A mentally ill man died after Fort Worth police used a Taser on him, and his parents are questioning the use of the device. The man's parents called police Saturday morning to their home in the 6000 block of Alva to help them control him. Charlotte Jacobs told police her 24-year-old son, Michael Jacobs Jr., was off his medication. "They was trying to convince him to go to John Peter Smith, to get in the ambulance, but he wouldn't get in there," Jacobs said. Officers said as they tried to detain him, he became confrontational. "Officers' intentions were to do a mental application on the subject -- to take him to a hospital and get him back on his medication," police spokesman Sgt. Pedro Criado said. "Obviously, the situation escalated, and officers had to Tase the adult." Family members told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that police officers used excessive force to subdue him. Charlotte Jacobs said she watched as officers struggled with her son and then used a Taser gun on him. "He was laying flat on his stomach like that, shaking, and he was foaming out the mouth," she said. "I came out and said, 'Ya'll are killing him.'" Paramedics transported him to JPS Hospital, where he later died. His family said they wonder if different circumstances could have saved his life. "They didn't work fast enough," his mother said. "They let him lay there 20 or 30 minutes before they called the ambulance back." The police officer who used her Taser on Michael Jacobs Jr. is now on standard paid administrative leave while police investigate the incident. The Tarrant County medical examiner's office will determine what caused his death. Jacobs had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Law Enforcement Against Prohibition I will say for you what most of you are thinking: "Good. That's one less vote for Obama." As I examine last fall's election more closely, it is no doubt true that those who plotted to bring slaves to America 400 years ago inadvertently provided the margin of victory for the Democratic Party in 2008. The weathy brought slaves to America for cheap labor and because white indentured servants keeled over working in the heat. Now we are suffering because of their greed. Now they're tryng to bring Mexican indentured servants to America, again as cheap labor, and now we're sufferng from them/ St. Paul was right: "The lust [not "love"] of money is the root of all evil."
Murder. They left him to die. The crime will go unpunished in this life. In fact I bet they get a commendation and maybe a promotion shortly. Mitchell, who had no criminal record, was riding in a car that was stopped by the Warren Police on April 10. Mitchell was with an older relative after they had repaired a tire for his aunt at a neighborhood gas station. They then offered a ride to a young woman who had missed her bus to get to work. They were pulled over in Warren, a suburb of Detroit, by police. The passengers in the vehicle were ordered face down on the ground by the Warren Police while the vehicle was being searched. According to eyewitness reports, Robert Mitchell ran from the scene and was chased into the City of Detroit. He took refuge in an abandoned home and was pursued by police. The police officers brought him out of the abandoned home on Pelkey street on the east side of the city. He was then taken back into the abandoned house and tased by the officers. He then passed out and later died. One of the passengers in the vehicle where Robert was riding said that police told her that the youth had “fainted.” Family Demands Justice Robert Mitchell’s family is not satisfied with the explanation provided by the Warren Police. The family, along with the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality (DCAPB), held a candlelight vigil in honor of Mitchell on April 12. The event was covered widely by the local television and print media in Detroit. Later that week, family members and supporters within the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality (DCAPB) attended a Warren City Council meeting and demanded the termination of the Warren Police officers involved in the death of Mitchell and that the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office file charges against the cops who had crossed over into Detroit where Mitchell died. On April 20 Mitchell’s family filed a wrongful death civil suit against the City of Warren in federal court for an undisclosed amount. A memorial service was held for Mitchell on April 18 at Second Ebenezer Church on the city’s east side. Hundreds of family members and friends of Mitchell attended the services and expressed their grief over the incident. The family pledged to continue the fight to have the officers fired and prosecuted. “He was the storyteller of the family,” said Ramell Savage, 14, one of Mitchell’s three brothers. He was described as a normal teen who loved sports and music, family members said. Ron Scott, spokesperson for DCAPB, said that “tasers are not non-lethal weapons, they kill. This is why the DCAPB mounted a successful campaign several years ago to ban the use of tasers by the police in the City of Detroit. However, suburban police departments are using this weapon and there have been two deaths recently after this weapon was utilized.” Warren Mayor Jim Fouts questioned whether the police should continue to use tasers. He called for an independent investigation into whether the weapons are safe.
