Title: The "Al Qaeda in Iraq is resurgent and we have to stay longer" meme begins.

It started a couple weeks ago. Subtlety and imperceptibly, the usual daily violence that has never stopped in Iraq began to get more high profile coverage. Bombings began to move back to the front pages of the major newspapers. The normal violence of Iraq we have managed to ignore or that was played down during the "surge success" meme of the past election year is, golly gee, now getting more media attention.

And the recent bombing that killed 5 American soldiers in Mosul has now kicked this new Beltway line on Iraq into high gear. Of course our media passed along dutifully and without challenge how the insurgent group in Iraq who did this bombing is "linked" to "Al Qaeda". Oh, right.

Here's a question? How many Americans can name just one other insurgent group in Iraq besides the near completely fictional Al Qaeda in Iraq that even the military, in unguarded moments, has said is less than 5 percent of the insurgency? And yet, Al Qaeda in Iraq is behind every act of violence in Iraq it seems in our "free media". I would say fewer than 1 in 10,000 could do so. And why? Because Americans are stupid? No. Because these purposefully generated "memes" are successful and quite ingenious.

You see, now that DC has a new Imperator, who has proved his commitment to the status quo, safely ensconced in the oval office for at least 4 years they need to negate this silly "Iraq withdrawal" talk that Obama never intended to follow through upon to begin with. This new line on Iraq, this new Beltway media "meme", is that "we" have to stay in Iraq because "Al Qaeda in Iraq" is "resurgent."

Obama's talk of a "withdrawal" from Iraq was itself a Beltway media "meme" that I wrote about a couple months back. In that article I predicted what would eventually happen:

Of course, the situation “on the ground” will change in the interim and Obama’s “plan” will change accordingly- to keep more troops there on the 11 monster sized permanent bases being built or that already are built- and we will have forgotten all about this “pullout plan.”

We have been talking about "withdrawing" from Iraq for 6 years now and every 18 months or so all that happens is our media suddenly says "Al Qaeda is resurgent" and they kick the can for withdrawal another 24 months down the road. Go do a Google search for yourself and see how many times you can find stories about AQI (Al Qaeda in Iraq) being "almost defeated" or "on the run" and then "reborn" or "reformed" or "resurgent". This is pretty easy to do when our government and military give absolutely no quantitative information on AQI ever. Indeed, AQI is literally anyone who picks up arms against the US in Iraq. Note that in almost all stories on AQI the sources from our government are either always anonymous or if named, they give as few specifics and details as possible- much easier to not trip over future lies that way.

So this week, in the wake of the Mosul bombing that killed people with names (Americans), we see a spate of stories that are really beginning to form the new Beltway conventional wisdom on Iraq that all "mainstream" and "serious" people will spout like robots on shows like "Meet the Press": Namely- that Al Qaeda in Iraq, gosh darnit, has reformed and "proved itself versatile" once again and now, we just can't leave Iraq just yet and we will have to change Obama's withdrawal plans to meet the "new reality on the ground" accordingly.

Now, this isn't to say that our press won't report a more nuanced reality in Iraq in their back pages. One can actually read quite truthful articles in our Beltway propaganda organs. But they are generally written to just cover their own petards so they can say later that they printed challenging stories on page B32 when called out for being the day to day stenographer service for the Beltway establishment that they are. We will get blue moon stories about how AQI isn't exactly a truthful term to describe the nature of the forces arrayed against "us" in Iraq. But in general- the sound bite propaganda, the headline and first paragraph propaganda- will establish a broad "general truth" that Al Qaeda, you know- the guys who attacked us on 9/11, are powerful again in Iraq and thus it would be irresponsible to leave Iraq just yet . . . yada yada yada.

Folks, DC ain't leaving Iraq on it's own initiative . . . ever.

Good writing on the myth of AQI, a neocon staple.

You have to admire the neocons though. The less evidence they can provide for AQI actually operating in Iraq in any significant way, the more hysterically they scream that the fact we can't detect AQI is just another sign of how dangerous they really are. It's brilliant in a twisted way.

LOL, that's a keeper! Kinda like saying "the Venusians are living amongst us and the fact you don't recognize them prove they exist."
