A rare October snowstorm blankets the Texas Panhandle

Heavy snow fell in parts of the Texas Panhandle on Thursday, causing near whiteout conditions in Amarillo, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents posted videos of the rare October snow storm on social media that show their fall decorations and pumpkins covered in white flakes.

Snow is uncommon for Amarillo this time of year but not unheard of, according to CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward.

"The earliest measurable snow on record is September 29, 1984," said Ward. "The earliest in the season that they have ever had 1"+ is October 15, 1970."

One person even captured the phenomenon "thundersnow," the combination of snow and a thunderstorm, and shared the video on Twitter.

The preliminary snow reports show that 4 inches of snow fell five miles west of Amarillo, according to the NWS. They said that the largest drifts at their office in Amarillo range between 10 and 12 inches.

People weren't the only ones going outside and enjoying the rare storm; a pup named Maggie ran around her backyard in Amarillo and dug her nose in the fresh snowfall.

The Panhandle will continue to get snow throughout the evening, but it should wind down by midnight, according to Ward.

"By the time it's done, a few spots could end up with around six inches," said Ward.

Of course I can recall when driving the big truck, we were going under a low clearance viaduct. My co-driver was checking the clearance.

He said, "You got about 4 inches."

I said, "Speak for yourself." ROTFLMAO!

Ha ! I worked in it yesterday as I needed to drain water truck tanks just west of Adrian, Texas, (which is a few miles from my house). It was a blizzard/white-out.

The sun is entering a cooling cycle. Whether or not that means earth will experience another mini-Ice-Age is not yet known.

It was a blizzard/white-out.

I've been thru those when plowing for State of Illinois. It was so bad the blowing and drifting snow would close up the road half an hour after you went thru there. Once the road is dry the snow blows across it. When we went out tandem plowing in a big storm, traffic would follow right behind us.

And then one time we were driving the big truck, we were stuck at a Sapp Bros. Truck Stop in Evanston, Wyoming for 2 days during a blizzard.

When we got out of there we had to go straight to the drop in California.

Driving thru the State of Nevada you could hear the whore houses on the CB radio, 'Drivers, stop in for a quick one." My co-driver was married so even if we had time, we likely would not have stopped. ;)

Hope they had good heat in that truxtop. They keep a big heater behind the counter at my local BP during winter.

We only went in there to eat or use the rest room. Or we would sit in the drivers lounge and watch whatever movie was playing. ;)

Would imagine whatever food there was ran low pretty quick -- but mebbe they were used to that kind of situation.
