EL PASO, Texas (AP) - The El Paso County district attorney is promising reviews of about 100 drug cases presided over by a newly elected state judge now under federal indictment.

A federal grand jury in El Paso indicted State District Judge Manuel Barraza on Wednesday on four counts, including mail fraud, wire fraud and lying to a federal agent.

The 10-page indictment alleges the 53-year-old judge took cash bribes and asked for sex from defendants, including an undercover FBI agent, in exchange for his help in felony cases.

District Attorney Jaime Esparza said that the drug cases will be reviewed to determine if justice was served. If not, he tells the El Paso Times charges may be refiled.

The state has suspended Barraza from his $140,000-a-year post. He remains free on bond. (1 image)
