Affordable housing among striking Chicago teachers' demands

CHICAGO (AP) — Striking Chicago teachers who are seeking smaller class sizes and higher pay also are demanding that the nation's third-largest city do more to lower housing costs and put more resources into helping homeless students.

The demand for affordable housing citywide — for students and their financially-strapped families as well as for school employees — stands as a dramatic example of organized labor's effort to expand bargaining beyond bread-and-butter issues.

The pursuit is part of the union's "social justice" agenda and is a unique departure from standard negotiating tactics. Despite early rejection by city officials, teachers argue that the issue belongs on the bargaining table.

After months of negotiating , the Chicago Teachers Union's 25,000 members began striking Thursday along with thousands of support staff.

Talks that continued through the weekend and into Monday made some progress but didn't resolve key disagreements, including teachers' demands for stricter class size limits and more support staff in schools, and classes remained canceled for more than 300,000 students.

The union on Monday also flatly rejected Mayor Lori Lightfoot's request to return to classrooms while contract talks continue.

Neither side has spoken publicly about any discussion of the affordable housing issue during bargaining sessions. But the union has made clear that the issue is an important one for its membership.

Chicago is certainly not the only U.S. city where the issue of affordable housing for teachers and other school employees is significant. But Robert Bruno, a professor of labor and employment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said he doesn't know of any other cities in which the issue has pushed its way into contract negotiations.

He said that's because the chasm continues to grow nationwide between teachers' salaries and the cost of affordable housing at a time when urban school districts also are having an increasingly difficult time recruiting and retaining teachers.

"Teacher unions around the country are watching this very closely," Bruno said.

I think all the schools in the south and west sides have TSA style metal detectors at all the entrances. That's why we never hear about black kids shooting up schools.

Strangely enough, the CTU pension fund was the only one that did not lose money.

Other funds like the State Employees Retirement System (SERS) had to give their members a 20% cut since the fund made poor investments. ;)

I just looked on Zillow, unless you want to live in the gold coast, Chicago housing prices looked pretty reasonable. Some great deals if you have the skills to un-ape the property.

That guy is dead a very long time. He was murdered by the Puerto Ricans. :-/

I knew a guy that was a guard at the Cook County Jail. When the news hit that MLK, Jr had been killed, they cancelled the leaves for all the guards.

One black guard since he had a good job, he was able to get a mortgage on a 4-flat. He lived on 2nd floor.

He opened the door to go to work and there was a black guy standing on the landing below. He was ready to light a Molotov Cocktail.

He said to him, "Whatchoo think you doing?"

The black guy said, "I'll show whitey. I'm gonna burn down this building."

The Deputy pulled his pistol and killed him right where he stood.

My friend asked him, "How are you going to explain that?"

The black Deputy said, "When they come along and pick him up, it's just another dead nigger."

The good blacks call the bad blacks niggers too. ;)

Just one of the THOUSANDS of ways they rob us, from having to leave our lights on to dissuade burglars to suffering home invasions and race riots.

A guy I knew lived in like Seattle -- somewhere up thar. A crazed nignog stood on top a bldg in a busy downtown and sprayed humans with bullets. That one incident KILLED that entire area's commerce. How many whole downtowns have they stolen from us? I remember pre-riots Plainfield.... and weep.

It's amazing how quickly things have devolved. In 2014 I probably would have scoffed at the idea that the entire public education apparatus was such a transparent shakedown. Screw it, at this point granting school charters to the Latin Kings and the Blackstone Rangers would be one hell of a lot more honest, and I have no doubt the captives would receive a better education under such an arrangement.

True, but the thing is how much of the damage done by Obummer could Trump fix simply by reversing his Executive Orders?

Besides that, even though the Republican controlled both houses of Congress, how much could he accomplish with the regular party members with all the Neocons looking to sabotage his efforts?

We must remember one thing, Trump as POTUS has the right to regulate just about anything he wishes. But most things need to be handed off to other departments. ;)

A good President will have many knowledgeable advisors close at hand and ready to tell him what needs to be done. And giving Obummer's unlawful E.O.s the axe is a step in the right direction.

I vote to grant school charters to the SDF/State Defense Forces aka the Militias of the States. Military Academies would be much better geared towards teaching an appreciation of our Constitution and country than public schools have been, imo.
