Someone has to hire them. Someone has to run the bureaucracies that feed their young and send them to college on our tax dollars when they get older. Someone has to write the policies in the think tanks that advocate these so-called laws yet to be passed, yet to be vetted by the so-called supreme court in some future case yet to be brought to trial. Someone has to direct public television specials to etch vignettes of their plight. Someone has to fund the AM talk radio in Spanish and the rallies in the name of Cesar Chavez. Someone teaches the teach-ins on open societies. Someone can't be bothered to pay a living wage. Someone maybe who thinks only of the bottom line. Someone compares Minutemen to the KKK. Someone begs the question: is America tolerant enough?

I watched "Charlie Chan at the Olympics" yesterday. What a knockout, Pauline Moore, who was in the movie. She was also in another couple of Chan movies.

My brother sent me a bunch of Charlie Chan DVDs, and a lot of them are really well restored.

"Charlie Chan at the Olympics" was from 1936, and the picture was as sharp as could be.

However, the later Chans from 1944 on, which were produced by budget studio Monogram, were grainy when they first came out and still are.

Charlie Chan at the Olympics (1937) NR Detective Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) travels to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he's on the case to track down a team of international spies and recover their secret weapon capable of controlling flying aircraft. Villains are everywhere and lead Chan, local cops and Chan's son Lee (Keye Luke) on a chase through the streets of Berlin. Actual footage of the Olympic games and the doomed dirigible Hindenburg were woven into the story line.

Netflix has it, and all the Chan movies. I highly recommend the service. It has loads of instant shows to watch plus all the DVDs Blockbuster, etc have. It's like $10 a month - well worth it.

Not that I remember.

The later Charlie Chans (1944 and later by Monogram studios) could be called racist, because they added a black chauffeur for comic relief, usually played by Mantan Moreland (but once they had Willie Best), and all the "Feets don't fail me now" type routines.

An early Chan with Warner Oland, "Charlie Chan in Egypt," had Stepin Fetchit, and his scenes were painful to watch. But I really like Mantan Moreland.
