he is an inside only cat? I'm sure he is an important part of the family. Maxine is almost 14 now.

yeah since the photo is outdoors i was confused as to if he was an indoor cat. is he declawed? fixed?

and did you say above that outdoor cats live 2 or 3 years? that would be a lot shorter than i would expect. did you mean 12-13?

20 years is an incredibly long time for a cat to live. what do you feed him and do you give him shots/ vaccinations of any kind? (sorry for all the questions, but it's like when someone lives to be 120 or is married 80 years, you want to know the secret of how they did it...lol

he's on our back deck in that pic. he's a bluepoint himalayan. neutered. no vacs after the initial ones as a kitten. actually, he and his sister, olivia, both had severe allergic reactions to them so we discontinued.

no, i didn't mean 12-13. the average age of cats allowed outside is 2-3 years. there are just too many risks to cats outdoors - rabies, injuries, car accidents, fights with other animals, any number of diseases they will contract from contact with other cats, abuse from twisted individuals, danger from predators particularly coyotes.

oliver's been on Hill's prescription diet, but he gets snacks of tuna, real deli chicken, and Gerber's chicken baby food.

the reason for his longevity is that he's worshipped and adored and isn't ready to give that up. ;)
