Diamonds are not that rare. Their use in wedding rings was the result of a marketing campaign by the De Beers long ago, and the tradition has stuck. Real precious stones, for their rarity, are rubies and emeralds.

A friend of mine who's knows about this bought his fiance a ruby engagement ring.
