A photo radar employee was shot to death Sunday evening when someone opened fire on the Arizona Department of Public Safety vehicle in which he was working, prompting DPS to remove all photo enforcement vehicles from their posts Monday as officials searched for the shooter.

Doug Georgianni, 51, was inside the parked DPS-owned Ford Escape, used as a photo enforcement vehicle, on the eastbound State Route 101 near 7th Avenue when the vehicle was attacked, according to DPS spokesman Harold Sanders.

DPS and police officers responded to the scene just before 9 p.m., where they found both the vehicle and Georgianni shot several times, Sanders said. Georgianni was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. DPS Director Roger Vanderpool called the shooting “senseless” and “appalling.”

The eastbound 101 was closed at Seventh Avenue until around 5:30 a.m. Monday following the shooting.

DPS and Phoenix police investigators have partnered to work on the ongoing investigation. Phoenix police released witness accounts of the suspect Monday, which described him as a White male in his 60s, with a thin face, white hair and a white mustache. He smelled of smoke.

The suspect's car is believed to be a white and gray 1980s Chevy Suburban with a roof rack and black rims and tires.

Investigators believe the suspect fled in the Suburban, exited the 101 at Seventh Street, and continued southbound, according to Phoenix police spokesman Andy Hill.

Georgianni had been working for RedFlex Traffic Systems for three months as a driver-technician.

Phoenix police asks that anyone who sees the suspect vehicle or suspect calls 911. Anyone with information about the suspect should call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (for Spanish call 480-TESTIGO.

Arrest made in killing of Ariz. radar operator

Monday, April 20, 2009

(04-20) 12:04 PDT PHOENIX (AP) --

Authorities have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man who was operating a state police photo radar unit along a Phoenix freeway, a police official said Monday.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said in a statement that detectives were questioning the suspect and that more information about the investigation would be released later Monday. He did not identify the suspect.

Doug Georgianni, 51, was shot Sunday night while collecting data inside a photo enforcement SUV along a freeway. He died later at a hospital.

Video equipment onboard the SUV, which is marked as an Arizona Department of Public Safety vehicle, recorded a vehicle investigators believe was used during the shooting. Its driver was described as a man apparently in his 60s with white hair and a white mustache.

I think our friend Bri is trying to make the case that the above description means the man was white. Silly Os.....

White Guilt drove him to it I'd bet.
