36,000 a year in the U.S. die from the flu, and it not considered an epidemic Now, swine flu has killed a fraction of that, and the foolish are babbling like it's 1918 again.

More people die from car wrecks than from the flu.

AIDS was gonna kill us all off, and it turns out it's a fag and IV drug user disease.

I pay very little attention to any of it. I don't believe anything I read, and less of what I hear.

After 9-11, I had a woman in a store tell me than then the WTC fell, one guy on top surfed his way down on the collapsing building. I told her that was impossible, and she acted offended.

The sheeple are idiots and will believe anything. The bigger the lie, the more likely they are to believe it.

Using new and improved statistical models, CDC scientists estimate that an average of 36,000 people (up from 20,000 in previous estimates) die from influenza-related complications each year in the United States. In addition, about 11,000 people die per year from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a virus that causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections primarily in young children and older adults. The study demonstrates that most deaths caused by RSV occur in the elderly.

==================================

The Spanish flu killed between 50 to 80 million around the world in 1918, including many Americans.

That is a pandemic.

The 36,000 flu-related deaths you refer to is not.

Do you see the difference?

The stories about swine flu will disappear in a few months, just as stories about bird flu did.

I used to be a newspaper editor. I know how the media works. "If it bleeds it leads." It doesn't matter in the slightest if the story is true or not.

As I just said, the sheeple are idiots, and the bigger the lie, the more likely that are to fall for it.

Naivety rules, misinformation is how it does it.

The problem is many-fold.

What we can agree on is that the threat of a pandemic coming up from Mexico (plus a whole helluva lot of other things) could be controlled if we had a border.

There are no borders in the modern world. You act as though some sort of omnipotent GOD called called "government" can save you; that idea is laughable, at best.

The spread of diseases can not be controlled by "check-points" with armed guards [with the singular exception of Israel whom brings the world to war each and every day we wake up to.]

The way I remember reading about it, a small percentage that caught that flu died from it, which was not much higher than the "regular" flu. The problem was, it was so much more contagious that that 50-80 million dead was only at about the same percentage that die from the regular flu.

I could be wrong though. If I am, someone will enlighten me.

I wonder how many Americans were killed just yesterday during carjackings, home invasions or robberies? That seems to never lead on the federal media.

It depends on what country you came back from.

Which one was it?

The situation is dynamic and changes almost by the hour.

He added however, that it was prudent of governments to advise nationals to stay away from infected areas.

Last night, WHO raised its alert level on the swine flu epidemic to phase four.

This decision was based mainly on data showing human-to-human transmission and the ability of the virus to cause community level outbreaks.

Hartl described the current state of alert as a turning point.

The infection rate could remain at current levels or slow down.

The highest level of alert, phase six would mean sustained out breaks in more than one region and be characterized as a pandemic.

That would trigger the production of anti- swine flu vaccines, Hartl said.

The WHO spokesman explained however that beginning vaccine production against swine flu would probably mean suspending the manufacture of vaccines against normal flu viruses.

At the moment, existing anti- viral drugs have been proven effective in treating swine flu.

Despite its name, Hartl emphasized that the disease is spread between humans and is not caused by eating pork. Cooking pork or any meat well kills all viruses, he said.

According to the world health organization, laboratory tests have so far confirmed a total of 79 swine flu cases; these include 40 in the United States, 26 in Mexico, 6 in Canada, 3 cases in New Zealand, 2 cases in the United Kingdom and one case in Spain. WHO says it can only confirm 7 deaths as a result of the virus.

I could be wrong though. If I am, someone will enlighten me.

The flu in general was more dangerous then, and that one was a doozy. My great uncle Joe had it, along with most of his family, and he sat semi-conscious in a tub of cold water for days.

What was so different about this flu was not just the mortality but the mortality pattern. It disproportionately killed able-bodied young and middle-aged men. Normally, it is the very young or very old who die from the flu. The mortality was probably the result of the flu when combined with undiagnosed tuberculosis, as suggested by the (lagged) reduction in TB deaths.

Everything lasts and everything ends. Longer than our children could ever imagine, faster than we could ever imagine. Children are the stuff of life; god was right to deny us immortality.

It (Spanish Flu) disproportionately killed able-bodied young and middle-aged men.

=========================

This triple strain (swine, bird, and human) hasn't been seen before. They don't know WHAT it will do, or HOW FAR it will spread yet.

It is practically still just coming OUT OF INCUBATION.

So far, those most susceptible are not the elderly, but children and adults under the age of 30.

I agree. And that is what I dont understand. What is it about young healthy people that makes this so dangerous? What about the older and unhealthy ones? Could it be a lifestyle thing?

Healthy young people come in contact with more people so maybe it's still a small percentage that die, but because more of them get sick then that means more deaths. But what you said makes sense too, regarding TB + the flu.

I know what it's like to be knocked on my ass by the flu. I lost about 10 lbs in a little over a week. Thank God that doesn't happen often. I'd like to lose 10 lbs per week, but not like that.

What is it about young healthy people that makes this so dangerous?

Concerning mortality, as far as I can tell, young is in evidence, healthy is questionable.

This is Mexico we're talking about.

It'll be interesting to see what, if anything it does in Asia. Asia and Latin America are the two big TB reservoirs. Asian immigrants actually have a higher TB rate.

Everything lasts and everything ends. Longer than our children could ever imagine, faster than we could ever imagine. Children are the stuff of life; god was right to deny us immortality.

Glad you had a great time in Holland (beautiful country).

Having 'sped' through that many (small) countries had to have taken you at least 3 or 4 days, which during that time the dynamic scenario has constantly changed.

Just since you've been home, Europe has reported new H151 cases.

Look here and you'll get a better idea, without having to trust what some stranger on a blog has to say about it.

One person has died in the U.S. of swine flu - a two-year-old Mexican.

First the Huns were going to conquer the world, then the Nazis, then the Communists, then the Japanese, then the Chinese, then Muslims. In the '70's we were going to freeze from global cooling, now it's global warming. AIDS was going to wipe out half the world, along with starvation and pollution. Then it was bird flu. Now it's swine flu.

I don't believe any of it.

What I do believe, because it's happening and the media does not report on it, is all the diseased Third Worlders invading this country. And I don't mean the flu. I mean all kinds of hideous dieases the media never reports -- like TB that can barely be cured, and costs a million dollars if it does work.
