I moved to Indianapolis from about 50 miles north where I grew up, the difference is startling. Indy never has snow lasting all winter, it melts after usually two or three weeks. In Kokomo, where I grew up, it would snow right after Thanksgiving and the snow would be there until March or April.
Indianapolis is at the extreme N/E point of the sub-tropical warm current zone coming up from the Carribean.
I've lived here for 30 years, I only remember one time we got dumped on by lake effect (Lake Michigan) snowstorm. Kokomo used to get hammered every winter (14"-20").
