Pittsburgh Police Officers Killed; Suspect In Custody Shooting Started As Standoff In Stanton Heights Posted: 9:50 am EDT April 4, 2009 Updated: 1:17 pm EDT April 4, 2009 PITTSBURGH -- Channel 11 News has learned that three police officers are dead after a standoff in the Stanton Heights section of Pittsburgh. Police said the suspect, Richard Poplawski, is now in custody. The incident began at about 7 a.m. Saturday morning when police responded to a domestic dispute along Fairfield Street. VIDEO: Suspect's Friend Speaks Out VIDEO: Watch 11 A.M. Police Briefing VIDEO: Police Chief Nate Harper Arrives At Scene LIVESTREAM: Stay Tuned For The 3 P.M. Police News Conference Channel 11 News reporter Rick Earle has confirmed in addition to the 3 dead, 2 other officers were injured. Sources tell Earle one of the injured officers was shot in the hand. The other broke his leg jumping over a fence. Police said more than 70 shots were fired. When police arrived on the scene, Poplawski was shooting from a window. Police returned shots. Sources tell Earle one of the officers who was killed lives in the Stanton Heights neighborhood. He was off duty at the time, but came to the house after hearing shots. That officer was a 13-year-veteran of the Pittsburgh police force. Earle reported the other two officers who died joined the force in 2007. The suspect was using 2 weapons, a long-arm rifle and an AK-47. Police sources said Poplawski was wearing a bullet proof vest. Channel 11 News has learned Poplawski was training to become a U.S. Marine at one point, but sources said he was kicked out of boot camp. He was also kicked out of North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. Police said he is 23 years old. Police sources said he came home drunk last night and got in a fight with his mother. Negotiators were able to get Poplawski to surrender. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian with injuries. No word yet on the conditions of the injured officers. A police briefing is scheduled for 3 p.m. Stayed tuned to wpxi.com and Channel 11 News for updates.

I've never seen this before. The economy goes bad and people start killing police officers. Maybe they feel in some subconcious way it's payback time for what many police have turned into -- police officers instead of peace officers, abusing instead of helping. Cops weren't the bad guys when I was a kid.

No, me either. Of course it probably helped that I grew up in a small town where everyone knew everyone else and of course everyone knew the cops (there weren't many). But now, the same small town has more cop cars than it had cops when I grew up and I don't know a one of them. Sure, the population has grown some but not so much that it "needs" so many cops.

Back then, cops weren't the revenue collectors & all around scumbags they are today.

The friend says his buddy had occasional fights with his mom, which was the cause for the cpos showing up. His friend called him and said he was going to die today. Looks like the mom told the cops that he was armed. The cops show up demanding the arms ... the kid says screw you ... the cops said "Charge" the kid wasn't fuckin around. Domestic violence calls are probably the most dangerous for cops.

I almost hate to even bring this up but a month or two ago alex jones said on air repeatedly that there will be a rash of mass shootings and that they will use that to demonize/ criminalize gun ownership. and then just like clockwork a rash of mass shootings. he does his homework and knows the patterns.

It's really becoming a potential nightmare. A few bad cops (maybe more than just a few) really put the good cops in jeopardy. And you're right, PD's need to re-evaluate their protocols and adhere to constitutional restraints. When nobody "KNOWS" what the law is somebody finds out the hard way.

I believe that unless the mother was in peril, and they knew that the kid was drunk, I'd have asked mom to call when junior had slept it off, and could be reasonably spoken with. And I don't know how, or why, the kid's weapons were a factor...hell, there are more questions than answers to this one.
Any possibility of that died at Waco, Ruby Ridge and Rainbow Farm. If .gov targets someone, they'll send wave after wave until the target is eliminated. It's going 10,000 times worse for us though.

Ping to the video above. in case you can't see the video, a 20-something red haired guy is on the street answering various reporters questions, here is a quick partial type of the transcript ----- the guy who claims to be the best friend says, He called me up and said 'Eddie im gonna die today' and i heard gunshots in the background... his cousin talked to him and got him to surrender.. his bulletproof vest prevented him from being shot in the chest. he believed in his right to bear arms he believed hard economic times were gonna put forth a gun ban. ..he basically believed in what are forfathers had put before us and thought that it was being distorted by the zionist controlled government... "he always said if anyone ever tried to take his guns he was gonna stand by what our forefathers said to do and he will defend himself... he didnt like that there was about to be military policing he didnt like there was going to be a gun ban, he didnt agree with what was going on in america..

I realize we haven't enough info yet, and what we do get will be slanted, but I simply can't get past officers not being capable of snatching a kid (one who has a past history of this) w/o all the gunfire. This current crop of cops, who have been raised on episodes of Cops, tend to use force before other tried and true methods.

And on top of that he didnt die? Some may misunderstand this, and even his alleged friend in the video above claimed that it ended badly, but i dont know what that means. if a guy said he would never let his guns be taken, and they tried to take his guns, it did not end badly it ended as planned. this was in actuality a very successsful operation, according to the outline the guy had, no?

You're right. Today, if two people have a disagreement someone's going to jail, court, and be forced to spend money on a lawyer to defend themselves or pay a fine. As a kid I saw many times the cops at the scene of a domestic squabble, calming the people down without an arrest.
