A Local State Trooper Puts His Life in Danger to Save a Family of Bears

Unfortunately, even wild animals need help from civilians once in a while.

However, even when you see an animal in need of help, how many of us actually know what to do? And it’s even harder when the animal is a wild American Black Bear!

Bears are intelligent and fascinating to observe but they can also be very dangerous if you come close to them.

But, when one local state trooper saw a family of bears in need, he decided to do much more than just observe — and it took an unexpected turn!

Let’s explore how this local officer created a life-saving experience from just one courageous act of kindness.

What’s in the Middle of the Road?

Driving along the road, the police officer was coming up to a turn in the path. As he turned the corner, his eye got caught of something peculiar. The closer he got, the more alert he became. He needed to stop before he would hit what was right in front of him. Panicking to halt in time, he hit the brakes as quickly as he could.

Officer Owens couldn’t believe his eyes – from a distance, he had seen several animals. As he got closer, he realized that directly in front of his car was a family of bears.

A Rare Occurrence

We all have seen those yellow street signs with black animal figures on them while driving in nature, right? Depending where in the country you are, it could be for deer, ducks, or even bears!

But it’s one thing to know that there is a chance to run into an animal, and another thing to actually experience it happening.

This state trooper was overwhelmed at this rare occurrence. He was trained to remain calm in stressful situations, but he was wondering to himself where these bears came from, and how many were there anyway?

Crossing the Street

The bears were directly in front of the police officer’s vehicle. They were all crossing the street together — all five of them. There he was, sitting in his car in front of a family of five bears. As he was observing them, he was trying to process what was happening.

It seemed like the mama bear was patiently leading her four little cubs across the road. But as he was waiting for them to finish crossing, he noticed that something else was going on.

Was the Little Cub Just Tired?

The mother was struggling to keep all of her cubs together, but one of them was struggling even more to keep up. This little cub caught the police officer’s attention, and the longer he watched, the more nervous he got.

It was hard to see that one of them was having issues, Officer Owens wanted the family to stick together. Was this little cub just being rebellious? Was he tired? Why wasn’t he keeping up with the rest of his family?

Keeping the Cubs Together

The cubs’ mother was trying to help get all of them to follow her across the road, but a cub is like a baby. Even us humans find it challenging to keep kids in line, and it was clearly just as tricky for this family of bears.

Officer Owens was watching the family of bears cross the street, but he was slowly realizing that something more was happening.

He was actually starting to get worried at what he was witnessing.

Giving Up

As the police officer watched the little cub struggling to cross the street, he realized something. The poor little cub looked ill, and physically incapable of much movement. The mother looked confused too, and unsure what to do.

Eventually, the little cub dropped to the ground and didn’t want to get up. It was heartbreaking to watch; he had given up. As his mother witnessed her little cub fall to the ground in despair, she felt helpless herself. It was clear she wanted to help, but she had three little cubbies that also needed her protection. What was she to do?

What About the Struggling Straggler?

Plopped in the middle of the road, drenched in distress and disappointment, was the little baby bear. With his mother on the other side of the road, she didn’t know what to do. She seemed helpless and nervous for her other babies.

The mother had to make a choice, and this choice really upset the officer. Instead of going back to help the struggling straggler, she continued with the other bears, and left him behind.

The officer couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He knew that something had to be done, and couldn’t waste another second sitting there doing nothing.

It Was Time to Take Action!

It’s very dangerous to approach a wild animal, but the police officer couldn’t just let this poor cub suffer. It was time to take action and help the little bear out!

If a mother bear made the tough decision of leaving her baby behind, then his condition must have been serious. And with the mother bear still nearby, he was aware he needed to be extra cautious for the safety of everyone in this situation. As he gently grabbed the bear from the street, he knew that the clock was ticking and that medical attention was needed.

Saving This Hopeless Little Bear

As we mentioned before, the responsibility of a police officer is to enforce the law. But their job is also to protect, and this police officer was more than ready to save this hopeless little bear.

The bear was clearly suffering from some form of illness, and needed medical help immediately.

According to the police department’s report, “It was too weak to keep up with its mom and siblings”.

The officer reached out to a professional rehabilitation center to make sure the little bear would be able to heal and make a full recovery. But soon they would find out that this little cub was not the only one suffering.

Calling for Back-Up

At the scene, the police officer had called in for back-up. He needed to make sure the bear was taken to the clinic safely and properly – this was a dire situation and the officer was trying to be as resourceful as possible.

Once his colleagues from the force had arrived, they made the decision to inspect further. It was heartbreaking to know that one little cub was left behind, but the force needed to make sure that the region was under control and nothing else was going on.

While driving around the area, they were shocked to discover what they had just found.

Another Shattering Discovery

After doing a full sweep of the area, some other officers encountered something just as heartbreaking as Officer Owens’s find.

It looked like the mama bear actually had five cubs in total, and the officers found the fifth one in the middle of nowhere. This was just as shattering because that meant that she had abandoned him prior to the incident that Officer Owens had witnessed. They knew they needed to bring this little guy for medical help as well, and ASAP!

A neighbor here in town had a couple of dogs. One night he could not get them in the house. It turned out there was a bear out there. He said the police and fire department ran him out the north end of town. Bears do not know what lights and sirens are, so they run.
