The militias had been fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The US had been bombing the militias to protect ISIS. The militias finally had enough of the US dropping bombs on them.

Where were the missiles fired from? If this is going to be like Vietnam, the missiles can be set up piecemeal and launched any time and place from almost any location. ;)
