Many people feel that way about "effete, long haired rock & rollers". Although I couldn't sing that high except in falsetto (darn it!) I was a real long hair "back when the universe had some meaning" (thanx Tommy Chong) and I enjoyed the "perks" (goils goils goils) and suffered the insults from the passing hillbillies. It was kinda funny to see those guys with greasy long hair 20 years later, and some even had mullets and ear rings! And, I ask you, who looks more queer, a long haired rocker or a tanned, pro wrestler in gold short-shorts and with long bleached blond hair? It reminds me of Travis Tritt's attack on Billy Ray Cyrus years ago when Billy had Achy Breaky Heart on the charts. Travis fired the first shot across Billy's bow and accused him of being "not kuntree". I watched Billy's video and the wimmen screamin for him as he did his little "heart broke hip swing" ("when mah heart's broke I gotta move mah hips just like this!") and I thought, "Travis has a point" But, then about two weeks ago I saw something I'd never seen before. It was Travis Tritt's original video, I'm a Member Of a Country Club when he was really young, wearing a faggy "hide the hickies" bandanna, his hair teased and his lips all moist and glossy, and then I tried to find that video online. (to post it here) Well, guess what? There are several live versions of it but not that one where Travis looks like a Midnight Cowboy or a dreamboat redneck prison bitch! And, I'll bet money that Travis himself had the video pulled from all the usual places (CMT, GAC, VHI, etc) and after what he said about Billy Ray I can't say that I'd blame him if he did! As far as guys with high voices go, well, Vince Gill is the high priest of country music and deservedly so. But I suppose if you put that voice with Carrie Underwood's hair it could make some Butch boys (especially those with strict fathers or those with no fathers who were "looked after" by scout masters, Sunday School teachers and men in every other position of trust who are predatory pedophiles) very insecure about their sexual orientation. ("He's kinda cute. Oh MAH GAWD, AM AH A GODDAM DIRTY QUEER? COULD DEWIN' SHEEP MAKE ME A FAG?") I've sometimes wondered if guys who are uncomfy looking at "long haired musicians with high voices" won't be suing their archdiocese someday.... After all, long hair on men is as old as recorded history as are all male choirs where the castrato sang the female mezzo-soprano parts. I don't know if the Castrati were queer, but I'd bet that the Church officials who thought it was a good idea to maim young boys "to glorify God" were seriously fucked up, and in more ways than one.

That was a pretty good rant about long hair, but I never mentioned hair, did I? I just said he looks and sings like a girl, which he does. Frank Zappa had a good time poking fun at Punky Meadows way back when: Too bad the youtube video of his song Punky Whips is gone. Someday it will be back and I will post it here for posterity.
