The UAW's strike has caused 46,000 workers at 34 plants nationwide to step off the job so far.

46,000!! Drop in the bucket. In the 50s and 60s an auto strike was a big deal.

How much do they get paid when on strike? does the Union subsidize them?

They only strike against key facilities which forces the auto company involved to lay off the rest of the union work force which makes them eligible for unemployment insurance.
