--- ENGLISH --- In western Mongolia, an ancient tradition of hunting with Golden Eagles is still alive. We know from history that Genghis Khan had 1,000 hunting birds - eagles, falcons and gyrfalcons - and so did Kubla Khan. There were protected areas in the steppe marked with stones where only the khans were allowed to hunt. The Kazakhs of Mongolia train their eagles to hunt and here the bird of prey is often considered a family member. The Berkutchi is a falconer who hunts with the Golden Eagle. The training of this bird was seen as difficult and even perilous even by the experienced Synchy. the bird is never a slave of its owner, only a partner in hunting. From ancient times, berkutchi-falconers in the nomadic herder societies had the role of preserving and stocking furs. The high social status of the berkutchi and his family was conditioned by the climate, as warm strong and durable clothing for the people during the winter seasons was a vital necessity. Best-suited for this were the pelts of wolves and foxes.

Well Yeh , I do believe that.

Bout two ago, a few doors up from my house I came upon a Golden Eagle ripping a rabbit apart in the neighbors front lawn.

It must have been close to three feet high and built like a Olympic wrestler.

I was about ten feet away, it gave me ONE glance; that was all I needed.

I had no thought of getting any closer to that meat slicing machine than I was.

Really, if the thing so much as jumped ten inches in my direction I would have blown out my running shoes getting away (trying to anyway) from him.

I am astonished any human has done this - my hat is off to them.

Tho I do bet many of them are missing a nose.

Amazing. I knew that falcons were used to hunt rabbits and small animals but had never heard of wolf hunting with birds.

Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end.

I've seen red-tailed hawks eating mockingbirds in my yard.

I don't know if they pick on mockingbirds by choice, or if it was just convenient.

I've already said too much.

I had a parakeet that would take on a moth. Brutal bastard bird.

I had a parakeet that would take on a moth.

That confirms when I saw a mallard duck snap up and eat a butterfly as the butterfly flew by.

I see as many as 75 hawks hanging out on a field when I plow it ... waiting for small rabbits and mice ... they go for baby rabbits ... then they fight over the food ... tractor entertainment at its best !

Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once freed. I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break in pieces.

When I was in Mongolia I saw one of these things carry away a little Asian kid in its beak, never to be seen again.

Now that I think about it, it might have been a Mongolian fly, since they are really big and have beaks and claws.

I also saw a cow eat a baby chick one time. That one really happened.

Plowing, or shredding, a field can reveal all sorts of critters that may become bird food.
