I received an email from Esso (Jim) this morning. He was involved in a very serious car accident last night. It was a head on collision. Jim's car is totaled. He sustained a fractured sternum, lacerated spleen, the doctor's suspect heart damage and internal bleeding.

Jim is one of the most unselfish, generous, good hearted men I have ever met. I think the world of him.

Please think healing thoughts or prayers of a speedy recovery for him.

I just spoke to Jim. He's been discharged as he's able to walk and they've done all they can do for him. His cellphone was crushed, so he's going to Verizon to get another. Jim said he's in much pain due to the horizontal fracture of his sternum. More later....

Thank you, everyone, for the kind words.

Here's what happened: At about 6:00pm on Tuesday I was travelling northbound on Maplecrest Road in the company 2007 Honda Fit wagon. I approached the stoplight at Lake Avenue which was green to continue on northbound. The turn arrow for northbound traffic to proceed west on Lake was also activated. The northbound turn arrow went to solid green (yield for turn) and both southbound lights went solid green (proceed straight, yield for turn eastbound).

When that happened, the driver in the southbound lane turning east must've thought it was a green arrow and darted into the intersection directly in my path about 30 feet in front of me. I was travelling 40-45mph (speed limit 45) and slammed directly into them head-on.

The event probably lasted about a quarter of a second. I didn't even have time to lift my foot off the gas. The last thing I remember was the initial sound of the crunching metal then I was out.

When I came to, the police, fire trucks and ambulances were there. I knew I was hurt pretty badly. The firemen removed my coat in the car and slid me out onto the backboard and strapped me onto it and taped my head down. A cop got in my face and told me it was pretty obvious that the other driver was at fault and not to worry, I would be taken care of. Into the ambulance I went.

Enroute to the Parkview Trauma Center, they went to work on me cutting my clothes off, right down to my boxer-briefs, hooked up their electrical DooDads to me and worked me over with their tools of the trade. At that point, I was alert, lucid and able to answer all of their questions and monitor my vital statistics.

My blood pressure was running about 200 systolic, pulse was in the high 100s, glucose was high, cardiac rhythm was OK. The high readings were probably caused mostly by shock and fright.

They got me to the hospital and did their hospital stuff. Bottom line: Fractured sternum, lacerated spleen, just about all my internal organs showed signs of stress from the impact, but not too much internal bleeding. The only visible injuries were a small scrape on my left pinky and my right knee. They took me up to the room, hooked up their monitors, IVs, etc. They started me on pain killers and Pepcid. Trying to sit up caused me much dizziness but it passed. I tried to sleep, but they had pressure cuffs on my lower legs that would inflate and deflate every minute or so which kept me awake all night.

The next morning some young cocky punk doctor came in and I told him I wanted the hell out of there. He told me I couldn't even walk and needed to stay longer. I told him of course I couldn't walk with all their tubes and wires hooked to me and to take them off and I'd walk. He did and I did. Then he said I wouldn't be released until I ate something and was able to keep it down. I ate and was fine. I was released about 1:00pm Wednesday.

I am one, hurting sumbitch. Any upper body movement causes a shearing pain in me that about makes me pass out. Mundane tasks such as putting on my socks is a lesson in pain. Bending, twisting and lifting are out for awhile. Walking isn't too bad. The painkillers they gave me don't seem to help the pain much, but they sure make me feel crappy and tired. I'm going to try to get into my GP tomorrow, my fingers started going numb today, that has me a little concerned.

All-in-all, I'm doing OK. Your kind words mean a lot to me.

Thanks,
Jim

Edit: I saw the Honda yesterday and recovered my belongings out of it. The car is totaled. The entire front end of the car is destroyed and twisted badly. The engine is pushed into the firewall, windshield is broken from the unibody distortion. Driver's side front airbag is deployed. The driver's side B column is distorted and the seatbelt is destroyed. There is a lot of damage to the inside of the car from the G forces. The impact turned my reading glasses into a pretzel, and my fancy new metal e-cigarette which was sitting on the passenger seat was broken in half and badly dented. My cellphone which was clipped to my belt was nonfunctional. And I just filled up the goddamned gas tank that morning. Dammit.

Prayer for Healing

Lord, look upon me with eyes of mercy, may your healing hand rest upon me, may your lifegiving powers flow into every cell of my body and into the depths of my soul, cleansing, purifying, restoring me to wholeness and strength for service in your Kingdom. Amen.

Prayer for Healing

O God who are the only source of health and healing, the spirit of calm and the central peace of this universe, grant to me such a consciousness of your indwelling and surrounding presence that I may permit you to give me health and strength and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Sick

Omnipotent and eternal God, the everlasting Salvation of those who believe, hear us on behalf of Thy sick servant, N., for whom we beg the aid of Thy pitying mercy, that, with his bodily health restored, he may give thanks to Thee in Thy church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Healing Scriptures

The following scripture passages have the power to bring healing and strength to your heart, mind, body, soul and spirit. Meditate on them day and night. Allow God to speak to your situation through his written Word. Accept the Word of God as if the Lord himself were speaking directly to you. Take what is being said deep into your heart.

Allow your faith to grow to the point where you can command the mountain of sickness, hardship and despair out of your life. For according to Mark 11:23– 24, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

No, not really. I asked the ambulance attendants if anyone else was hurt. and they said no, they refused treatment. I asked if any children were involved and they said no again.

I'll probably go downtown Monday and get the police report and see what it says. I don't know anything about what is being claimed by the other driver or witnesses, if any.

Go ahead, OM. I'm not up for much jostling around right now. Last night, one of my gal friends went to hug me which was not what I needed right then. When I got home, I sat down on the couch and laid down on my side. When I did, this intense shear of pain went through me, my vision when went pure white like someone shining a spotlight in my eyes, I had this wave of intense dizziness and nausea come over me, I thought I was going to throw up which would be damned painful. I won't be doing that again anytime soon.

Now if you happen to know of a good nursemaid (thin, beautiful, smart, 29-42) to help me get my socks on & off, we'll talk. If you're wondering, I'm 52 and can afford to be picky. Damned picky.

Hmmm.... Must be one of these:

1.Geography .
a) a great circle of the earth passing through the poles and any given point on the earth's surface.
b) the half of such a circle included between the poles.
2.Astronomy . the great circle of the celestial sphere that passes through its poles and the observer's zenith.
3.a point or period of highest development, greatest prosperity, or the like.
4.(in acupuncture) any of the pathways in the body along which vital energy flows.
adjective
5.of or pertaining to a meridian.
6.of or pertaining to midday or noon: the meridian hour.
7.of or indicating a period of greatest prosperity, splendor, success, etc.

My guess is #3 or #4.

Almost 20 years while in my Eagle Talon I broadsided an SUV that was travelling the opposite direction but went to make a U-turn right in front of me. I had no airbag, but my seatbelt was on.

Car was totalled... Front end was maybe 1.5 feet shorter than it was before, but I felt okay immediately afterwards. About 2 weeks later couldn't swing a baseball bat. Discovered how wonderful the treatment of chiropractic can be. Took several months of that, and needed more sessions a few years later. I think the seat belt's single point of restraint across the center of my chest was the reason, which caused strain & micro damage at that point on my backbone. Perhaps the airbag served you a bit better.

Keep chiro in mind, starting in maybe a month. Thanks for the report.

Fractured sternum

It sounds like someone did CPR chest-compressions while you were unconcious. That can result in broken sternums and possibly heart bruising. Broken sternums can take 10-24 weeks to heal. Something like these elastic supports might help reduce the pain:

Elastic Rib Belt

Rib Belt / Chest Support

For nausea from pain, try peppermint tea or candy, ginger ale pop or ginger root tea, or coca cola syrup (namebrand example: Flents) sold at drugstores.

Edited for spelling.

How to Treat Sternal Fractures - eHow

6. Do not expect to have the injured sternum wrapped or placed in any type of cast as would be done with a fractured arm or leg. It is believed that the best healing occurs when you are able to breathe and move regularly rather than in a restricted manner.

8. ...support the area as well as you can so that movement is not excruciatingly painful.

Seat belts are often the cause of sternal fractures (although they prevent much worse injuries from occuring

6 and 8 seem contradictory.

My best guess is that the air bag did in Esso's sternum.

My best guess is that the air bag did in Esso's sternum.

You might be right. They can cause severe injuries and if they can break a windshield, like this site mentions, I suppose they could break bones too:

Did I Fracture My Sternum?

In the Comments section there, someone wrote that wrapping a sternum injury can cause pneumonia. They also wrote that they still had chronic pain two years later. Maybe not wrapping is why. Another person said that hiccups caused them extreme pain. As long as someone isn't diabetic, I think some sugar on the tongue might help to stop hiccups quickly.

Back when, a horse and I went down resulting in fractured ribs and a punctured lung which put me in the hospital, flat on my back for a week.

Things like this take serious bed-rest to heal.

Rest is best, no doubt. Did you have to have surgery? Did they wrap your ribs back then or not?

Not a helluvalot can be done for a sternum!

One idea: Apply dmso. Might speed healing.

My career is most likely over. The limits of her liability insurance might cover a year and a half of my salary. Her auto medical insurance is probably already near the limits then my car insurance takes over and will probably will exhaust itself quickly at which time my health insurance takes over and will also probably hit the million dollar lifetime limit. Xxxxx is saying rehabilitation may take years. I hope to hell he's wrong.

People here are telling me how lucky I am to be alive and should be grateful for it. I'm not so sure about that.

Jim, I have been worried about you. You are going to have to take it very easy on yourself for a while.

Her liability insurance may not be all that she has. If she has any assets it is likely that she has an umbrella policy. Also, look into the uninsured/under insured policy on the vehicle you were driving. Were you in a company vehicle? There are generally umbrella and under insured coverage available for this sort of incident.

Give your self and your body much needed rest. Folks are right that it is a blessing that you are alive. You have more to do and you will get through this. Remember, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger and everything happens for a reason, even the crappy things. We are all sending you prayers and best wishes.

Jim, believe me when I tell you, your recovery is largely in your hands. You are still young enough to bounce back from this set back. It won't be easy; I couldn't get out of bed unassisted for two weeks when I went down, but I soon decided to become the physical therapist's best patient. I realize this might seem a long way off for you now, but may I suggest you make it your goal too?

Beat whatever is in front of you, you survived for a reason.

Peace brother.

Don't give up the ship.

All joking aside, one of the reasons I am still here is that, among my many vices, I am stubborn as hell.

Don't let a little reversal get you down. Look for ways to keep busy and enjoy life. Life is good. I have my artwork and music, and I need to get back to writing.

However, the greatest jewel of all is having friends that care.

Be well, and get well.

Aye, you are in a bad way. I always want to help those in suffering. Alas... This is one of those things. If you have Keegan water or know someone with a Keegan machine... IF ANY OF YOU READING THIS HAS A KEEGAN WATER FILTER Maybe take to esso for three to eight weeks :). The Keegan thing makes cleaner better water that honestly can stimulate and accelerate healing. However the Keegan people are remarkably proud of their expensive device. ....

Otherwise only rest and light movement will make you right.... I wish I could offer more or do more. Your road maybe hard but you're alive , you get to keep all your limbs, no permeant brain damage requiring short busses and caretakers... I am very glad you felt strong enough to update us. Rest easy and know our prayers and love is with you. May Christ be with you.

I've been absent so I was late getting the news but, thank you, chris for alerting us (and me) about the accident..

And, Jim, having re-broken the same poorly knitted rib three more times in twenty years and having it nick my lung and result in a nasty infection the last time, I can only sympathize with what must be considerably more discomfort than I endured. (It required surgery to clean out the messy 4-inch thick infection hanging on my lung and finally repair the rib)

The worst part was waking up and discovering that a balloon catheter was inserted after I went under. (There were only women in the super chilly OR!)

But, seriously Jim, I have two things to recommend; OXYCONTIN and COD LIVER OIL. The injury to your sternum will require heap big medicine so you can sleep, and the CLO will greatly minimize the constipation that narcotics often cause.

The new (brand med) OXYCONTIN contains something to minimize off label abuse, i.e., crushing and shooting and/or snorting and I've been told that some people have complained about the pills passing through without even dissolving. When I took the original compound they were the most effective oral med and you could have cut my head off with a chainsaw without me feeling much. And, they ain't cheap even with prescription coverage, but at least try them if you require serious amelioration of any pain.

Please don't be afraid to ask your doctor for what you want. All MDs are so gun shy these days (thanks to the FEDs who would rather shoot pain patients than permit the freedom to self medicate) that you'll end up seriously under-medicated (with 5 mg Percocet) if you don't assert your need for relief.

Managing our health in general and moderate to severe long term pain in particular is a partnership and there's no reason for anyone to suffer when relief is readily available. (We aren't sheep and we don't seek treatment from Vets)

If the med you have ain't makin' it then call the doctor immediately! Don't wait until it's time for a refill.

I am so sorry to learn of your accident and despite the fact that it could have been worse, it's not unusual for soft tissue injuries (i.e., neck and back muscles) to manifest days or even weeks after the initial trauma. And your sternum injury may granulate fairly slow and not without regular reminders not to roll over,, roll your shoulders forward, breathe, etc.,.

I'll feel better if I know that you or better yet an assertive advocate is seeing to your needs. And, you may want to use a driver and protect yourself with a large, firm pillow when riding shotgun in the unlikely event of another airbag deployment.

Please take care.

_JimDAWG

Nausea and white flashes may have been indications of concussion. Given everything else that happened it's hard to nail those symptoms down to just that. Lod's advice to see a GP was spot on.

I swear this is true.

This last Halloween about 11:00 PM some young lady ran through my neighborhood screaming ODIN repeatedly at the top of her lungs. As near as I could tell, it went on for about 15 - 20 minutes.

It had not happened before or since.
