‘Perhaps the lowest October temperature ever recorded’ in continental U.S.
Meteorologist Paul Dorian: "Perhaps the most amazing temperature recorded in this unusual cold spell for the western US took place earlier today in the remote observing station of Peter Sinks, Utah...the unofficial overnight low temperature there of -43.6 ºF is pretty amazing for this time of year and perhaps the lowest temperature ever recorded in the Lower 48 during the month of October. Nearby Salt Lake City, Utah provided some supporting evidence of the extreme cold as it set a low temperature record of 14 ºF for the date and records there go all the way back to 1874.

A winterlike storm continued to unload snow over the Midwest on Thursday, making Halloween feel more like Christmas in many areas and leading to a 96-year-old snowfall record being shattered in Chicago.
The same storm system that brought snow and cold to the Rockies earlier this week tracked across the central United States into early Thursday morning, unleashing heavy snowfall, fierce winds and brutal cold. Moderate to heavy snowfall will occur from eastern Iowa, northeastern Kansas, Illinois and southern Wisconsin as the storm strengthens throughout the day Thursday.
Up to 5 inches of snowfall had already buried parts of Iowa on Thursday morning, leaving roads in central and eastern parts of the state snow-covered and slick, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT). By 1:30 p.m. CDT, a NWS cooperative observer had reported 7 inches of snow in Lowden, Iowa, northwest of Davenport.
Earlier Thursday morning, the Des Moines airport recorded 1 inch of snow, marking the first time Des Moines has had two snowfalls over 1 inch in the month of October, according to the NWS.
